Book Interwar Symphonies and the Imagination

Download or read book Interwar Symphonies and the Imagination written by Emily MacGregor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symphony has long been entangled with ideas of self and value. Though standard historical accounts suggest that composers' interest in the symphony was almost extinguished in the early 1930s, this book makes plain the genre's continued cultural dominance, and argues that the symphony can illuminate issues around space/geography, race, and postcolonialism in Germany, France, Mexico, and the United States. Focusing on a number of symphonies composed or premiered in 1933, this book recreates some of the cultural and political landscapes of an uncertain historical moment-a year when Hitler took power in Germany, and the Great Depression reached its peak in the United States. Interwar Symphonies and the Imagination asks what North American and European symphonies from the early 1930s can tell us about how people imagined selfhood during a period of international insecurity and political upheaval, of expansionist and colonial fantasies, scientised racism, and emergent fascism.

Book The Swedish Arbitration Act of 1999 Five Years on

Download or read book The Swedish Arbitration Act of 1999 Five Years on written by Lars Heuman and published by Juris Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, Sweden's Arbitration Act of 1999 was five years old. Inspired by UNCITRAL's Model Law while perpetuating features of the 1929 Act, it introduced many new concepts, such as establishing rules to determine the law applicable to the agreement to arbitrate, authorizing the arbitrators to decide the existence of facts and to fill gaps in contracts, making competition law issues arbitrable, affording the respondent the right to have the dispute resolved if the claimant withdraws its claim, authorizing truncated tribunals where an arbitrator obstructs the work of the tribunal. The new Act further gives arbitrators power to decide interim measures of protection and accepts that foreign parties waive in advance the possibility to set aside the arbitral award. In order to learn about the experience of Swedish and foreign practitioners, arbitrators and judges during the five years since the Act was adopted, the Stockholm Arbitration Report and the Institute of Arbitration Law at the University of Stockholm, organized a symposium on 7 and 8 October 2004. The symposium, was arranged in co-operation with the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the International Commercial Arbitration Court at the CCI of the Russian Federation, JAMS, the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), Revue de l’arbitrage, the Swedish Bar Association and UNCITRAL. This book contains the papers presented to the six working sessions and the full discussions that took place.

  • Author : Daniel A. Barber

Download or read book A House in the Sun written by Daniel A. Barber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A House in the Sun describes a number of experiments in solar house heating in American architectural, engineering, political, economic, and corporate contexts from the beginning of World War II until the late 1950s. Houses were built across the Midwest, Northeast, and Southwestern United States, and also proposed for sites in India, South Africa, and Morocco. These experiments developed in parallel to transformations in the discussion of modern architecture, relying on new materials and design ideas for both energy efficiency and claims to cultural relevance. Architects were among the myriad cultural and scientific actors to see the solar house as an important designed element of the American future. These experiments also developed as part of a wider analysis of the globe as an interconnected geophysical system. Perceived resource limitations in the immediate postwar period led to new understandings of the relationship between energy, technology and economy. The solar house - both as a charged object in the milieu of suburban expansion, and as a means to raise the standard of living in developing economies - became an important site for social, technological, and design experimentation. This led to new forms of expertise in architecture and other professions. Daniel Barber argues that this mid-century interest in solar energy was one of the first episodes in which resource limitations were seen as an opportunity for design to attain new relevance for potential social and cultural transformations. Furthermore, the solar discussion established both an intellectual framework and a funding structure for the articulation of and response to global environmental concerns in subsequent decades. In presenting evidence of resource tensions at the beginning of the Cold War, the book offers a new perspective on the histories of architecture, technology, and environmentalism, one more fully entangled with the often competing dynamics of geopolitical and geophysical pressures.

Book Peacebuilding Memory and Reconciliation

Download or read book Peacebuilding Memory and Reconciliation written by Bruno Charbonneau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to bridge the gap between what are generally referred to as ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ approaches to peacebuilding. After the experience of a physical and psychological trauma, the period of individual healing and recovery is intertwined with political and social reconciliation. The prospects for social and political reconciliation are undermined when a ‘top-down’ approach is favoured over the ‘bottom-up strategy’- the prioritization of structural stability over societal well-being. Peacebuilding, Memory and Reconciliation explores the inextricable link between psychological recovery and socio-political reconciliation, and the political issues that dominate this relationship. Through an examination of the construction of social narratives about or for peace, the text offers a new perspective on peacebuilding, which challenges and questions the very nature of the dichotomy between ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ approaches. This book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding, peace and conflict studies, social psychology, political science and IR in general.
