Download or read book New World of Gain written by Brian P. Owensby and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-21 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the centuries before Europeans crossed the Atlantic, social and material relations among the indigenous Guaraní people of present-day Paraguay were based on reciprocal gift-giving. But the Spanish and Portuguese newcomers who arrived in the sixteenth century seemed interested in the Guaraní only to advance their own interests, either through material exchange or by getting the Guaraní to serve them. This book tells the story of how Europeans felt empowered to pursue individual gain in the New World, and how the Guaraní people confronted this challenge to their very way of being. Although neither Guaraní nor Europeans were positioned to grasp the larger meaning of the moment, their meeting was part of a global sea change in human relations and the nature of economic exchange. Brian P. Owensby uses the centuries-long encounter between Europeans and the indigenous people of South America to reframe the notion of economic gain as a historical development rather than a matter of human nature. Owensby argues that gain—the pursuit of individual, material self-interest—must be understood as a global development that transformed the lives of Europeans and non-Europeans, wherever these two encountered each other in the great European expansion spanning the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries.

Download or read book Human Rights in Education Science and Culture Legal Developments and Challenges written by Yvonne Donders and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights are at the heart of UNESCO's work in the fields of education, science and culture. Conceived from an international human rights legal framework, Human Rights in Education, Science and Culture: Legal Developments and Challenges combines insights into the content, scope of application and corresponding state obligations of these rights with analyses of issues relating to their implementation. The volume begins by presenting the principles of the indivisibility, interrelatedness and interdependence of all human rights. It then turns to questions related to economic, social and cultural rights, including their justiciability, their application between private parties and the development of indicators for measuring their implementation. Finally, it addresses the right to education, the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications, and the right to take part in cultural life - the content and scope of application of the latter two rights being especially in need of further elucidation. Dedicated to the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this volume will be an invaluable resource for all those working in the area of human rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not a handbook of criminology and forensic medicine but rather a tool that reviews socio-historical and scientific data and notes of methodology based on the different sciences aimed at the study of crime in all its many facets (sociology, jurisprudence, criminalistics, psychology, forensic neuroscience, and forensic medicine). The chapters deal with single aspects of the subject, such as juvenile delinquency, fraud, and the relationship between society, individual personality, and sexual criminal behavior. They then go into more detail, analyzing individual aspects of legal medicine in light of the evolution of the discipline between the 20th and 21st centuries, including infant and adult post-mortem examination and genetic DNA identification.
