Download or read book Marriage in the Western Church written by Philip Lyndon Reynolds and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage in the Western Church examines how marriage acquired a specifically Christian identity in the Western Church from the patristic through Carolingian periods. It shows how theologians came to regard marriage as an ecclesiastical institution and how they developed a Christian theology of marriage. The first part of the book deals with marriage and divorce in Roman and Germanic law. Other parts deal with marriage and divorce in ecclesiastical law, with the Latin Fathers' distinction between the divine and human laws of marriage, and with the customary stages by which persons became married. Several chapters are devoted to Augustine's views on marriage and sexuality. The author shows how the doctrine of indissolubility became the West's chief means of christianizing marriage, and how theologians found here their preferred arguments for affirming the holiness and the 'sacramentality' of marriage. The author argues that the Western regime of indissolubility was the product of a fourth century reform movement. This publication has also been published in paperback, please click here for details.

Download or read book The Essential Definition of Marriage According to the 1917 and 1983 Codes of Canon Law written by Charles J. Scicluna and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scicluna presents a detailed and well-documented study of the way Roman Catholic canonical tradition, especially in the last 150 years, has tackled the challenge of providing a juridical definition of marriage. Three main sources are consistently analyzed: the documents of the magisterium; the jurisprudence of the Apostolic Tribunals of the Catholic church; and the works of experts in canon law. Two important canonical legal texts, the 1917 and 1983 Codes of Canon Law, are taken as essential points of reference which gives chronological structure to the work. The book not only describes developments in a technical and scientific manner but also provides material for further discussion on the meaning and interpretation of phrases like 'the essential obligations of marriage' and 'the essential elements of marriage.'

Download or read book Constitutions Decrees Declarations written by Austin Flannery and published by . This book was released on 1996-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen official documents--constitutions, decrees, and declarations--of the Second Vatican Council are now available from Liturgical Press in the most popular and widely used inclusive-language edition translated by Irish Dominican Austin Flannery (+October 21, 2008). As the worldwide Church continues to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Council (1962-65), there is a great need in college classrooms and parish faith formation groups--as well as for individuals--to again have access to these documents in contemporary English. As Flannery wrote in his introduction to the 1996 edition, "The translation of the texts of the Vatican documents in the present volume differs from that in the previous publication in two respects. It has been very considerably revised and, in place, corrected. It is also, to a very large extent, in inclusive language. "I say 'to a very large extent, ' because we have used inclusive language in passages about men and women but not, however, in passages about God, except where the use of the masculine pronoun was easily avoidable."
