Book The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy 1363 1477

Download or read book The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy 1363 1477 written by Robert Douglas Smith and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new exploration of the history and development of gunpowder weapons in the 15th century based on the artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy. The four Valois Dukes of Burgundy created, in little more than a century, a fabulously wealthy and independent state. Their centralised control and chancellery have bequeathed to us a vast treasure trove of documents, including accounts and inventories of the Masters of the artillery under the later Dukes. Although many of these were extracted and transcribed in the late nineteenth century, modern historians have largely ignored their unprecedented insights into fifteenth-century guns and their use. When Charles the Bold, the last Valois Duke, took on the combined Swiss confederate forces in 1476 he lost not just the battles and his personal fortune, but much of his artillerytrain as well. Of the dozens of cannons captured, at least 25 pieces survive in Swiss museums. The documents that survive from the Valois state give us, almost for the first time in medieval Europe, the ability to see the course of history in a period when Europe was undergoing some of the most profound changes before the 20th century. The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy is the first attempt to combine all these sources, bringing newand fresh insights into the development and use of artillery in the fifteenth century. Moreover this is the first modern study of medieval cannon, one of the most important discoveries of the post-classical world. KELLY DeVRIES has authored numerous books and articles on medieval warfare. ROBERT DOUGLAS SMITH formerly Head of Conservation in the Royal Armouries, Tower of London, is an acknowledged expert on medieval artillery. This study is thefirst major fruit of their combined researches.

Book excerpt: 'Suddenly out of the darkness two masked men in camouflage clothing ran towards me pointing something shaped like a gun.' At25 years of age Maud Kells went to the Congo as a medical missionary with WEC International. She went to replace others who had been recently martyred. Years later she herself found herself close to death on the floor of her own operating theatre. A rebel soldier's bullet went straight through her and only the Lords grace and her presence of mind saved her life in the end. Pushing her back against the wall to stop the flow of blood she gave herself enough time for other medical staff to come to her aid. This is the story of a young Irish girl who went to Africa despite her families objections due to the crystal clear call on her life of a God who assured her, 'I am with you I am all you need'. Maud found that out to be absolutely true in all circumstances Maud was recently awarded the OBE from Prince William

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If necessity is the mother of invention, the AC-130 gunship was definitely her offspring. Ghostriders: Mors De Caelis is a comprehensive history of AC-130 gunship combat operations in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The story begins with the first AC-130 in 1968, and ends in 1975 at the end of the war in Vietnam. It tells the life and death stories of Spectre crews, who faced extreme danger while hunting trucks on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and providing fire support for US and allied ground forces. Though the AC-130 was credited with 10,000 trucks destroyed, this phenomenal achievement came with a hefty price. Fifty-two Spectre crewmen and six AC-130s were lost during combat operations in Laos and Vietnam. Written in third-person omniscient point of view by an experienced combat veteran and Spectre Historian, all aspects of the story are derived from official declassified records and personal interviews. The level of detail and context figuratively puts the reader in the aircraft as an observer, flying alongside a Spectre crew in combat. Above all, this is the story of Spectre—accurate, detailed, compelling, and unique.
