Book Transition Metals in Biochemistry

Download or read book Transition Metals in Biochemistry written by A. S. Brill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal ions in biological systems are of interest in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, medicine, and physics. Scien tists with rather different viewpoints, employing many methods, have contributed to this area. A concise review of the current state of the field will, to some extent, reflect the special knowledge of the person writing it - in this case application of physical methods to the investigation of metal coordination. x ray diffraction is one of the most important of these methods, but a useful treatment of X-ray structure analysis would be com parable in size with and beyond the scope of the monograph. Many results of X-ray diffraction studies are, of course, presented. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has played a major part in the rapid advance in knowledge of the electronic struc tures of transition metal ions in biological systems. More gener ally, measurements involving light, microwaves, and magnetic fields are capable of producing much new information, and the required instrumentation is available at most research institu tions. Therefore light absorption and paramagnetic resonance are treated in depth. The principles described in the latter discus sions are broadly applicable, for example to the promising tech niques of X-ray spectroscopy (utilizing synchrotron radiation) and lanthanide-perturbed, very high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

  • Pages : 526 pages

Download or read book Sulfur written by A. Müller and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulfur: Its Significance for Chemistry, for the Geo-, Bio- and Cosmosphere and Technology focuses on the significance of sulfur for chemistry, geosphere, biosphere, cosmosphere, and technology. Topics covered range from the geochemistry and natural cycle of sulfur to the role of sulfur in "black powder". Organometallic sulfur compounds, thiolates, and the spectroscopic effects of sulfur chemistry are also discussed. Comprised of 21 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to elemental sulfur and related homocyclic compounds and ions, focusing on their preparation, molecular and crystal structures, molecular spectra, and thermodynamic properties. Subsequent chapters deal with the origin and natural cycle of sulfur in the earth's crust; the role of sulfur in the reactions of exploding gunpowder; the use of sulfur in artwork; and developments in the field of organic sulfur chemistry. The catalytic properties of metal complexes of sulfur and sulfur-nitrogen compounds are also examined, along with the synthetic aspects of sulfido-complexes of molybdenum and tungsten. The final section is devoted to the role of sulfur in microbiology, biochemistry, and medicine. This monograph will be useful to students, practitioners, and researchers in the field of inorganic chemistry, as well as those who are interested in sulfur and its compounds.

Book Transition Metals in Catalysis

Download or read book Transition Metals in Catalysis written by Silke Leimkühler and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iron–sulfur (FeS) centers are essential protein cofactors in all forms of life. They are involved in many key biological processes. In particular, Fe-S centers not only serve as enzyme cofactors in catalysis and electron transfer, they are also indispensable for the biosynthesis of complex metal-containing cofactors. Among these cofactors are the molybdenum (Moco) and tungsten (Wco) cofactors. Both Moco/Wco biosynthesis and Fe-S cluster assembly are highly conserved among all kingdoms of life. After formation, Fe-S clusters are transferred to carrier proteins, which insert them into recipient apo-proteins. Moco/Wco cofactors are composed of a tricyclic pterin compound, with the metal coordinated to its unique dithiolene group. Moco/Wco biosynthesis starts with an Fe-S cluster-dependent step involving radical/S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) chemistry. The current lack of knowledge of the connection of the assembly/biosynthesis of complex metal-containing cofactors is due to the sheer complexity of their synthesis with regard to both the (genetic) regulation and (chemical) metal center assembly. Studies on these metal-cofactors/cofactor-containing enzymes are important for understanding fundamental cellular processes. They will also provide a comprehensive view of the complex biosynthesis and the catalytic mechanism of metalloenzymes that underlie metal-related human diseases.

Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.
