Book Emerson s English Traits and the Natural History of Metaphor

Download or read book Emerson s English Traits and the Natural History of Metaphor written by David LaRocca and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphors are ubiquitous and yet-or, for that very reason-go largely unseen. We are all variously susceptible to a blindness or blurry vision of metaphors; yet even when they are seen clearly, we are left to situate the ambiguities, conflations and contradictions they regularly present-logically, aesthetically and morally. David LaRocca's book serves as a set of 'reminders' of certain features of the natural history of our language-especially the tropes that permeate and define it. As part of his investigation, LaRocca turns to Ralph Waldo Emerson's only book on a single topic, English Traits (1856), which teems with genealogical and generative metaphors-blood, birth, plants, parents, family, names and race. In the first book-length study of English Traits in over half a century, LaRocca considers the presence of metaphors in Emerson's fertile text-a unique work in his expansive corpus, and one that is regularly overlooked. As metaphors are encountered in Emerson's book, and drawn from a long history of usage in work by others, a reader may realize (or remember) what is inherent and encoded in our language, but rarely seen: how metaphors circulate in speech and through texts to become the lifeblood of thought.

Book The historical importance of leadership traits From trait theory to charismatic leadership

Download or read book The historical importance of leadership traits From trait theory to charismatic leadership written by Lea Graeser and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf, course: Intercultural Management and Leadership, language: English, abstract: This paper focusses on the trait approach on leadership, whereby this theory concentrates on the personal traits of leaders. The trait theory was one of the first ones to study leadership. Different developments within the past and present, as well as a future outlook are explained and analysed. The approach developed from the assumption that great leaders are born to the hypothesis that great leaders can be made when there is a need for that. Successful leadership is extended to an interaction between the traits of a leader and the situation itself. Today’s relevant aspects of the theory are the Big Five, Emotional Intelligence and Skills Leadership. In this light, this paper investigates future developments of leadership, focussing on charismatic and visionary leadership. Then, it presents an evaluation of the trait approach, its strengths and weaknesses and the importance of leadership traits for the future.

Book Biological Control

Download or read book Biological Control written by Peter G. Mason and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Control: Global Impacts, Challenges and Future Directions of Pest Management provides a historical summary of organisms and main strategies used in biological control, as well as the key challenges confronting biological control in the 21st century. Biological control has been implemented for millennia, initially practised by growers moving beneficial species from one local area to another. Today, biological control has evolved into a formal science that provides ecosystem services to protect the environment and the resources used by humanity. With contributions from dedicated scientists and practitioners from around the world, this comprehensive book highlights important successes, failures and challenges in biological control efforts. It advocates that biological control must be viewed as a global endeavour and provides suggestions to move practices forward in a changing world. Biological Control is an invaluable resource for conservation specialists, pest management practitioners and those who research invasive species, as well as students studying pest management science.

Book The Biostatistics of Aging

Download or read book The Biostatistics of Aging written by Gilberto Levy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical and clarifying approach to aging and aging-related diseases Providing a thorough and extensive theoretical framework, The Biostatistics of Aging: From Gompertzian Mortality to an Index of Aging-Relatedness addresses the surprisingly subtlenotion—with consequential biomedical and public health relevance—of what it means for acondition to be related to aging. In this pursuit, the book presents a new quantitative methodto examine the relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors to mortality anddisease incidence in a population. With input from evolutionary biology, population genetics, demography, and epidemiology, this medically motivated book describes an index of aging-relatedness and also features: Original results on the asymptotic behavior of the minimum of time-to-event random variables, which extends those of the classical statistical theory of extreme values A comprehensive and satisfactory explanation based on biological principles of the Gompertz pattern of mortality in human populations The development of an evolution-based model of causation relevant to mortality and aging-related diseases of complex etiology An explanation of how and why the description of human mortality by the Gompertz distribution can be improved upon from first principles The amply illustrated analysis of real-world data, including a program for conducting the analysis written in the freely available R statistical software Technical appendices including mathematical material as well as an extensive and multidisciplinary bibliography on aging and aging-related diseases The Biostatistics of Aging: From Gompertzian Mortality to an Index of Aging-Relatedness is an excellent resource for practitioners and researchers with an interest in aging and aging-related diseases from the fields of medicine, biology, gerontology, biostatistics, epidemiology, demography, and public health.
