Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compiled by reporters for the legendary Last Post, this book presents a vital, on-the-spot account of the emergence of militant nationalist and labour movements in Quebec in the late 60s and early 70s. It is a documentary record of the most crucial events of 1968 to 1972 in Quebec--the first stirrings of rebellion in the industrial towns, the heroism of the Mouvement de Libération du Taxi and the 'Lapalme guys', the drama of the October Crisis of 1970. It goes on to describe the birth of the labour unions' Common Front in the La Presse strike and, in an important final chapter, analyzes the Front's spectacular show of strength of 1972. Invaluable as a sourcebook, Quebec: A Chronicle sorts through a multitude of political myths and rumours that thwart understanding of Quebec's development to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Newfoundland entered the Canadian Confederation in 1949, it was hoped it would promote greater unity between the Maritime provinces, as Term 29 of the Newfoundland Act explicitly linked the region's economic and political fortunes. On the surface, the union seemed like an unprecedented opportunity to resurrect the regional spirit of the Maritime Rights movement of the 1920s, which advocated a cooperative approach to addressing regional underdevelopment. However, Newfoundland's arrival did little at first to bring about a comprehensive Atlantic Canadian regionalism. Inventing Atlantic Canada is the first book to analyse the reaction of the Maritime provinces to Newfoundland's entry into Confederation. Drawing on editorials, government documents, and political papers, Corey Slumkoski examines how each Maritime province used the addition of a new provincial cousin to fight underdevelopment. Slumkoski also details the rise of regional cooperation characterized by the Atlantic Revolution of the mid-1950s, when Maritime leaders began to realize that by acting in isolation their situations would only worsen.

Book The Abernathy Chronicles Part Two

Download or read book The Abernathy Chronicles Part Two written by Irving McMurren and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics has always held a special place in the goals of many of the Abernathy tribe. This volume describes three of them. One is a paleontologist, one is a small town sheriff and the third is a lawyer. All of these men live and operate in Canada. One even becomes Prime Minister. The Internet is used as a political tool and many of the suggestions in the book make common sense and offer a truly bipartisan approach to many of the problems that face us all, regardless of country. The stories have humor and since all Abernathys are women chasers and drink vodka they may even represent today's politicians.

Book The Abernathy Chronicles Part Five

Download or read book The Abernathy Chronicles Part Five written by Irving McMurren and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is a part of all our lives. The Abernathy clan is no exception. It would be destined that at least two of them would respond to the call for worship, and two of them did. The Reverend Malcolm Abernathy followed the faith of the Anglican Church and Father Umberto Abernathy opted for the Roman Catholic Church. These two men spent most of their time in Canada, Malcolm getting into politics for a while and Umberto introduced what he considered a more practical approach to awarding of penances. In both instances the Abernathy genes prevailed and neither one practiced abstinence which was a more serious situation with Umberto than with Malcolm. Their lives and exploits are not to be taken too seriously. They are obviously figments of the imagination of the author, and are meant to be enjoyed or possibly envied.

Book Saltwater Chronicles

Download or read book Saltwater Chronicles written by Lesley Choyce and published by Nimbus+ORM. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award–winning author celebrates the everyday disasters and discoveries that shape a life in this memoir of love, loss, and adventure in Nova Scotia. If Lesley Choyce was not a surfer, he would not have dropped out of graduate school in Manhattan in 1978 and moved to Nova Scotia—a decision that made all the difference. In Saltwater Chronicles, he reflects on the ambitious, idealistic, and brash young man he once was, while the older man ahead of him beckons him forward with a mischievous grin. In between, Choyce adapts to the crisis of becoming a respectable citizen. He experiences the death of his father and of his family dog. He helps guide his wife through cancer as they ride the North Atlantic waves and record a most human range of sorrows and joys. In this, his one-hundredth book, Lesley Choyce takes readers along as he writes about nearly everything under the sun from his home by the sea on the North Atlantic coast of Canada—all of it most ordinary and extraordinary at the same time.

Many of the people in this book are woefully under-appreciated, thus this book has attempted to bring these important historical figures to light.

Book The Wolfe Chronicles

    Book Details:
  • Author : John S. Hatch
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2001-06-14
  • ISBN : 059518149X
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book The Wolfe Chronicles written by John S. Hatch and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in modern-day Quebec city, the story follows the fortunes of a certain James Wolfe, an 'actor' so dedicated to the portrayal of the last moments of his famous military and antecedent of the famous 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham, that he is willing to incorporate into his shaky personality several of the General's better and lesser known faults and foibles, not excluding severe hypochondria and more than a touch of paranoia. His work is assisted by his fabulously patient and loyal wife Helene, as well as by the wildly innovative, opera-loving psychiatrist Dr. Gunnar Boll, who was actually the actor's esteemed dentist before losing certain indispensible digits in a tragic goose-hunting accident caused by his dog, Walid Jumblatt. The Wolfe Chronicles is part history and part humor with a sharp salute to the philosophy of the absurd; and while set in Quebec, its themes are easily recognizable as universal.
