Book excerpt: Transect Urbanism: Readings in Human Ecology is the definitive reference on the Rural-to-Urban Transect, a compilation of the most important essays, diagrams, and images on the subject. It provides historical, practical, and theoretical insights into one of the most effective urban planning methodologies developed in the 20th Century. The Transect is a unifying theory, serving as a framework for the various fields of urban design. The editors selected the most important previously published essays and commissioned preeminent academics and professionals to write on the use of the Transect in their areas of expertise, including retail, zoning, thoroughfare design, environmental sustainability, and philosophy. As diagrams and drawings are essential to the understanding and use of the Transect, this book also contains the most complete collection of Transect images ever published. Transect Urbanism will serve as a primary reference source for academics, students, and practitioners interested in creating great places. Andrés Duany is the author of numerous essays and articles and co-author of several books, including Suburban Nation: the Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream, The Smart Growth Manual, Garden Cities: Agricultural Urbanism, and The New Civic Art. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Richard H. Driehaus Prize, the Jefferson Medal, The Vincent Scully Prize and several honorary doctorates. He is a co-founder of DPZ CoDesign, which has been a leader in planning, urban design, and architecture for more than 30 years, as well as a co-founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism. The nonprofit Center for Applied Transect Studies supports interdisciplinary research, publication, tools, and training for the design, coding, building and documentation of resilient Transect-based communities. It has supported the publication of numerous essays, papers, and books, including The Architecture of Community, The Smart Growth Manual, the Sprawl Repair Manual, The Language of Towns and Cities, Visions of Seaside, and The New Pioneers.

Book Spatial Dynamics and Ecology of Large Ungulate Populations in Tropical Forests of India

Download or read book Spatial Dynamics and Ecology of Large Ungulate Populations in Tropical Forests of India written by N. Samba Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large ungulates in tropical forests are among the most threatened taxa of mammals. Excessive hunting, degradation of and encroachments on their natural habitats by humans have contributed to drastic reductions in wild ungulate populations in recent decades. As such, reliable assessments of ungulate-habitat relationships and the spatial dynamics of their populations are urgently needed to provide a scientific basis for conservation efforts. However, such rigorous assessments are methodologically complex and logistically difficult, and consequently many commonly used ungulate population survey methods do not address key problems. As a result of such deficiencies, key parameters related to population distribution, abundance, habitat ecology and management of tropical forest ungulates remain poorly understood. This book addresses this critical knowledge gap by examining how population abundance patterns in five threatened species of large ungulates vary across space in the tropical forests of the Nagarahole-Bandipur reserves in southwestern India. It also explains the development and application of an innovative methodology – spatially explicit line transect sampling – based on an advanced hierarchical modelling under the Bayesian inferential framework, which overcomes common methodological deficiencies in current ungulate surveys. The methods and results presented provide valuable reference material for researchers and professionals involved in studying and managing wild ungulate populations around the globe.

Book Xiangshui to Mandal Transect

Download or read book Xiangshui to Mandal Transect written by Ma Xingyuan and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1991-01-08 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Global Geoscience Transects Series, Volume 2. The Global Geoscience Transects Project (GGT) is an ambitious international effort that draws together geoscientists in a variety of disciplines to produce the best possible portrayal of the composition and structure of the Earth's crust. Since its inception in 1985, GGT has encouraged geoscientists in all countries of the world to compile cross sections of the Earth up to a few thousands of kilometers in length and drawn to the base of the crust using all available geological, geophysical, and geochemical information. Transects are drawn to common scales and formats so that the Earth's crust in different parts of the world can be directly compared. GGT was conceived by the Inter-Union Commission on the Lithosphere (ICL), a "child" of the International Union of Geological Sciences and the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), at the IASPEI conference in Tokyo in August 1985. Project coordinators James W. H. Monger and Hans-Jurgen Götze organized a multidisciplinary, multinational committee that coordinated the global project. Meeting at the IUGG XIX General Assembly in Vancouver in August 1987, the committee developed preliminary guidelines for transect compilations, following suggestions from transect compilers. Proposals for transects were solicited from ICL national committees, government geoscience agencies, universities, and scientists. A total of 140 proposals were received from Africa (41), South America (30), China (18), USSR (12), USA (12), Europe (12), Australia and New Zealand (11), India (3), and Southeast Asia (1).

Download or read book Applied Myrmecology written by Robert K Vander Meer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ants have always fascinated the nature observer. Reports from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia indicate that ants interested humans long ago. Myrmecology as a science had its beginning in the last century with great naturalists like Andre, Darwin, Emery, Escherich, Fabre, Fields, Forel, Janet, Karawaiew, McCook, Mayr, Smith, Wasmann and Wheeler. They studied ants as an interesting biological phenomenon, with little thought of the possible beneficial or detrimental effects ants could have on human activities (see Wheeler 1910 as an example). When Europeans began colonizing the New World, serious ant problems occurred. The first reports of pest ants came from Spanish and Portuguese officials of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Trinidad, The West Indies, Central America and South America. Leaf-cutting ants were blamed for making agricultural development almost impossible in many areas. These ants, Atta and Acromyrmex species, are undoubtedly the first ants identified as pests and may be considered to have initiated interest and research in applied myrmecology (Mariconi 1970).
