Book What Do Unions Do

Download or read book What Do Unions Do written by Out Of Print and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 1985-10-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive economic assessment of unions by two Harvard economists challenges the prevailing view of trade unions as monopolies whose main function is to raise their members' wages at the expense of the general public. Using data from individuals and business establishments, they demonstrate that in addition to raising wages, unions have significant non-wage effects on industrial life. Unionization, they argue, often leads to higher productivity, more stable work force and provides protection for vulnerable employees. They describe the role of unions as the collective voice of workers, which creates a vehicle of direct communication between workers and management.

  • Pages : 1506 pages

Download or read book United States Code written by United States and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 1506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

Book Women Work and Trade Unions

Download or read book Women Work and Trade Unions written by Anne Munro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on working-class women, catering and cleaning workers, and the way their interests were presented in trade unions. It argues that there is an institutional bias within trade unions which precludes the full representation of women's interests. Based on empirical research into two trade unions in the National Health Service, the book stresses the importance of how women's work is structured, in order to investigate the role of trade unions in challenging or reproducing inequalities.

Book The Union and Its Members

Download or read book The Union and Its Members written by Julian Barling and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores three key topics in social psychology: the manner in which labor unions shape organizational behavior, a relationship which has been effectively ignored in the literature; the organization of the union itself, a fascinating test case for the organizational psychologist; and the way in which theories and methods of organizational psychology may assist labor organizations in achieving their goals. Since the union maintains unique characteristics of democracy, conflict, and voluntary participation within a larger organization, the authors offer a detailed study of a union's dynamics, including demographic and personality predictors of membership, voting behavior, union commitment and loyalty, the nature of participation, leadership styles, collective bargaining, among other topics. This is the first book to be published in the new Industrial/Organizational Psychology Series. It will be of interest to not only industrial/organizational psychologists in industry, academia, and private and public organizations, but to graduate students in psychology departments and business schools, and to academics and professionals in business and management studying industrial relations.

Book British Trade Unions Today

Download or read book British Trade Unions Today written by Clive Jenkins and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Trade Unions Today is concerned with the trade union movement in Britain, how it operates, and how it strives constantly to achieve its objectives. This text examines why the British people hold trade union membership cards, why they do it, how they do it, what they expect from their unions, and how the trade union movement affects the citizens of Britain. This book consists of nine chapters and begins by discussing the history of trade unions in Britain, with emphasis on how various forms of organization came about and how they are now. The next chapter focuses on the legal battles faced by British unions to fight for their right of formal existence and compares the legal framework for industrial relations in the United Kingdom with that in the United States. The reader is then introduced to the societal goals of trade unions and what they have achieved so far, particularly with respect to improving wages and employment conditions. The chapters that follow consider the rationale for the unions' establishment of a national center, the election and selection of union officers, and union communications and publicity. This book also examines how trade unions conduct collective bargaining, along with their finances, and concludes by assessing the future of the unions in the context of the social environment in which they operate. This reference material will be useful to trade union leaders and members as well as companies and policymakers who deal with unions.
