Book Teaching Multiplication with Lesson Study

Download or read book Teaching Multiplication with Lesson Study written by Masami Isoda and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is intended to assist teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum designers, editors and authors of textbooks in developing strategies to teach the multiplication of natural numbers based on the experience of the Lesson Study in Japan. This approach to mathematics education dates back to the 1870s and reconciles the emphasis on problem solving with the treatment of the curricular contents. It has gained international recognition since the 1990s and thanks to it mathematics education in Japan has been recognized as one of the most efficient and innovative in the world. This growing international awareness has led to an effort to apply the principles of Lesson Study to other parts of the world and this book shows how experienced authors from Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Spain and Portugal have worked to adapt some of these methods and techniques to the Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries of Ibero-America. Drawing on the impact of Lesson Study on government curriculum decisions and teacher behavior in Japanese classrooms; offering examples of lessons, lesson plans and suggestions for teaching; and presenting examples of the good reception of the principles of Lesson Study in Ibero-America, Teaching Multiplication with Lesson Study – Japanese and Ibero-American Theories for Mathematics Education shows how an efficient and cutting-edge experience in mathematics education can travel the world and help teachers in many different countries.

Book The Development of Multiplicative Reasoning in the Learning of Mathematics

Download or read book The Development of Multiplicative Reasoning in the Learning of Mathematics written by Guershon Harel and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the most important concepts children develop progressively throughout their mathematics education years are additivity and multiplicativity. Additivity is associated with situations that involve adding, joining, affixing, subtracting, separating and removing. Multiplicativity is associated with situations that involve duplicating, shrinking, stressing, sharing equally, multiplying, dividing, and exponentiating. This book presents multiplicativity in terms of a multiplicative conceptual field (MCF), not as individual concepts. It is presented in terms of interrelations and dependencies within, between, and among multiplicative concepts. The authors share the view that research on the mathematical, cognitive, and instructional aspects of multiplicative concepts must be situated in an MCF framework.

Book How Humans Learn to Think Mathematically

Download or read book How Humans Learn to Think Mathematically written by David Tall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Humans Learn to Think Mathematically describes the development of mathematical thinking from the young child to the sophisticated adult. Professor David Tall reveals the reasons why mathematical concepts that make sense in one context may become problematic in another. For example, a child's experience of whole number arithmetic successively affects subsequent understanding of fractions, negative numbers, algebra, and the introduction of definitions and proof. Tall's explanations for these developments are accessible to a general audience while encouraging specialists to relate their areas of expertise to the full range of mathematical thinking. The book offers a comprehensive framework for understanding mathematical growth, from practical beginnings through theoretical developments, to the continuing evolution of mathematical thinking at the highest level.

Book Japanese Lesson Study In Mathematics Its Impact Diversity And Potential For Educational Improvement

Download or read book Japanese Lesson Study In Mathematics Its Impact Diversity And Potential For Educational Improvement written by Masami Isoda and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-02-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Before It's Too Late: A Report to the Nation from the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century (2000) in the US, the authors quote from James Stigler's conclusions from various videotape research studies of mathematics teaching: “The key to long-term improvement [in teaching] is to figure out how to generate, accumulate, and share professional knowledge”. Japanese Lesson Study has proved to be one successful means. This book supports the growing movement of lesson study to improve the quality of mathematics education from the original viewpoints of Japanese educators who have been engaging in lesson study in mathematics for professional development and curriculum implementation. This book also illustrates several projects related to lesson study in other countries.

Book Mathematical Thinking

Download or read book Mathematical Thinking written by Masami Isoda and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing mathematical thinking is one of major aims of mathematics education. In mathematics education research, there are a number of researches which describe what it is and how we can observe in experimental research. However, teachers have difficulties developing it in the classrooms. This book is the result of lesson studies over the past 50 years. It describes three perspectives of mathematical thinking: Mathematical Attitude (Minds set), Mathematical Methods in General and Mathematical Ideas with Content and explains how to develop them in the classroom with illuminating examples.

Book From Where We Stand

Download or read book From Where We Stand written by Deborah Tall and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does a particular landscape move us? What is it that attaches us to a particular place? Tall’s From Where We Stand is an eloquent exploration of the connections we have with places—and the loss to us if there are no such connections. A typically rootless child of several American suburbs, Tall set out to make a true home for herself in the landscape that circumstance had brought her—the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. In a mosaic of personal anecdotes, historical sketches, and lyrical meditations, she interweaves her own story with the story of this place and its people—from the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois, to European settlers, to the many utopians who sensed and were inspired by a spiritual resonance here. This edition includes an introduction by William Kittredge and a foreword by Stephen Kuusisto, both highlighting the book’s significance and Tall’s exquisite skill in tracing the relationship between homelands and storytelling.
