Book excerpt: This study traces the transvaluations or transformations in value and meaning Nietzsche's work underwent during the first century of its reception in France. These transvaluations, Smith argues, resulted as various critics, both within and outside the philosophical establishment, contested Nietzsche's theories. He offers a historical perspective on the continuing importance of Nietzsche's work to contemporary debates within the arenas of philosophy and critical theory.

Book The Will to Power Book I to IV An Attempted Transvaluation of all Values Complete

Download or read book The Will to Power Book I to IV An Attempted Transvaluation of all Values Complete written by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 887 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the volume before us we have the first two books of what was to be Nietzsche's greatest theoretical and philosophical prose work. The reception given to Thus Spake Zarathustra had been so unsatisfactory, and misunderstandings relative to its teaching had become so general, that, within a year of the publication of the first part of that famous philosophical poem, Nietzsche was already beginning to see the necessity of bringing his doctrines before the public in a more definite and unmistakable form. During the years that followed—that is to say, between 1883 and 1886—this plan was matured, and although we have no warrant, save his sister's own word and the internal evidence at our disposal, for classing Beyond Good and Evil (published 1886) among the contributions to Nietzsche's grand and final philosophical scheme, "The Will to Power," it is now impossible to separate it entirely from his chief work as we would naturally separate The Birth of Tragedy, the Thoughts out of Season, the volumes entitled Human, all-too-Human, The Dawn of Day, and Joyful Wisdom. Beyond Good and Evil, then, together with its sequel, The Genealogy of Morals, and the two little volumes, The Twilight of the Idols and the Antichrist (published in 1889 and 1894 respectively), must be regarded as forming part of the general plan of which The Will to Power was to be the opus magnum. Unfortunately, The Will to Power was never completed by its author. The text from which this translation was made is a posthumous publication, and it suffers from all the disadvantages that a book must suffer from which has been arranged and ordered by foster hands. When those who were responsible for its publication undertook the task of preparing it for the press, it was very little more than a vast collection of notes and rough drafts, set down by Nietzsche from time to time, as the material for his chief work; and, as any liberty taken with the original manuscript, save that of putting it in order, would probably have resulted in adding or excluding what the author would on no account have added or excluded himself, it follows that in some few cases the paragraphs are no more than hasty memoranda of passing thoughts, which Nietzsche must have had the intention of elaborating at some future time. In these cases the translation follows the German as closely as possible, and the free use even of a conjunction has in certain cases been avoided, for fear lest the meaning might be in the slightest degree modified. It were well, therefore, if the reader could bear these facts in mind whenever he is struck by a certain clumsiness, either of expression or disposition, in the course of reading this translation.

Book Trans acting Culture Writing and Memory

Download or read book Trans acting Culture Writing and Memory written by Eva C. Karpinski and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trans/acting Culture, Writing, and Memory is a collection of essays written in honour of Barbara Godard, one of the most original and wide-ranging literary critics, theorists, teachers, translators, and public intellectuals Canada has ever produced. The contributors, both established and emerging scholars, extend Godard’s work through engagements with her published texts in the spirit of creative interchange and intergenerational relay of ideas. Their essays resonate with Godard’s innovative scholarship, situated at the intersection of such fields as literary studies, cultural studies, translation studies, feminist theory, arts criticism, social activism, institutional analysis, and public memory. In pursuit of unexpected linkages and connections, the essays venture beyond generic and disciplinary borders, zeroing in on Godard’s transdisciplinary practice which has been extremely influential in the way it framed questions and modelled interventions for the study of Canadian, Québécois, and Acadian literatures and cultures. The authors work with the materials ranging from Canadian government policies and documents to publications concerning white-supremacist organizations in Southern Ontario, online materials from a Toronto-based transgender arts festival, a photographic mural installation commemorating the Montreal Massacre, and the works of such writers and artists as Marie Clements, Nicole Brossard, France Daigle, Nancy Huston, Yvette Nolan, Gail Scott, Denise Desautels, Louise Warren, Rebecca Belmore, Vera Frenkel, Robert Lepage, and Janet Cardiff.

Book Poetic Truth and Transvaluation in Nietzsche s Zarathustra

Download or read book Poetic Truth and Transvaluation in Nietzsche s Zarathustra written by Ernest Joós and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heidegger wanted to take Nietzsche seriously as a thinker. But as a thinker or philosopher Nietzsche can be accused of inconsistency. Even his main objective - the transvaluation all values - may make no sense. This author wants to view Nietzsche as a poet. He opposes the universality of abstract truth to the poetic truth which is the incarnation of the absolute in the concrete and valid only as meaning in a particular context. A large part of the book is devoted to the application of this theory, hence the book is both a hermeneutic study and a practical guide for the interpretation of Nietzsche's controversial topics such as the Death of God, marriage, life and death, or - woman and the Superman (Übermensch). Part Three deals with Hermeneutics and Metaphysics, then with Heidegger, Nietzsche and Metaphysics.
