If the dynamics are linear and do not change over time, the classical theory of Lotka (1907) and Leslie (1945) is the central tool of demography. This book addresses the situation when the assumption of constancy is dropped. In many practical situations, a population will display unpredictable variation over time in its vital rates, which must then be described in statistical terms. Most of this book is concerned with the theory of populations which are subject to random temporal changes in their vital rates, although other kinds of variation (e. g. , cyclical) are also dealt with. The central questions are: how does temporal variation work its way into a population's future, and how does it affect our interpretation of a population's past. The results here are directed at demographers of humans and at popula tion biologists. The uneven mathematical level is dictated by the material, but the book should be accessible to readers interested in population the ory. (Readers looking for background or prerequisites will find much of it in Hal Caswell's Matrix population models: construction, analysis, and in terpretation (Sinauer 1989) ). This book is in essence a progress report and is deliberately brief; I hope that it is not mystifying. I have not attempted to be complete about either the history or the subject, although most sig nificant results and methods are presented.

This and a companion volume, related to new practical applications, constitute the proceedings of the conference, and reflect the state of the art of the rapidly developing subject. The conference was held in Boca Raton, Florida during May 9-11, 1990 hosted by the Center for Applied Stochastics Research of Florida Atlantic University. A total of 20 technical sessions were organized, and attended by eighty participants from 12 countries. Special emphases of the conference were placed on two areas: applications to earthquake engineering and stochastic stability of nonlinear systems. Two sessions were dedicated to the memory of late Professor Frank Kozin, one of the founders and most active contributors to the stochastic stability theory. We are indebted to the National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER) for financial support. Most credit belongs to each of the authors whose contributions were the very basis for the undoubted success of the conference. Its goal is twofold: First, it presents most researchwork that has been done during his Ph.D., or at least the part of the work that is related with the joint spectral radius. This work was concerned with theoretical developments (part I) as well as the study of some applications (part II). As a second goal, it was the author’s feeling that a survey on the state of the art on the joint spectral radius was really missing in the literature, so that the ?rst two chapters of part I present such a survey. The other chapters mainly report personal research, except Chapter 5 which presents animportantapplicationofthejointspectralradius:thecontinuityofwavelet functions. The ?rst part of this monograph is dedicated to theoretical results. The ?rst two chapters present the above mentioned survey on the joint spectral radius. Its minimum-growth counterpart, the joint spectral subradius, is also considered. The next two chapters point out two speci?c theoretical topics, that are important in practical applications: the particular case of nonne- tive matrices, and the Finiteness Property. The second part considers applications involving the joint spectral radius.
