Book Environmental Dynamics of Pesticides

Download or read book Environmental Dynamics of Pesticides written by V. Freed and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticides have played a significant role in increasing food production, and in view of growing worldwide food demand we can expect the use of these chemicals to increase. However, some of them have found their way into the biosphere and have been classi fied as persistent toxic chemicals. This has resulted in serious concern about environmental contamination. Since we are going to continue using chemicals, we should learn more about such aspects as their transport in the environment, the relationship of their physical-chemical properties to transport, their persistence in the biosphere, their partitioning in the biota, and toxicological and epidemiological forecasting based on physical-chemical properties. Environmental chemodynamics is the name given to a subject which deals with some of the above topics, utilizing the principles of such disciplines as chemistry, physics, systems analysis, modelling, engineering, and medical and biological sciences. To ensure the safety of the environment, we must know more about the chemodynamical behavior of pesticides and related chemi cals. The purpose of the symposium "Environmental Dynamics of Pes ticides" was to explore the concept of chemodynamics as applied to pesticides and thus may help in developing the emerging field of environmental chemodynamics. The symposium was held during the l37th National American Chemical Society Meeting at Los Angeles, California, during April, 1974. The three sessions in the sym posium were chai'red by Drs. V.H. Freed, D.G. Crosby, and R. Haque.

Book Vadose Zone Hydrology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marc B. Parlange
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1999-08-05
  • ISBN : 0198026994
  • Pages : 473 pages

Download or read book Vadose Zone Hydrology written by Marc B. Parlange and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-08-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vadose zone is the region between ground level and the upper limits of soil fully saturated with water. Hydrology in the zone is complex: nonlinear physical, chemical, and biological interactions all affect the transfer of heat, mass, and momentum between the atmosphere and the water table. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to vadose zone hydrology, bringing together insights from soil science, hydrology, biology, chemistry, physics, and instrumentation design. The chapters present state-of-the-art research, focusing on new frontiers in theory, experiment, and management of soils. The collection addresses the full range of processes, from the pore-scale to field and landscape scales.

Book Advances in Agronomy

Download or read book Advances in Agronomy written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1996-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 58 contains seven reviews covering key contemporary topics on crop and soil sciences. Three of these reviews focus upon soils; in particular, biodegradation of soil pollutants, modelling of solute transport in soils, and the analysis of soil salinity. The other four papers deal especially with crops: herbicide resistance, silicon and rice production, the use of tissue cultures for crop improvement, and crop water relations. With this latest volume, Advances in Agronomy continues to be recognized as a leading reference and as a first-rate source of the latest research in agronomy, crop science, and soil science. - Biodegradation of soil pollutants - Herbicide resistance - Silicon management - Modeling solute transport in soils - Tissue cultures and crop improvement - Soil salinity - Crop/water relations
