Book The Trial of the Chicago 7 The Official Transcript

Download or read book The Trial of the Chicago 7 The Official Transcript written by Mark L. Levine and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Republished fifty years later to coincide with the release of the Academy Award–nominated film of the same title written and directed by Aaron Sorkin with an all-star cast, this is the classic account of perhaps the most infamous, and definitely the most entertaining, trial in recent American history. In the fall of 1969 eight prominent anti-Vietnam War activists were put on trial for conspiring to riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. One of the eight, Black Panther cofounder Bobby Seale, was literally bound and gagged in court by order of the judge, Julius Hoffman, and his case was separated from that of the others. The activists, who included Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Tom Hayden, and their attorneys, William Kunstler and Leonard Weinglass, insisted that the First Amendment was on trial. Their witnesses were a virtual who’s who of the 1960s counterculture: Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Arlo Guthrie, Judy Collins, Norman Mailer, among them. The defendants constantly interrupted to protest what they felt were unfair rulings by the judge. The trial became a circus, all the while receiving intense media coverage. The convictions that resulted were subsequently overturned on appeal, but the trial remained a political and cultural touchstone, a mirror of the deep divisions in the country. The Trial of the Chicago 7 consists of the highlights from trial testimony with a brief epilogue describing what later happened to the principal figures.

Book Talking Voices

Download or read book Talking Voices written by Deborah Tannen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in readable, vivid, non-technical prose, this book, first published in 2007, presents the highly respected scholarly research that forms the foundation for Deborah Tannen's best-selling books about the role of language in human relationships. It provides a clear framework for understanding how ordinary conversation works to create meaning and establish relationships. A significant theoretical and methodological contribution to both linguistic and literary analysis, it uses transcripts of tape-recorded conversation to demonstrate that everyday conversation is made of features that are associated with literary discourse: repetition, dialogue, and details that create imagery. This second edition features a new introduction in which the author shows the relationship between this groundbreaking work and the research that has appeared since its original publication in 1989. In particular, she shows its relevance to the contemporary topic 'intertextuality', and provides a useful summary of research on that topic.

Book The Lincoln Assassination

    Book Details:
  • Author : William C. Edwards
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2010-10-01
  • ISBN : 0252091078
  • Pages : 1490 pages

Download or read book The Lincoln Assassination written by William C. Edwards and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 1490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 22, 1865, Brevet Colonel H. L. Burnett was assigned to head the investigation into the murder of President Abraham Lincoln and the attempted murder of Secretary of State William H. Seward. Burnett orchestrated the collection of thousands of documents for the Military Commission’s trial of the conspirators. This deep archive of documentary evidence--consisting of letters, depositions, eyewitness accounts, investigative reports, and other documents--provides invaluable insight into the historical, cultural, and judicial context of the investigation. Only a fraction of the information presented in these documents ever made its way into the trial, and most of it has never been readily accessible. By presenting an annotated and indexed transcription of these documents, this volume offers significant new access to information on the events surrounding the assassination and a vast new store of social and political history of the Civil War era. “With tears in my eyes I think it your duty to hang every rebel caught. I feel as bad as if was my own mother or father & will be one to volunteer to try & shoot every Southern man. May God have mercy on the man’s soul that done such a deed. With much Respect for our Country, I remain Weeping” --Anonymous letter, New York, April 15, 1865 “I know Booth. He was in the habit of coming to my place to shoot. . . . He shot well, and practiced to shoot with accuracy in every possible position. . . . He was a quick shot; always silent, reticent.” --Deposition of Benjamin Barker, Pistol Gallery proprietor

Book Capturing Talk The Institutional Practices Surrounding the Transcription of Spoken Language

Download or read book Capturing Talk The Institutional Practices Surrounding the Transcription of Spoken Language written by Martha Komter and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across a range of institutional settings, ‘practitioners’ and ‘professionals’ are eliciting and capturing spoken talk from ‘clients’ (Sarangi 1998), transcribing that talk, and later repurposing the transcripts in place of the original interaction. This Research Topic seeks both to shed light on this often overlooked institutional process, and to encourage further linguistic input into this area of professional practice. Transcription is almost always an institutional practice (Park & Bucholtz 2009), providing a written record of spoken interaction to be used by another party at a later date, in another setting or context. There are a number of underappreciated features and consequences of this transformational process, which we hope this Research Topic will expose and examine.

Book International Criminal Evidence

Download or read book International Criminal Evidence written by Richard May and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides practitioners, scholars and students with an in-depth analysis of the law of evidence before international criminal tribunals. It treats subjects such as admissibility; hearsay; identification evidence; forensic and documentary evidence. It also discusses procedural issues arising from fair trial rights, state cooperation, witness protection, and the compulsive powers of the court. The main focus of this work is the practice of the United Nations ad hoc International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. However, it traces the developments of the law of evidence back to the trials conducted by the Allied powers after the Second World War. The authors also discuss the future of the law in this field, with comments on the projected implementation of the Statute and the Rules of Procedure of the permanent International Criminal Court. They conclude with some general remarks on trends in international criminal evidence that will be helpful to international tribunals, "mixed" tribunals (such as those proposed for Sierra Leone and Cambodia), and national courts alike. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.
