Book Transport Network and Data Link Layer Protocol Designs to Improve Geo stationary Earth Orbit Satellite Data Set Transmission Performance

Download or read book Transport Network and Data Link Layer Protocol Designs to Improve Geo stationary Earth Orbit Satellite Data Set Transmission Performance written by Paul Douglas Wiedemeier and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geo-stationary earth orbit (CEO) satellites are wireless transmission media that provide near-earth Internet and Intranet data communication, but are limited to low Megabits per second transmission rates and small messages. They can provide communication infrastructure to rural earth locales, are not affected by terrorist events and natural disasters that render terrestrial channels unusable, and can replace terrestrial communication infrastructure. In this thesis, we present new designs for a transport layer data transmission protocol, a network layer routing strategy, and a data-link layer medium access control strategy. Through simulation, we show that our designs permit earth stations to transmit large data sets at high transmission rates over GEO satellites in less time than the Transmission Control Protocol variant Reno and frequency division multiplexing. Our designs can be used by organizations that wish to transmit large data sets quickly over CEO satellites that exhibit large bandwidth delay products and large bit error rates.

Download or read book Compressed Internet Protocol Data Via Geosynchronous Earth Orbit Satellite Circuits written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To enable Internet Protocol (IP) applications in the submarine environment, Critical Technologies Inc. (CTI) has defined requirements for an integrated system, comprising enhanced Data Link, Network and Transport protocols (OSI Layers 2-4), and an innovative Application Traffic Controller (ATC, operating in OSI Layers 5-7). The system will optimize efficiency and effectiveness of fleet communications, despite submarine SATCOM's high Bit Error Rate, low bandwidth, long latency, extreme channel variability and severely intermittent connectivity. The ATC integrates caching, compression, prioritization and queuing, under control of system-administrator specified rules, to optimize link utilization. The system is also designed to operate under Low Probability of Detection I Intercept and EMCON (with planned and unplanned blackouts, in various constrained 2- and 1-way communications postures), by integrating enhanced protocols that provide reliable transport of IP traffic to submarines without acknowledgement. The system will benefit various assets of the current and future US fleet, as well as other military and commercial organizations. These assets could include fast attack and ballistic missile submarines, surface ships, airborne platforms, unmanned vehicles, littoral elements, and various land, sea, air, and space networks.

Book Compressed Internet Protocol IP Data Via Geosynchronous Earth Orbit GEO Satellite Circuits

Download or read book Compressed Internet Protocol IP Data Via Geosynchronous Earth Orbit GEO Satellite Circuits written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To enable Internet Protocol applications in the submarine environment, Critical Technologies Inc. (CTI) has defined requirements for an integrated system of enhanced Data Link, Network and Transport protocols (in OSI Layers 2-4) and an innovative Application Traffic Controller (ATC, in OSI Layers 5-7). It integrates caching, compression, prioritization and queuing to optimize link utilization. The Compression Controller segment will provide users with compression benefits without requiring them to manually invoke compression utilities. It will automatically and transparently, based upon policy rules, for each data object: determine whether the data requires compression, and if so, which algorithms and parameters are most appropriate for that data; and then dispatch the object to the most appropriate available external compression utility. Navy system administrators will define the rules, based on Application Layer data object type, size, format, content, intended use, importance, source/destination, etc., per approved doctrine. In addition to automating compression, it will provide better control over the tradeoffs among delivered data quality, timeliness and wireless resource consumption. In the Phase I Option, CTI developed a Compression Controller pre-prototype and successfully tested it over UHF DAMA MILSATCOM.

Book Enhancement of Transmission Control Protocol Performance Over Low Earth Orbit Satellite

Download or read book Enhancement of Transmission Control Protocol Performance Over Low Earth Orbit Satellite written by Mayada Salih Abdalla Mustafa and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent growth of the Internet has led to the development of Internet services everywhere and over every possible communications medium. Here, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite has been addressed as a medium for supporting services based on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Basically: TCP was proposed as a common transport protocol for the Internet. The TCP mechanisms have been modified overtime and almost standardized for wired networks. However, for wireless communications still further modifications are needed for TCP mechanisms. Particularly, in this study an Enhanced Selective Acknowledgement (ESACK) mechanism has been proposed to improve the performance of TCP over LEO satellite links. The ESACK detects the network congestion and adjusts the transmission window by considering losses in two consecutive windows. By using the network simulator (ns) the overall performance of the TCP ESACK has been compared with that of the TCP SACK over LEO satellite links. The performance metrics include congestion window, effective throughput, end-to-end packet delay and file transmission time. Extensive simulation scenarios have been done using a number of FTP file sizes, two LEO satellite systems at different link error rates, point-to-point and multipoint-to-point connections. The results show that the ESACK provides a higher congestion window than that of the Selective Acknowledgement (SACK), which results in improving the effective throughput as well as reducing the overall file transmission time at the expense of slightly increasing end-to-end packet delay. It can be concluded that the ESACK, with possible slight changes to SACK, improves the performance of TCP over LEO satellite links.

Book Network and Protocol Architectures for Future Satellite Systems

Download or read book Network and Protocol Architectures for Future Satellite Systems written by Tomaso de Cola and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their conception, satellite communications have been regarded as a promising tool for all environments where the terrestrial infrastructure is limited in capacity or to take advantage of the multicasting/broadcasting capabilities inherent in satellite technology. Recent advances have seen satellite technology mature to a more prominent role in the telecommunications domain. In particular, the design of novel satellite payload concepts for Geostationary (GEO) satellite platforms, as well as renewed interest in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations have made the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks almost compulsory to ensure new services meet the requirements for high user-rate and quality of experience that could not be achieved using either of the two technologies independently. From this viewpoint, convergence of satellite and terrestrial technologies also requires considering the most recent trends in networking, with special attention being paid to the potential new architectures that have been recently proposed in the framework of Future Internet. This monograph explores the main components of the scenarios above, putting particular emphasis on the networking aspects. To this end, novel protocols such as Multi Path TCP (MPTCP) and networking trends such as Information Centric Networking (ICN) are explored by demonstrating their applicability in some scenarios that deploy both satellite and terrestrial segments. Particular attention is given to smart gateway diversity schemes which advocate the use of sophisticated multi-path transmission schemes to exploit the multi-homing features offered by present day devices. The second part of the monograph is dedicated to content-based networking, which is becoming increasingly popular driven by the pervasiveness of the Internet in everyday life. In this regard, applications to satellite communications are illustrated and the technical challenges to be further addressed are highlighted.

Book Routing and Quality of Service in Broadband LEO Satellite Networks

Download or read book Routing and Quality of Service in Broadband LEO Satellite Networks written by Hoang Nam Nguyen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routing and Quality-of-Service in Broadband LEO Satellite Networks describes mechanisms for supporting Quality-of-Service (QoS) strategies that consider properties of low earth orbit satellite networks and their effects on link handover. A graph model representing the dynamic topology of a satellite constellation is introduced based on a new parameter, lifetime. Novel routing and resource reservation algorithms as well as connection admission control strategies are proposed to minimize the handover blocking probability while maintaining QoS requirements. The author also discusses the roles of satellites in an all-IP mobile network architecture and the problems of mobility, QoS provisioning, and routing. This work will be of particular interest to researchers and professionals working on mobility networking in next generation networks.

Book Connections Management Strategies in Satellite Cellular Networks

Download or read book Connections Management Strategies in Satellite Cellular Networks written by Malek Benslama and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a novel method based on advantages of mobility model of Low Earth Orbit Mobile Satellite System LEO MSS which allows the evaluation of instant of subsequent handover of a MS even if its location is unknown. This method is then utilized to propose two prioritized handover schemes, Pseudo Last Useful Instant PLUI strategy and Dynamic Channel Reservation DCR-like scheme based respectively on LUI and DCR schemes, previously proposed in literature. The authors also approach a different aspect of handover problem: calls with short durations dropped due to a handover failure. We propose a decision system based on fuzzy logic Rescuing System that allows the rescue of calls with short durations facing a premature at the expense of those lasting for long durations.

Book Link Layer Cooperative Communication in Vehicular Networks

Download or read book Link Layer Cooperative Communication in Vehicular Networks written by Sailesh Bharati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents link-layer cooperative frameworks to improve transmission reliability and network throughput of distributed TDMA MAC protocols in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The main objective of this book is to present link-layer node cooperation schemes to enhance the link-layer performance of vehicular networks, in terms of reliability and system throughput. The authors present approaches proposed for the medium access control (MAC) and node cooperation in VANETs. The authors also cover cooperative ADHOC MAC for point-to-point communication between a pair of source and destination nodes, and cooperative relay broadcasting for broadcast services in this book. The performance of node cooperation frameworks is evaluated via mathematical analysis and computer simulations, in comparison with distributed TDMA MAC protocols without cooperation. The proposed node cooperation frameworks enhance the performance of distributed TDMA MAC and make it more robust to tackle the dynamic networking conditions in VANETs. Furthermore, with cooperation enabled transmission, the performance of distributed TMDA MAC is more suitable to support the wide range of mobile applications and their strict service requirements which is discussed in this book. The proposed node cooperation schemes and distributed cooperation decisions can be extended to wireless systems other than distributed TDMA MAC, such as cellular communication, for vehicular communications introduced in this book. This book is useful for researchers from academia and industry, as well as advanced level students interested in vehicular communication networks. It is also useful for professionals and engineers developing applications that use cooperative wireless communication systems.
