Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pursuit of the Slam: My Year Travelling to Tennis’s Top Four Tournaments tells the story of the author’s year out between jobs during which he attended all four of tennis’s Grand Slam tournaments. Unhappy in his corporate job, tennis fan Mark Cripps decided to pack it all in and start again. But a chance sighting of an old friend in an in-flight magazine led to an idea: Why not take some time out to travel, organising the trip around tennis’s Grand Slam tournaments? He made a plan to attend the 1992 French Open, Wimbledon, the US Open and then, returning to Australia in early 1993, where he had been based with American Express, the Australian Open. On the way, he would visit places of interest, catch up with old friends and visit other tournaments in the build up to each Slam, including the Italian Open in Rome. The book describes how the author organised the visits to each Slam, once there, securing tickets and watching the tennis daily. A club tennis player, the book also tells how the author entered a tournament on the new British Tour and the experience of facing opponents of a much higher standard. Following the US Open, a week spent at a tennis fantasy camp helped confirm the next steps he needed to take when his trip was over. In Pursuit of the Slam: My Year Travelling to Tennis’s Top Four Tournaments is told in an anecdotal style including the story of the author’s childhood introduction to sport, where his mother’s love of Wimbledon was so infectious. A nostalgic look back at the professional tennis tours through the prism of a round-the-world trip, the book will appeal to those interested in tennis, especially the professional game back in the nineties and the history of British tennis in general; those keen on travel; anyone needing a change of job or career; or those who just want to make the most of their interests.

Book Guide to Graph Colouring

Download or read book Guide to Graph Colouring written by R. M. R. Lewis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook treats graph colouring as an algorithmic problem, with a strong emphasis on practical applications. The author describes and analyses some of the best-known algorithms for colouring graphs, focusing on whether these heuristics can provide optimal solutions in some cases; how they perform on graphs where the chromatic number is unknown; and whether they can produce better solutions than other algorithms for certain types of graphs, and why. The introductory chapters explain graph colouring, complexity theory, bounds and constructive algorithms. The author then shows how advanced, graph colouring techniques can be applied to classic real-world operational research problems such as designing seating plans, sports scheduling, and university timetabling. He includes many examples, suggestions for further reading, and historical notes, and the book is supplemented by an online suite of downloadable code. The book is of value to researchers, graduate students, and practitioners in the areas of operations research, theoretical computer science, optimization, and computational intelligence. The reader should have elementary knowledge of sets, matrices, and enumerative combinatorics.

As the city springs to life, ferries and tankers weave their way across the Bosphorus Strait from Asia to Europe and traffic chokes the streets. Hundreds of fishermen line the Galata Bridge in search of their daily catch to sell in cafés nestled below, while seagulls swoop and squall. At the end of the bridge, locals crush into the dark passageways at Eminönü's spice market and along the warrens of the Grand Bazaar for another day of haggling.

Book excerpt: Analyzing how tennis turned pro The arrival of the Open era in 1968 was a watershed in the history of tennis--the year that marked its advent as a professionalized sport. Merging wide-angle history with individual stories of players and off-the-court figures, Greg Ruth charts tennis’s evolution into the game we watch today. His vivid account moves from the cloistered world of nineteenth-century lawn tennis through the longtime amateur-professional divide and the battles over commercialization that raged from the 1920s until 1968. From there, Ruth details the post-1968 expansion of the game as it was transformed by bankable superstars, a popular women’s tour, rival governing bodies, and sponsorship money. What emerges is a fascinating history of the economics and politics that made tennis a decisive, if unlikely, force in the creation of modern-day sports entertainment. Comprehensive and engaging, Tennis tells the interlocking stories of the figures and factors that birthed the professional game.

Book Aussie Journeyman

Download or read book Aussie Journeyman written by Alvin Gardiner and published by Greenslade Creations. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the rugged Australian bush to the posh highlife of Newport Beach, California, Aussie Journeyman tells the story of a young Australian boy with dreams of becoming a professional tennis star. It was the early 1970s, fresh out of high school when Alvin Gardiner set off to take on the international tennis tour. From this humble beginning it was hard to foresee what crazy and at times life-risking twists and turns his life would take. With Open tennis no longer an amateur sport, the professional tour was only one year old. Alvin played his way through some 65 countries around the globe on six continents, making it on the big stages at Wimbledon, the Australian and US Opens. Even though it was an adventurous journey, it wasn't always smooth traveling. There were many weeks on the road, especially in Europe, when pockets were empty with no prospects or plans of the next meal ticket. Alvin played against some of the biggest stars of that era including Borg, Conners, Nastase and Vilas. He also battled the precocious John McEnroe, in John's very first Grand Slam singles match at the 1977 French Open. Dubbed by Mac himself as the "Aussie Journeyman." After his twelve years of battling it out on the circuit and living the gypsy life, he settled in one of the most exclusive cities in America. Alvin then went on to coaching and continued his career on the senior tour becoming World Champion and #1 in the over 35 singles division.
