Download or read book Debussy written by Stefan Jarociński and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first, Debussy's music lent itself to all kinds of convenient critical labels, of which the most fashionable has always been 'impressionist'. In this book the doyen of Polish musicologists examines Debussy's output against the twin backgrounds of his upbringing and of contemporary movements in the other arts besides music. He concludes that the 'impressionist' analogy between music and painting has been too deceptively obvious, and that the movement with which Debussy's art is most deeply impregnated is Symbolism. This he shows by a review of the general aesthetic ferments of this age, by close analysis of Debussy's music, his early works in particular, and by well-directed quotation from Debussy's own many writings on the subject. In the course of his argument he leads the reader down many unexpected bypaths in aesthetics; his book is both an original contribution to musicology and a philosophical meditation on the whole of the art of this unusually fertile and adventurous period.
Download or read book The Porthole written by Adriano Spatola and published by Otis Books Seismicity Editions. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Translated from the Italian by Beppe Cavatorta and Polly Geller. Recipient of the 1966 "Ferro di Cavallo" prize for a first novel, THE PORTHOLE was a highly praised and controversial debut. Pulling together diverse elements from the musical experiments of Cage, Schnebel and Kagel, the pictorial innovations of assemblage and pop art, x-rated comics, and dialogue from horror and World War II films, Spatola liberated his narrative from the stultifying edifice of Italian prose. The Porthole remains even more important today for its remarkable achievement in that fertile period of experimental literature. A co-publication of Otis Books/Seismicity Editions and Agincourt Press.

Download or read book Last Voyage written by Giovanni Pascoli and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first appearance of PascoliÆs poems in English translation provides an introduction to his work for the English-speaking reader. The first section of the book includes some of PascoliÆs brief lyric poems, many of them displaying his innovative use of image narrative. We see scenes of country life in his village near Barga, Italy, in the Apuan Alps, at the end of the 19th century. We see the aurora borealis, chickens, donkeys, women hanging laundry, the new railway and men crushing wheat. The second part of the book consists of three somewhat formal narrative poems set in classical Rome and Greece. The book ends with a long narrative sequence, an exciting and poignant re-imagining of OdysseusÆ famous tale told from the perspective of an old man. The aging hero falls asleep by the fire with Penelope and dreams a final voyage, in which he reassembles his old crew and visits the scenes of his earlier adventures: Circe, the Sirens, the Cyclops, Lotus Eaters and Calypso.
Download or read book Dante s Tenzone with Forese Donati written by Fabian Alfie and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-11-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘And by now, mind, it’s too late to redeem your debts by giving up guzzling.’ Dante's poetic correspondence (or tenzone) with Forese Donati, a relative of his wife, was rife with crude insults: the two men derided one another on topics ranging from sexual dysfunction and cowardice to poverty and thievery. But in his Commedia, rather than denying this correspondence, Dante repeatedly acknowledged and evoked the memory of his youthful put-downs. Dante's Tenzone with Forese Donati examines the lasting impact of these sonnets on Dante's writings and Italian literary culture, notably in the work of Giovanni Boccaccio. Fabian Alfie expands on derision as an ethical dimension of medieval literature, both facilitating the reprehension of vice and encouraging ongoing debates about the true nature of nobility. Outlining a broad perspective on the uses of literary insult, Dante's Tenzone with Forese Donati also provides an evocative glimpse of Dante's day-to-day life in the twelfth century.

Download or read book An Anthology of Modern Italian Poetry written by Ned Condini and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian poetry of the last century is far from homogeneous: genres and movements have often been at odds with one another, engaging the economic, political, and social tensions of post-Unification Italy. The thirty-eight poets included in this anthology, some of whose poems are translated here for the first time, represent this literary diversity and competition: there are symbolists (Gabriele D'Annunzio), free-verse satirists (Gian Pietro Lucini), hermetic poets (Salvatore Quasimodo), feminist poets (Sibilla Aleramo), twilight poets (Sergio Corazzini), fragmentists (Camillo Sbarbaro), new lyricists (Eugenio Montale), neo-avant-gardists (Alfredo Giuliani), and neorealists (Pier Paolo Pasolini)—among many others.

Fiction. Translated from the Italian by Evgenia Matt. CEPHALONIA 1943-2001 is a narrative poem in the form of a dialogue or rather, a two- voiced monologue: a fragmented epic, contextualizing the massacre of Italian soldiers perpetrated by German troops in the days following the armistice, signed between Italy and the Allied Forces on September 8, 1943. The voices belong to Ettore B, an Italian soldier fallen in combat, but possibly executed, and Hans D, a German businessman born with a silver spoon in his mouth, that is a man who always lands on his feet, before, during and above all after the war.
