Book excerpt: Updated November 2022 with the latest tourism policy by the Department of Tourism, Bhutan. Until recently, Bhutan has been relatively unknown. In many minds, it is a mystical secluded place. Bhutan is gaining popularity as a travel destination, owing to the credits of international media features and Bhutan’s skilful management of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past fifty years, Bhutan has gradually emerged from centuries-long self-isolation to meet modernisation demands. It has been careful with its choices and decisions on the road of development and progression. While Bhutan has opened its doors to the world, a ‘High value, Low volume’ tourism policy still guides the country to ensure that its unique culture, identity and natural environment will continue to be protected from external influence. Bhutan Travelog aims to provide readers with insights into the country’s history, values, customs, as well as travel tips and recommendations. This book also includes 9 exclusive first-hand stories from diverse travellers who have been to Bhutan to provide a glimpse into this idyllic country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felice Gentry, just recovered from a hysterectomy, is told by her celebratory husband that hes booked a trip that will take them to Poland for a visit with friends in the Canadian Embassy there. After that they will tour Europe. He will close his dental practice down for a couple of months and they will leave their university age daughter to house sit. Dutiful wife, Felice says yes, although reluctantly. She is persuaded to give in only because old friends, Ben and Beth Collison, will host their stay behind the Iron Curtain. She and husband Ray pick up their visas in Montreal and, on the day before they board the Polish liner that will take them to London and then Gdynia, they go to have a look at the ship in its berth. There, Felice sees a strange sight: a woman squatting suddenly to urinate beside a van in the parking garage. The womans husband sits on the nearby curb, hardly bothering to notice. On the ship, the woman appears again. She has dyed black hair, a ruined face, does not speak to other passengers, and during the whole voyage (16 days, including a stop in London) wears the same shiny black dress patterned with large yellow flowers. Among the people at Felice and Rays table in the ships dining room is a professor of Slav Studies from Ottawa, who knows a good deal about Poland. Felice does not know that she will meet her, as well as the urinating woman, after the voyage to Gdynia is done. When the ship leaves London, a third woman of significance to Felices adventure appears. Felice thinks she is Brittany who, along with her twin sister Pam, was sent from England at the beginning of WWll, forty years ago now, to live with cousins of their mother, an older couple who lived next door to Felice (when her name was Phyllis) in Medicine Hat, Alberta. A year older than Felice, they were different from Prairie folk. They had lovely accents and lived in a fantasy world of What If that also included Felice. But the woman does not answer to Brittany and merely smiles graciously at Felice, who feels dismissed but still curious. Ben Collison meets the ship and drives them in his VW Rabbit to his embassy home in Warsaw. This is a new posting for him, and for the moment he lives alone, looked after by a daily housekeeper, Pani Irena. His wife, Beth, and their children are not due to arrive until Ben is better settled. His plans for his guests include going first to Warsaw Old Town and later on down to Krakov in the south of the country. One afternoon on the ship, Felice saw a documentary about the rebirth of Warsaw from out of the rubble left behind by the Germans, re-built, brick by brick, by people who did not have enough to eat, but whose love for country and city and Old Town was bigger than the need for food. She watched old women and men dressed in tatters move bricks and stones to reconstruct precious buildings again. Not Communist propaganda, this was a look into the Polish heart and mind. She wept. Now in Old town she weeps again, but there is the beginning of something else, an unaccustomed anger that would begin her personal transformation. Near the centre of Old Town there is a free cinema where a film of the rise and fall and rise again of Old Town is shown in a number of languages. When she passes by she is told that the next showing is in German. Stunned, she asks how Germans could show themselves here after what they did to Warsaw. The ticket-taker shrugs. During a trip to Krakov, Ben turns off the highway and takes them to Auschwitz, a place he is curious to see. Here, Felices mind and senses almost immediately begin to be assaulted by strange sights. Ben opts to see the Holocaust film that plays continuously at the cinema just inside the reception centre. Ray wont let Felice go into the camp alone. He follows her, his camera constantly at his eye to prevent him from seeing too much. At the gate to the main camp, Felice buys a book written by a German who was a guard here during the

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to trace the development of the literary travel memoir in Russia during the last decades of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth. Having indicated the prove nances of this genre in Western Europe, I shall evaluate its role in Russian literary history. Because this study is not intended to be an historical survey of all significant travel works that appeared in Russia, I shall pass over such early pioneer travelers as the Abbot Daniil who visited Palestine at the beginning of the twelfth century and recorded for his countrymen detailed descriptions of the Holy places, or the merchant, Afanasij Nikitin, whose travel notes concerning a trip to India are preserved in a fifteenth century chronicle. The travel genre, which had become enormously popular in eight eenth century Western Europe,l was cleverly exploited by Fonvizin, Radishchev, and Karamzin to expound to the Russian reading public certain important notions on literary theory, on society (foreign and domestic), on themselves, and on nature. The travel genre - then as now a flexible instrument for transmitting, by means of diary-style narrative, information about distant, often exotic people and place- had been adapted by Sterne and others to themes having little relation to a conventional journey. The Russians were quick to grasp the genre's literary as well as its polemical possibilities, and influenced by Western models, they too used it to convey theoretical assertions on a variety of SUbjects.

Book excerpt: FINALIST FOR THE 2024 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR TRANSLATED LITERATURE A bittersweet story of love between two women, nested in an artful exploration of language, history, and power May 1938. The young novelist Aoyama Chizuko has sailed from her home in Nagasaki, Japan, and arrived in Taiwan. She’s been invited there by the Japanese government ruling the island, though she has no interest in their official banquets or imperialist agenda. Instead, Chizuko longs to experience real island life and to taste as much of its authentic cuisine as her famously monstrous appetite can bear. Soon a Taiwanese woman—who is younger even than she is, and who shares the characters of her name—is hired as her interpreter and makes her dreams come true. The charming, erudite, meticulous Chizuru arranges Chizuko’s travels all over the Land of the South and also proves to be an exceptional cook. Over scenic train rides and braised pork rice, lively banter and winter melon tea, Chizuko grows infatuated with her companion and intent on drawing her closer. But something causes Chizuru to keep her distance. It’s only after a heartbreaking separation that Chizuko begins to grasp what the “something” is. Disguised as a translation of a rediscovered text by a Japanese writer, this novel was a sensation on its first publication in Mandarin Chinese in 2020 and won Taiwan’s highest literary honor, the Golden Tripod Award. Taiwan Travelogue unburies lost colonial histories and deftly reveals how power dynamics inflect our most intimate relationships.

Download or read book A Policy Travelogue written by Catherine Kingfisher and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ethnography of the development and travel of the New Zealand model of neoliberal welfare reform, this study explores the social life of policy, which is one of process, motion, and change. Different actors, including not only policy élites but also providers and recipients, engage with it in light of their own resources and knowledge. Drawing on two analytic frameworks of the contemporary anthropology of policy—translation and assemblage—Kingfisher situates policy as an artifact and architect of cultural meaning, as well as a site of power struggles. All points of engagement with policy are approached as sites of policy production that serve to transform it as well as reproduce it. As such, A Policy Travelogue provides an antidote to theorizations of policy as a-cultural, rational, and straightforwardly technical.
Download or read book The Travelogue of a Visionary written by Tricia Irene and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a visionary? How do I shape my philosophy in vision? What does the value of vision look like? This book wears these answers on its sleeve. During a sabbatical from conceptual systems in pursuit of truth and wisdom, the secluded W.J. challenged himself to find the value of vision. This book is merely documented organically as W.J.s open letter to the global community of visionaries. After a year reconstructing and establishing the values of vision, he persuasively argues the notion that transcendent truth is the credibility gap between the vanguard visionary and the emerging, digital, twenty-first-century visionary. This book has his practical and profound radically new approach to universal vision concerning epistemology, business ethics, and global issues.

The Psalms were the hymnbook of the Hebrews, Jesus, and the early church. Today, we tend to pluck a verse here and there for a word of encouragement, but we have lost the Psalms as a guidebook for spiritual formation. You can rediscover the Psalms as a traveler. Explore the terrain where your interior life and the Word of God intersect. Begin speaking to God with raw honesty. Listen as God replies with personal, life-giving words. Above all, discover at the feet of the poet-king how to “taste and see that the LORD is good.”
Download or read book Hawai i Stolen Paradise A Travelogue written by Stephanie C. Fox and published by QueenBeeBooks. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would you like to learn the history of Hawaiʻi, and get to know its culture and traditions through the convenience of a book? This one has it all: photographs, stories, and history, all told by a traveler who wanted to study that firsthand. What she compiled is a fun way to learn about Hawaiʻi, the result of her own, self-taught course about the Islands. It includes a bibliography and a glossary of Hawaiian words and phrases at the end, complete with a pronunciation key. As a bonus, the names, addresses, phone numbers, and websites of the places she visited are listed in the bibliographies of both San Francisco - a stop along the way to Hawaiʻi - and for Hawaiʻi itself. Here is a brief summary of the fun described in this travelogue: In October of 2012, the author and her parents took a trip to Hawai‘i, visiting O‘ahu and the Big Island. They stayed at a beautiful resort on O‘ahu called Ko Olina, which means “to be filled with happiness” in the Hawaiian language. They toured historic sites - ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu and Hulihe‘e Palace in Kailua-Kona. They visited the dead sailors aboard the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. They took a ride in an electric submarine in the waters off Waikiki. They drove down Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island, and then down Chain of Craters Road to see where Kilauea had erupted over the pavement and into the Pacific Ocean. They tasted Kona coffee and saw how it was grown, harvested, dried, and roasted. They attended a hokey lu‘au on O‘ahu and a wonderfully educational one on the Big Island. They walked through a tropical garden on each of the Islands that they visited, looking at orchids, butterflies, palm trees, macadamia trees, and cannonball trees. In short, the author led her parents on a fascinating tour of Hawaiian history, language, music, cuisine, culture, botany, zoology, and volcanology. It was the trip of a lifetime. After all, one can never taste, smell, hear, see, or touch enough of the paradise that is Hawai‘i.

Book excerpt: The book is a gripping description of a mountain hike of nearly two weeks made from France’s Chamonix to Zermatt in Switzerland. The trip encompasses the approximately 170-kilometer Haute Route, which advances in the mountain range. Every day on the hike a mountain is crossed, or even three. The text relays situations that arose along the way and conversations with hikers from around the world, all described in a warm and humorous tone. The writer contemplates the choices a hiker must make and many other matters worth pondering. The book is based on writings made in the evenings after a day of hiking and they vividly reflect the honest thoughts of the writer at the time. Practicalities are featured prominently in the text, as the hike involved day-to-day decisions of accommodation and route choices. The text is not solely limited to the route in question but includes elements and themes from previous mountain hike experiences. In addition to providing information on the progress made during the route, the text gives insight into practical matters, including equipment, accommodations and securing lodgings. The book makes for a splendid read for those planning a mountain hike and even for those hoping to make the journey from very place they are sitting in. The book includes over a hundred photos, maps and relevant information regarding the days of hiking.
Download or read book Travelogue Across Hemispheres written by Bhupender Gupta and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical or mental, good or bad, pleasurable or otherwise, the writer’s endeavour should be to pen in such a way that the reader vicariously experiences the writer’s own experience. The success of a writer presumably depends directly upon the degree at which they are able to achieve this crucial objective. Neither has Bhupender an artistic background nor is he a photography aficionado. But destiny arguably is unpredictable. It sometimes has unplanned ventures to peruse. So probably during one of his regular evening drives from office to home the beauty of the sunset inadvertently captured his imagination, engendering feelings that he says were more romantic than his real romantic encounters. Fascinated with the waves of the sea caressing over the the sand, part of it sinking in and the rest going back to the sea only to return with same vigour, plausibly prodded him to discover a new meaning for courage. He looked up at the sky to realize the incredible vastness of nature that he was part of it now. Saddled himself with a camera, tripod, paper and a pen, and off he goes globe-trotting. To click the little fairylands in the world and collect the scattered jewels of incredible places only to share them with you. A captivating read indeed for both, avid and armchair travellers.
