Book Traffic Signal Warrants

Download or read book Traffic Signal Warrants written by H. Gene Hawkins and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic signals are one of the most restrictive forms of traffic control that can be used at an intersection. In order to ensure that the use of traffic signals is limited to favorable situations, a series of traffic signal warrants has been developed to define the minimum traffic conditions that must be present before signal installation can be considered. This document provides transportation officials with detailed information about conducting a traffic signal warrant analysis. It addresses many of the issues that have typically been left to interpretation and is intended to improve the consistency of the warranting process.

Book Responding to Requests for Traffic Signals that May Not Meet the Warrants of the MUTCD

Download or read book Responding to Requests for Traffic Signals that May Not Meet the Warrants of the MUTCD written by Kenneth A. Winter and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unwarranted signals may exacerbate problems they are designed to relieve. When warranted, signals offer an effective method for controlling traffic at intersections and eliminating conflicts in general. But what happens when unwarranted or marginally warranted signals are installed? Could such an act have a negative impact on crash rates, traffic flow, pedestrian volume, or other important issues? DOTs rely on the 8 warrants outlined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/) to help determine where signals are justified. In addition, many states use a state supplement to help address unique needs. Such is the case in Virginia, where the National MUTCD was adopted for use in 1989 and "Part VI," the state supplement, became effective in 2003. States also rely on engineering studies of intersections in making individual determinations. A literature search reveals that many states also rely on a set of guidelines for traffic signal warrant analysis to determine when to remove signals that are no longer warranted. This can help DOT officials make consistent decisions ... and explain the resulting outcomes to political or community groups.

Book Signalized Intersections

Download or read book Signalized Intersections written by Daiheng Ni and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook introduces the basics principles of intersection signalization including need studies, signal phasing, sequencing, timing, as well as more advanced topics such as detectors, controllers, actuated control schemes, and signal coordination. The book covers a variety of topics critical to the set up and operation of intersections controlled by traffic signals. Professor Ni imparts a basic understanding of how intersections work, what justifies intersection signalization, how to properly design phasing and timing plans for intersections, what is needed to run traffic-responsive signals, the workings of traffic controller cabinets, and how to set up signal coordination at multiple intersections—competencies essential to transportation professionals in charge of traffic operation at federal, state, and local levels. Aimed at students in transportation engineering programs with a focus on intersection signalization, the book is also ideal for researchers of traffic dynamics and municipal civil and transportation engineers.
