Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport Processes in Concrete presents a comprehensive survey of the physical and chemical processes and transport mechanisms in concrete, and analyses their significance for the movement of heat, moisture and chemical compounds. A critical analysis of the available mathematical models is given, and from this analysis the most suitable models to describe transport processes in concrete are selected. Book Corrosion of Steel in Concrete

Download or read book Corrosion of Steel in Concrete written by Luca Bertolini and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel-reinforced concrete is used ubiquitously as a building material due to its unique combination of the high compressive strength of concrete and the high tensile strength of steel. Therefore, reinforced concrete is an ideal composite material that is used for a wide range of applications in structural engineering such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, harbor quays, foundations, tanks and pipes. To ensure durability of these structures, however, measures must be taken to prevent, diagnose and, if necessary, repair damage to the material especially due to corrosion of the steel reinforcement. The book examines the different aspects of corrosion of steel in concrete, starting from basic and essential mechanisms of the phenomenon, moving up to practical consequences for designers, contractors and owners both for new and existing reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. It covers general aspects of corrosion and protection of reinforcement, forms of attack in the presence of carbonation and chlorides, problems of hydrogen embrittlement as well as techniques of diagnosis, monitoring and repair. This second edition updates the contents with recent findings on the different topics considered and bibliographic references, with particular attention to recent European standards. This book is a self-contained treatment for civil and construction engineers, material scientists, advanced students and architects concerned with the design and maintenance of reinforced concrete structures. Readers will benefit from the knowledge, tools, and methods needed to understand corrosion in reinforced concrete and how to prevent it or keep it within acceptable limits.

Book Transport Properties of Concrete

Download or read book Transport Properties of Concrete written by Peter A. Claisse and published by Woodhead Pub Limited. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport Properties of Concrete covers how to measure the ability of ions and fluids to move through concrete material, and how to use the results to model performance. These transport properties largely determine the durability of concrete and of steel embedded within it, as well as the effectiveness of structures such as landfill containment barriers. The book begins by explaining in detail what transport properties are and how to write computer models for transport processes. Early chapters present and explain computer models written in basic code. Coverage then proceeds to a wide range of tests for the transport properties of concrete, and methods for calculating the values for these properties from the test results using analytical and numerical models. The final chapters then show how the values obtained can be used to predict the durability of reinforced concrete, to model the effect of gas pressure, and to model waste containment structures. A number of practical examples are given, in which the calculations and computer models have been applied to real experimental data. Transport Properties of Concrete provides a comprehensive examination of the subject, and will be of use to all concerned with the durability and effectiveness of concrete structures. Provides a detailed understanding of the various transport mechanisms that take place during testing in concrete Shows how to obtain fundamental transport properties

Book Transport and Interactions of Chlorides in Cement based Materials

Download or read book Transport and Interactions of Chlorides in Cement based Materials written by Caijun Shi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chloride-induced corrosion is the most important durability issue of reinforced concrete structures, and the prediction and prevention of chloride-induced corrosion has attracted considerable interest all over the world. Given that chloride penetrates through the concrete cover, the issues concerning its transport are crucial. These include testing methods, prediction, and the prevention of ingress. During the transport process, physical and chemical interaction occurs between chloride and cement hydrates, which in turn affects the further transport, so the transport of chloride and these interactions are closely related and underpin our understanding of chloride-induced corrosion in RC structures. This book provides in-depth discussion of chloride transport and its interaction in cement-based materials, and reviews and summarizes the state of the art. The mechanisms and testing methods for chloride transport, chemical interactions of chloride with cement hydrates, chloride binding isotherms, measurement of penetration depths, factors affecting chloride transport, and modeling of chloride transport are discussed in detail. This book serves as a reference for researchers or engineer, and a textbook for graduate students.

Book Survey of Concrete Transport Properties and Their Measurement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Survey of Concrete Transport Properties and Their Measurement Classic Reprint written by Nicos S. Martys and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of Concrete Transport Properties and Their Measurement Concrete is one of the most widely used building materials in the construction of the nation's infrastructure including highways, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, harbors, locks, dams, tunnels and buildings. Over 500 million tons of concrete are produced in the United States each year of which a significant fraction is used for repair and rehabilitation rather than new construction. The service life and utility of concrete strongly depends on its transport properties li.e. Permeability, sorptivity and chloride permeability). For example, concrete is a building material with potential use for long term storage of hazardous substances such as nuclear and toxic wastes. In such applications it is essential that concrete have a very low permeability. On the other hand, it has been suggested that very low permeability high performance-concrete (hpc) may have serious deficiencies as a building material due to possible spalling when subject to high temperatures resulting from fires. Although concrete is commonly thought of as a static or unchanging material, it is, over the typical service life of a structure, a dynamical changing composite material which may undergo considerable degradation. The ingress of potentially deleterious materials such as chlorides, sulfates and water by diffusion and capillary transport can lead to the corrosion of steel reinforcement or a reduction of strength due to cracking by frost or sulfate attack. Clearly, a variety of transport mechanisms play an important role in the degradation of concrete and must be better understood to mitigate such processes.
