Neben den gehaltenen Vorträgen sind zudem zwei Referate abgedruckt, die nicht vorgetragen werden konnten. Dem Tagungsverlauf entsprechend sind die Beiträge möglichst nach der historischen Folge der behandelten Gegenstände angeordnet. Zwar konnten zwangsläufig nicht alle Seiten der sehr komplexen Entwicklung von 1794 bis 1814 erörtert werden, Teilausführungen in den Beiträgen und Literaturangaben verweisen den Leser jedoch weiter. Insgesamt dokumentiert der Band damit die Relevanz der Forschung zu Fichte weltweit und vor allem in Asien sowie das Niveau, auf dem das transzendentale System von Forschern und Philosophen in den verschiedensten Ländern der Welt erörtert wird. The transcendental turn denotes one of its most important forms, defined by the notion that Kant's deepest insight should not be identified with any specific epistemological or metaphysical doctrine, but rather concerns the fundamental standpoint and terms of reference of philosophical enquiry. To take the transcendental turn is not to endorse any of Kant's specific teachings, but to accept that the Copernican revolution announced in the Preface of the Critique of Pure Reason sets philosophy on a new footing and constitutes the proper starting point of philosophical reflection. The aim of this volume is to map the historical trajectory of transcendental philosophy and the major forms that it has taken. The contributions, from leading contemporary scholars, focus on the question of what the transcendental turn consists in—its motivation, justification, and implications; and the limitations and problems which it arguably confronts—with reference to the relevant major figures in modern philosophy, including Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Wittgenstein. Central themes and topics discussed include the distinction of realism from idealism, the relation of transcendental to absolute idealism, the question of how transcendental conclusions stand in relation to (and whether they can be made compatible with) naturalism, the application of transcendental thought to foundational issues in ethics, and the problematic relation of phenomenology to transcendental enquiry.

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of previously unpublished papers dealing with the neglected “phenomenological” dimension of the philosophy of Johann Gottlieb Fichte, which it compares and contrasts to the phenomenology of his contemporary Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and to those of Edmund Husserl and his 20th century followers. Issues discussed include a comparision of the early phenomenological method in Fichte and Hegel with the classical phenomenological method in Husserl, Heidegger and Sartre, as well as special topics, namely the problem of self-consciousness and intersubjectivity, very important in Fichte's trancendental philosophy of the Wissenschaftslehre but discussed as well in 20th century phenomenology. Fichte can be said to have invented the theory of intersubjectivity that was first developed by Hegel and then by Husserl, Sartre or Ricœur. Fichte can also be said to have in fact promoted a theory of intentionality based on tendencies, drives, purposes and will, that got a modern shape and language by Husserl and his followers. And even the deduction of the human body in Fichte's practical parts of the Wissenschaftslehre prepares the path for modern twentieth century theories of body, feeling and mind.

In der Bestimmung der Urteilskraft als Vermögen der "Darstellung" und "Reflexion", was mit der innerteleologischen Auffassung der Kantischen Vernunft übereinstimmt, welche die Vernunftkritik voraussetzt, tritt der Zusammenhang mit der ästhetischen Urteilskraft deutlich hervor. Als ausführende Instanz der Vernunftprinzipien bringt die Urteilskraft in ihrem reflektierenden Wirklichkeitsbezug das Zusammenwirken der Erkenntnisvermögen ans Licht. Die Einheit der drei Kritiken sowie die Einheit der beiden Hauptteile der Kritik der Urteilskraft selbst lassen sich nicht nur dadurch begreiflich machen, sondern der Übergang vom Sinnlichen zum Übersinnlichen gewinnt auch eine pragmatische Bedeutung im Kantischen Sinne.
