Attention is also given to the various derivatives of the traction engine the humble portable, the well-known steam roller, the steam tractor, majestic road locomotive, ploughing engine and, last but not least, the King of the Road, the glorious and glittering showman's engine. The informative text is accompanied by illustrations that show something of the age in which traction engines worked and of the age when they became treasured historic relics. Book excerpt: Traction engines developed in the mid 1860s and were usually dirty, noisy and somewhat crude to handle. They were driven initially by men who were perhaps not very skilled in handling them but these men were not just drivers ndash; they developed the task into an art. This book brings together much information about these engines, from the earliest to the latest. Attention is also given to the various derivatives of the traction engine ndash; the humble portable, the well-known steam roller, the little steam tractor, majestic road locomotives and ploughing engines and, not least, the King of the Road, the glorious and glittering showman's engine. About the author Derek Rayner first drove a traction engine in 1963. He and two friends purchased a 1915 Aveling & Porter steam roller in 1964 and he has been its sole owner since 1968. Mr Rayner is president of the Leeds & District Traction Engine Club and is assistant editor of Steaming, the magazine of the National Traction Engine Trust. Book Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive

Download or read book Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive written by J. Parker Lamb and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive documents the role played by mechanical engineers in the development of locomotive design. The steam engine and the mechanical engineering profession both grew directly out of the Industrial Revolution's need for sources of power beyond that of men and animals. Invented in England when coal mining was being developed, the practical steam engine eventually found numerous applications in transportation, especially in railroad technology. J. Parker Lamb traces the evolution of the steam engine from the early 1700s through the early 1800s, when the first locomotives were sent to the United States from England. Lamb then shifts the scene to the development of the American steam locomotive, first by numerous small builders, and later, by the early 20th century, by only three major enterprises and a handful of railroad company shops. Lamb reviews the steady progress of steam locomotive technology through its pinnacle during the 1930s, then discusses the reasons for its subsequent decline.

Download or read book American Steam Locomotives written by William L. Withuhn and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly half of the nation's history, the steam locomotive was the outstanding symbol for progress and power. It was the literal engine of the Industrial Revolution, and it played an instrumental role in putting the United States on the world stage. While the steam locomotive's basic principle of operation is simple, designers and engineers honed these concepts into 100-mph passenger trains and 600-ton behemoths capable of hauling mile-long freight at incredible speeds. American Steam Locomotives is a thorough and engaging history of the invention that captured public imagination like no other, and the people who brought it to life.
