Book Transverse Oscillations of a Circular Cylinder in Uniform Flow

Download or read book Transverse Oscillations of a Circular Cylinder in Uniform Flow written by David William Meyers and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mean in-line force and the time dependent transverse force acting on a circular cylinder undergoing periodic transverse oscillations in an otherwise steady flow was measured for various amplitudes and frequencies of oscillation at several steady flow velocities. The experiments were carried out in a recirculating water tunnel operating as a closed channel at the test section. The mean in-line force has been expressed in terms of a mean drag coefficient C sub di and plotted as a function of A/D and D/VT. The time dependent transverse force has been expressed in terms of the Fourier-averaged drag and inertia coefficients C sub di and C sub ml and plotted as functions of the relative amplitude A/D and the period parameter VT/D. The results have shown that the mean in-line force is significantly larger than that corresponding to steady flow about a non-oscillating cylinder and that energy may be transferred to the oscillating cylinder from the fluid at or near the vortex-shedding frequencies for the A/D values tested. Book Transverse Oscillations of a Circular Cylinder in Uniform Flow Part 1 Revised

Download or read book Transverse Oscillations of a Circular Cylinder in Uniform Flow Part 1 Revised written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an experimental and analytical investigation of the forced oscillations of a circular cylinder in uniform flow. The transverse force has been decomposed into two components and the appropriate force coefficients have been determined experimentally through the use of a Fourier-averaging technique. The results were then incorporated into the equation of motion to predict the dynamic response of elastically-mounted cylinders. The numerical predictions were found to be in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. The results of the discrete-vortex model of the separated flow field about an oscillating cylinder will be described in a separate report.

Book An Analytical Mechanics Framework for Flow Oscillator Modeling of Vortex Induced Bluff Body Oscillations

Download or read book An Analytical Mechanics Framework for Flow Oscillator Modeling of Vortex Induced Bluff Body Oscillations written by Sohrob Mottaghi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This self-contained book provides an introduction to the flow-oscillator modeling of vortex-induced bluff-body oscillations. One of the great challenges in engineering science also happens to be one of engineering design – the modeling, analysis and design of vibrating structures driven by fluid motion. The literature on fluid–structure interaction is vast, and it can be said to comprise a large fraction of all papers published in the mechanical sciences. This book focuses on the vortex-induced oscillations of an immersed body, since, although the importance of the subject has long been known, it is only during the past fifty years that there have been concerted efforts to analytically model the general behavior of the coupling between vortex shedding and structural oscillations. At the same time, experimentalists have been gathering data on such interactions in order to help define the various regimes of behavior. This data is critical to our understanding and to those who develop analytical models, as can be seen in this book. The fundamental bases for the modeling developed in this book are the variational principles of analytical dynamics, in particular Hamilton’s principle and Jourdain’s principle, considered great intellectual achievements on par with Newton’s laws of motion. Variational principles have been applied in numerous disciplines, including dynamics, optics and quantum mechanics. Here, we apply variational principles to the development of a framework for the modeling of flow-oscillator models of vortex-induced oscillations.

Book A Discrete Vortex Analysis of Flow About Stationary and Transversely Oscillating Circular Cylinders

Download or read book A Discrete Vortex Analysis of Flow About Stationary and Transversely Oscillating Circular Cylinders written by Turgut Sarpkaya and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive numerical model has been developed to investigate the characteristics of flow about a circular cylinder undergoing synchronized transverse oscillations. The model is based on the rediscretization of the shear layers, wake-boundary-layer interaction, and the dissipation of vorticity. The forces acting on the cylinder, rate of vorticity flux, Strouhal number, cylinder response, oscillations of the stagnation and separation points, longitudinal and transverse spacing of the vortices, and the base pressure have been calculated and shown to be in conformity with those obtained experimentally. The model has been used to predict the characteristics of hydroelastic oscillations of a cylinder in the range of synchronization. The numerical experiments shed considerable light on the interaction between the fluid motion in the wake and the dynamics of the body. An extensive sensitivity analysis has been carried out to determine the stability of all the parameters and hence the stability of the numerical model itself. (Author).

Book Transverse Oscillations of Smooth and Rough Cylinders in Harmonic Flow

Download or read book Transverse Oscillations of Smooth and Rough Cylinders in Harmonic Flow written by Suleyman Ozkaynak and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic response of elastically-mounted cylinders in a sinusoidally oscillating two-dimensional flow has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The experiments were carried out in a large U-shaped water tunnel, with smooth and sand-roughened circular cylinders. The results have been expressed in terms of lift coefficients, relative amplitudes of oscillation, Keulegan-Carpenter number, Reynolds number, Strouhal number, and a mass parameter. A theoretical analysis has been carried out by assuming the transverse force varies harmonically. Furthermore, the instantaneous values of the displacement have been predicted through the use of the Duhamel's integral. The results have shown that elastically-mounted cylinders undergo synchronous oscillations at a reduced velocity of 5.7 when the vortex shedding frequency coincides with the natural frequency of the cylinder. Away from the region of synchronization the cylinder is subjected to forced response by vortices shedding at a frequency smaller or larger than the natural frequency of the cylinder. (Author).

Finally, some suggestions are made for further research on VIV. The organization of the paper is given at the end of the next section.

Book Forces on a Transverse Circular Cylinder in a Steady Uniform Flow Near a Plane Boundary

Download or read book Forces on a Transverse Circular Cylinder in a Steady Uniform Flow Near a Plane Boundary written by Blaine Hafen and published by . This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted to determine the hydrodynamic forces on smooth and roughened circular cylinders as influenced by a nearby plane boundary. The ambient flow was perpendicular to the cylinder and parallel to the boundary. Measurements were taken in a water channel and a wind tunnel to obtain the influence of the boundary on the Strouhal number, lift and drag forces, and wake configuration. Reynolds numbers in the wind tunnel varied from 2 X 104 to 8 X 104, and the Reynolds number in the water channel was fixed at 5800. The value of CD for a smooth cylinder was found to increase about 20% to 60% as the cylinder neared the boundary, but at the boundary CD was about 15% less than the value in the free stream. Calculated values of CD based on the Strouhal number measured in the water channel compared favorably with CD values determined in the wind tunnel. The lift force was always positive due to wake effects.
