Book Gloucestershire

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Verey
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2002-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300097337
  • Pages : 964 pages

Download or read book Gloucestershire written by David Verey and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gloucestershire 2: The Vale and the Forest of Dean and its companion, Gloucestershire I: The Cotswolds, provide a lively and uniquely comprehensive guide to the architecture of Gloucestershire. Alan Brooks's extensively revised and expanded editions of David Verey's original volumes bring together the latest research on a county unusually rich in attractive and interesting buildings. The area covered lies on both sides of the River Severn, rising from flat alluvial lands to the lower slopes of the Cotswold Escarpment on the east and the rough wooded hills of the Forest of Dean on the Welsh border, with its distinctive industrial inheritance. Architecture is generally more varied and unpredictable than in the Cotswolds: stone, timber, brick and stucco all have local strongholds. The Vale is most famous for its two great churches, Gloucester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey, both Norman buildings with brilliantly inventive late medieval modifications. The other major settlement is the spa town of Cheltenham, with its fine parades of Regency terraces. Country houses include Thornbury Castle, greatest of Early Tudor private houses, timber-framed manors such as Preston Court, and the extravagantly Neo-Gothic Toddington; churches range from the enigmatic Anglo-Saxon pair at Deerhurst to Randall Wells's Arts-and-Crafts experiment at Kempley. Amongst the memorable post-war landmarks are the suspension bridges and nuclear power stations on the banks of the Severn, and Aztec West, one of the best British business parks, on the northern fringes of Bristol. Visitors and residents alike will find their understanding and enjoyment of west Gloucestershire transformed by this book.

Book The Roots of William Tyndale s Theology

Download or read book The Roots of William Tyndale s Theology written by Ralph S Werrell and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Tyndale is one of the most important of the early reformers, and particularly through his translation of the New Testament, has had a formative influence on the development of the English language and religious thought. The sources of his theology are, however, not immediately clear, and historians have often seen him as being influenced chiefly by continental, and in particular Lutheran, ideas. In his important new book, Ralph Werrell shows that the most important influences were to befound closer to home, and that the home-grown Wycliffite tradition was of far greater importance. In doing so, Werrell shows that the apparent differences between Tyndale's writings from the period before 1530 and his later writings, in the period leading up to his arrest and martyrdom in 1526, are spurious, and that a simpler explanation is that his ideas were formed as a result of an upbringing in a household in which Wycliffite ideas were accepted. Werrell explores the impact of humanist writers, and above all Erasmus, on the development of Tyndale's thought. He also shows how far Tyndale's theology, fully developed by 1525, was from that of the continental reformers. He then examines in detail some of the main strands of Tyndale's thought - and in particular, doctrines such as the Fall, Salvation, the Sacraments and the Blood of Christ - showing how different they are from Luther and most other contemporary reformers. While Tyndale, in his early writings, used some of Luther's writings, he made theological changes and additions to Luther's text. The influences of John Trevisa, Wyclif and the later Wycliffite writers were far more important. Werrell shows that without accepting the huge influence of the Wycliffite ideas, Tyndale's significance as a theologian, and the development of the English Reformation cannot be fully understood.

Book A Cumulative Bibliography of Medieval Military History and Technology

Download or read book A Cumulative Bibliography of Medieval Military History and Technology written by Kelly DeVries and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second update of "A Cumulative Bibliography of Medieval Military History and Technology," which appeared in 2002. It is meant to do two things: to present references to works on medieval military history and technology not included in the first two volumes; and to present references to all books and articles published on medieval military history and technology from 2003 to 2006. These references are divided into the same categories as in the first two volumes and cover a chronological period of the same length, from late antiquity to 1648, again in order to present a more complete picture of influences on and from the Middle Ages. It also continues to cover the same geographical area as the first and second volume, in essence Europe and the Middle East, or, again, influences on and from this area. The languages of these bibliographical references reflect this geography.
