Download or read book Medicare Laboratory Payment Policy written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-04 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical laboratory tests play an integral role in helping physicians diagnose and treat patients. New developments in laboratory technology offer the prospect of improvements in diagnosis and care, but will place an increased burden on the payment system. Medicare, the federal program providing coverage of health-care services for the elderly and disabled, is the largest payer of clinical laboratory services. Originally designed in the early 1980s, Medicare's payment policy methodology for outpatient laboratory services has not evolved to take into account technology, market, and regulatory changes, and is now outdated. This report examines the current Medicare payment methodology for outpatient clinical laboratory services in the context of environmental and technological trends, evaluates payment policy alternatives, and makes recommendations to improve the system.

In working through the comprehensive, real-world scenarios, readers deal firsthand with interpreting data from two, three or four disciplines (Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Urinalysis), integrating the facts (laboratory data) from different departments and thinking critically about what they mean. Includes 55 cases--11 Blood Bank cases; 12 Chemistry cases; 10 Hematology/Coagulation cases; 5 Immunology/Serology cases; 10 Microbiology cases; 7 Urinalysis cases. Technicians and technologists who have been out of the field for awhile and are in the process of reentry into the profession and technicians and technologists who are looking for a general review of clinical laboratory science.
Download or read book Laboratory Quality Management System written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving, maintaining and improving accuracy, timeliness and reliability are major challenges for health laboratories. Countries worldwide committed themselves to build national capacities for the detection of, and response to, public health events of international concern when they decided to engage in the International Health Regulations implementation process. Only sound management of quality in health laboratories will enable countries to produce test results that the international community will trust in cases of international emergency. This handbook was developed through collaboration between the WHO Lyon Office for National Epidemic Preparedness and Response, the United States of America Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Laboratory Systems, and the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). It is based on training sessions and modules provided by the CDC and WHO in more than 25 countries, and on guidelines for implementation of ISO 15189 in diagnostic laboratories, developed by CLSI. This handbook is intended to provide a comprehensive reference on Laboratory Quality Management System for all stakeholders in health laboratory processes, from management, to administration, to bench-work laboratorians. This handbook covers topics that are essential for quality management of a public health or clinical laboratory. They are based on both ISO 15189 and CLSI GP26-A3 documents. Each topic is discussed in a separate chapter. The chapters follow the framework developed by CLSI and are organized as the "12 Quality System Essentials".

Download or read book Medical Laboratory Technology written by Valerie Dietz Polansky and published by Boston Medical Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as a study aid to improve student performance on national certification examinations in medical laboratory technology (clinical laboratory science) at both the technician and technologist levels. The new organisation of topics also makes the book useful to students as they prepare for examinations in their educational programs and to laboratory personnel who are cross-training. The book is based on over twenty years of experience teaching hundreds of students who have successfully passed certification examinations at both technician and technologist levels. The book is written in rapid-fire question/answer format, without distractors that may be mistakenly assimilated as the correct answer. Readers are challenged to generate their own answer rather than choosing one based on recognition or guessing. The two boxes next to each question are a time-management aid that enable the reader to keep track of correct and incorrect answers and quickly identify topics that require further study. Many of the answers provide additional information beyond what was requested in the question. These questions and answers provide a review of the knowledge-base required to answer typical examination questions.
