Book Trade Unions and Oligopolies in Vertically Structured Industries

Download or read book Trade Unions and Oligopolies in Vertically Structured Industries written by Thomas Grandner and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis combines models of industrial organization (IO) with micro-economic models of wage bargaining between trade unions and employers. Partial equilibrium models are standard in IO. Typically the labor market is ignored. The advantage of this method is that it is possible to analyze more complex situations, for example strategic behavior. But by including the wage bargaining process new insights into problems of industrial economics can be obtained. In this book for the first time the analysis of trade union wage bargaining is combined with models of vertically connected oligopolies. The following questions are analyzed: - How does the institutional setting of the wage bargaining process influence the outcome in the product market? Does the product price depend on the level where the bargaining takes place (at the firm level, at the sector level or at the industry level)? - Does wage bargaining influence the industrial structure? Does the firms' incentive for vertical integration change with the institutional setting of the wage bargaining? - Does the institutional setting of the wage bargaining influence the firms' incentive to use franchising contracts? As a result the specification of the institutional setting of the wage bargaining matters. Therefore the bargaining power of the unions should be an additional factor in the field of IO.

Book Unions in Oligopolistic Vertically Connected Industries

Download or read book Unions in Oligopolistic Vertically Connected Industries written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model of two unionized, vertically connected oligopolistic industries is analyzed. Economic performance, measured by consumer prices, depends on the institutional setting of wage bargaining. Two externalities may occur, namely an integration and a competition externality, which have contrary effects. With decentralized bargaining no externalities can be internalized resulting in low consumer prices. With bargaining at the industry level only the competition externality is internalized resulting in high prices. With centralized bargaining both externalities can be internalized resulting again in low prices. With at least two firms in each industry, the decentralized setting performs best. Performance improves with an increase in the competition of the product markets. (author's abstract).

Book The Vertical Mosaic

Download or read book The Vertical Mosaic written by John Porter and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Porter’s landmark study of social and ethnic inequality, The Vertical Mosaic, became an instant classic when it was first published in 1965. A national best seller that sold more than 100,000 copies, the book was the first major study of Canada’s class structure and one of the foundational texts in Canadian sociology. Sociologist Irving Louis Horowitz described it as “the sociological study of present-day Canada.” Fifty years later, the book retains vast significance both for its powerful critique of social exclusivity in a country that prides itself on equality and diversity and for its influence on generations of sociological researchers. The 50th Anniversary Edition features new material which contextualizes the legacy of this important book: a foreword by Porter’s colleague, Wallace Clement, and his biographer, Rick Helmes-Hayes, and a new introductory essay by historian Jack Jedwab and sociologist Vic Satzewich.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market Evolution: Competition and Cooperation is a selection of papers presented at the recent meeting of the European Association of Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE). The volume brings together twenty high-quality papers reflecting frontier research in modern industrial organization. The contributions cover a broad spectrum of increasing theoretical, empirical and policy issues, including analyses of the nature of the firm, product differentiation, research and development, strategic alliances, information sharing in the banking sector, exchange rate pass-through in international competition, labor unionization and product rivalry, buyer-supplier bargaining, multimarket competition and related entry, entry and exit processes, multinational enterprises in the Third World, European integration and the restructuring of Eastern Europe. From a theoretical perspective, many chapters apply game theory to the analysis of firm behaviors and market competition. Moreover, a large number of the studies contain a significant empirical part, mainly by employing econometric techniques, to test the hypotheses derived from modern industrial organization theories. Data from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the European Union are presented and analyzed.

Book Extractive Imperialism in the Americas

Download or read book Extractive Imperialism in the Americas written by James Petras and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent changes in the global economy, which include a growing demand for energy and natural resources such as industrial minerals and agro-food products, have brought about a massive devastating pillage of resources in the developing world by multinational corporations as well as states with energy and food security concerns—and concerns about a system (global capitalism) in the throes of a global crisis. These developments have also brought about a major change in the form taken by imperialism (actions taken by the state to advance the interests of the dominant capitalist class). This book explores the changing face of US imperialism in the regional context of the Americas, a major stage in the unfolding drama of a system in crisis.

Book Industrial Organization in the European Union

Download or read book Industrial Organization in the European Union written by Stephen Davies and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills an important gap in our knowledge of the organization of EU manufacturing industry. At the empirical level, it draws on a newly constructed micro-level database (the European market share matrix) to present the first ever comprehensive picture of the concentration, integration, multinationality, and diversification of EU industry and firms. However, its purpose is not primarily descriptive. At the theoretical level, it develops a new way of integrating the insights of international trade, industrial organization, international business, and corporate strategy. A central thesis is that by understanding the reasons for the industrial structure we observe, much can be understood about the underlying competitive process that generated this structure in the context of current European integration. In this, RandD, advertising, and government intervention each play important and pervasive roles. The insights from an econometric analysis of the various dimensions of industrial structure are applied to address policy-relevant questions such as: is the industrial organization of the member states integrated at the EU level? Are diversification and multinationality random, or do they follow an industrial logic? Which industries and firms pose the most serious potential problems for competition policy? How do the largest EU firms achieve their size? Do certain member states dominate the ownership or location of production?

Book Strategic Delegation in Firms and in the Trade Union

Download or read book Strategic Delegation in Firms and in the Trade Union written by Guido S. Merzoni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic delegation is a widespread phenomenon in economic and social systems. In many situations the main interested party benefits from appointing a delegate to take action that the principal - were he playing - could not credibly take. This book contributes to the literature studying such a phenomenon, by extending the analysis of its implications for firms' strategy in product markets, by investigating how it may affect the trade union's activity, by studying its dynamic influence on the evolution of strategic interactions that the delegating party is involved in. The welfare effects of strategic delegation turn out to be uncertain and crucially depend on the features of the situation considered, both in static and in dynamic frameworks.
