Book excerpt: Models of transient combustion of solid propellants were used to try to reproduce transient regression rates measured in experiments at ONERA (French space agency). Variations of the thermal theory approach could not reproduce the measured rates with Reasonable assignment of unmeasurable parameters in the models. Attempts were made with the Kooker-Zinn, Zeldovich, and flame sheet approaches to the gas phase heat feedback. Calculated transients were smaller than the measurements. Predictions of very steep runaway transients were shown to be either a linearly unstable initial condition, or unreproducible by an method.
