Book Environmental Geochemistry and Health

Download or read book Environmental Geochemistry and Health written by S.H. Bowie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main outcomes of the eleven meetings of the Working Party was the recognition of the importance of interdisciplinary studies linking regional geochemistry with plant, animal and human health. The effects of major element deficiencies or excesses on plant health are well known; this is not the case for trace elements. In fact, rapid and reliable analytical methods for determining trace element abundances have only recently become available, and it is to be expected that important new information on trace element levels will be forthcoming. This, however, is only part of the problem because other factors such as element speciation, uptake and transmission may be more significant than total concentration. The pathways of elements from crops to animals are relatively well defined, but the aetiology of diseases attributable to elemental inadequacies or excesses is generally quite complex. Nevertheless, there is good evidence for diseases in livestock in the British Isles induced by deficiencies of Cu, Se and Co and Mo excess. On a world scale there is also convincing data on the effect of Na, P and I deficiencies and F excess on animal health. What is generally lacking, however, is adequate interaction between geochemists and biochemists, veterinary scientists and other concerned with animal health. Interpretation of geochemical data is complex as are connections between elemental abundances and the health of animals.

This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an excellent compilation of trace elements and their positive and negative effects on human health and the environment. Over two sections, the book examines the adverse effects of trace elements in the human body and the atmosphere and how to overcome them.

Book Trace Elements and Minerals in Health and Longevity

Download or read book Trace Elements and Minerals in Health and Longevity written by Marco Malavolta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the role of trace elements in health and longevity, pursuing a biogerontological approach. It offers essential information on the impact of trace elements on molecular and physiological processes of aging, and on their impact on health in connection with aging. The major topics covered in its 11 chapters, each dedicated to a specific trace element or mineral, are: a) Role of the element in species longevity, b) Recommended intake for longevity in animal species and in the elderly, c) Deficiency and age-related disease, d) Excess/toxicity and age-related disease, and e) Interactions with drugs prescribed in the elderly. Clinical, animal and other laboratory models of interest in aging are included, which enable a more in-depth analysis to be made. The respective chapters are a mixture of overviews and more in-depth reviews in which the mechanisms of aging are described from the point of view of their specific interactions with trace elements and minerals.

Book Distribution of Trace Elements Related to the Occurrence of Certain Cancers Cardiovascular Diseases and Urolithiasis

Download or read book Distribution of Trace Elements Related to the Occurrence of Certain Cancers Cardiovascular Diseases and Urolithiasis written by U.S. National Committee for Geochemistry. Subcommittee on the Geochemical Environment in Relation to Health and Disease and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: An attempt is made to identify relationships between the geochemical environment and certain diseases: cancer, cardiovascular disease and urolithiasis. The sources of trace elements and simple inorganic compounds are discussed, as well as radioactive elements. Water quality and soil types are analyzed and related to plant foods and the bioavailability of trace elements. There are plants that accumulate certain elements, such as selenium, fluorine and zinc. Phytates are an example of the interaction of substances within plants. The effects on food of processing, sewage--recycling and coal fly ash are considered. Data and maps show the links of environmental factors to the diseases.
