Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Manchester Goethe Society, 1886-1893: Being Original Papers and Summaries of Papers Read Before the Society, to Which Is Added a Classified Catalogue of the Society's Library In a former paper which I read before you I gave some of the results of a study of Groethe's letters and early works up to the date of his reaching Weimar in 1775. Since then I have been reading his letters of the early Weimar years, the greater part of which were written to the Frau von Stein, and intend at a later date to read a paper founded upon them. But I discovered that before one could do so in a satisfactory way there are certain points which require to be cleared up, at all events here in England, where lives of Goethe and writings upon Goethe as a rule take for granted the accuracy of Mr. Lewes's biography as giving a true picture of Weimar, its Court and social life, and a correct estimate of Goethe's relations to the Frau von Stein. Intending as I do to assume upon these points a view at variance with Mr. Lewes's, I considered that in a paper which will have to deal with subject-matters of considerable extent it would be strategically a mistake to proceed whilst such formidable foes were left at large in the rear. Without suggesting that Mr. Lewes did anything but try to arrive at the truth of the matter, I would say that in the first place when he wrote Goethe was, so to say, under the shadow of his own life, and of his own works.
