Book Crafting Heritage A Journey through India s Artistic Traditions

Download or read book Crafting Heritage A Journey through India s Artistic Traditions written by Dr Poonam Bhagchandani and published by LWRN Studio. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, "Crafting Heritage: A Journey through India's Artistic Traditions," captures the spirit of the traditional crafts of the nation and acts as a bright mosaic in the kaleidoscope of India's cultural legacy. We find ourselves entwined in the elaborate stories of Madhubani Paintings, the ageless appeal of Pashmina Shawls, the delicate craftsmanship of Nirmal Toys, and the rustic beauty of Bamboo Handicrafts as we set out on this adventure. Every chapter serves as a window into the generations-old workmanship, demonstrating the tenacity and inventiveness of Indian craftspeople. We extend an invitation to readers to journey through the historical passages described in the introduction of this book, where Bidriware gleams as a brilliant Deccan heritage and Blue Pottery reflects the cultural interchange along old trade routes. Through delving into the chapters on Cane and Bamboo Weaving, Marble Stone Craft, Saris and Silk, Bandhani, Warli Painting, and other related topics, we uncover the connections that link customs with creativity, legacy with modern significance. Crafting Heritage is a celebration of the hands that define India's creative character, not just a compilation of chapters. It pays homage to the artists who work so hard to create the intricate fabric that is India's cultural heritage with every brushstroke, thread knot, and hand mould. With the aim of fostering a more profound comprehension of the narratives, methods, obstacles, and achievements that characterise India's Crafting Heritage, this book aims to preserve and appreciate these ageless crafts.

Book The Making of a Modern Indian Artist Craftsman

Download or read book The Making of a Modern Indian Artist Craftsman written by Naman Ahuja and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of the Modern Indian Artist-Craftsman is intended to be a biographical and critical insight into the work of the potter, painter and photographer Devi Prasad. Apart from the making of his personal history and his times, it leads us to why the act of making (art) itself takes on such a fundamental philosophical significance in his life. This, the author explains, derives directly from his absorption of Gandhi’s philosophy that looked at the act of making or doing as an ethical ideal, and further back to the impact of the Arts and Crafts Movement on the ideology of ‘Swadeshi’ and on the milieu of Santiniketan. This book examines his art along with his role in political activism which, although garnered on Indian soil made him crisscross national borders and assume an important role in the international arena of war resistance. Devi Prasad graduated from Tagore’s Santiniketan in 1944 when he joined the Hindustani Talimi Sangh (which promulgated Nayee Taleem) at Gandhi’s ashram Sevagram as Art ‘Teacher’. His political consciousness saw him participate actively in the Quit India Movement in 1942, in Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan and later from 1962 onward as Secretary General (later Chairman) of the War Resisters’ International, the oldest world pacifist organisation based in London. From there he was able to extend his Gandhian values internationally. All of this, while continuing with his life as a prolific artist. Rather than view them as separate worlds or professions, Devi harmonises them within an ethical and conscionable whole. He has written widely on the inextricable link between peace and creativity, on child /basic education, Gandhi and Tagore, on politics and art, in English, Hindi and Bangla. In 2007 he was awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi Ratna and in 2008, the Desikottama by Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The richness of the arts of India is overwhelming, and perhaps most noticeably so in its architecture. This innovative volume reveals the exquisite detail of the decorative compositions, their finesse, precision, and creativity. It also highlights the skill, patience, and pictorial imagination of the many thousands of craftsmen and their patrons. The timeline runs for almost two thousand years, from the Buddhist stupa at Sanchi of the first century BC/AD to Rajput palace interiors of c. 1900. Hundreds of atmospheric photo- graphs are juxtaposed with graphic transpositions of the designs, patterns, and ornamentation to reveal the nature of the architectural detail, where stone, wood, mirror work, and plaster are transformed into masterworks of decorative art.
