Book Torn Trousers A True Story of Courage and Adventure How A Couple Sacrificed Everything To Escape to Paradise

Download or read book Torn Trousers A True Story of Courage and Adventure How A Couple Sacrificed Everything To Escape to Paradise written by Andrew St Pierre White and published by 4xOverland. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What could possibly go wrong in paradise? Tired of mortgage payments, thirty-something Andrew and Gwynn sold nearly everything they owned but their Siamese cat and escaped their humdrum nine-to-five existence for life in paradise—a tiny island in one of the remotest spots on Earth: the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Woefully inexperienced, they took control of a luxury game lodge that catered to the likes of French aristocrats, Hollywood directors, Mafia lawyers, and the captain of the England cricket team. Not forgetting the hippos who liked to crash cocktail hour. Trouble soon followed as the reality of running a hotel on an island accessible only by boat or plane burst upon them. Andrew and Gwynn learned it's one thing for guests to wake up with gentle giraffes outside their windows, but it's quite another to keep them safe from poisonous snakes, temperamental elephants, and a hyena with a taste for plastic. All that was child's play compared to figuring out how to feed their guests when a 'quick run' to the grocery store required a plane, a bush pilot, and moderate risk to life, limb, and property. By turns funny, touching, and suspenseful, Torn Trousers is a real modern fairytale about getting exactly what you wished for…and then having to live with it. Scroll up and buy to escape to Africa today!

Download or read book Truck written by DK and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lavishly illustrated celebration of trucks and trucking, from the first motorized wagons to the advent of electric, driverless freight vehicles. Charting decade after decade of innovation and change, The Truck Book is a beautifully illustrated history of trucks, trucking culture, and the romance of the open road. Trucks, semis, and vans share their origins in the steam wagons of the 1800s and the invention of the modern combustion engine in the 1870s. As steam power gave way to gas and diesel engines, trucks evolved and diversified according to their desired purpose - becoming everything from panel vans and pickup trucks to heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), or construction trucks, such as log carriers or concrete transporters. Military forces worldwide soon realized the value in these vehicles, and so they played a defining role in the wars of the 20th century. In the meantime, they have also saved lives as ambulances and fire trucks and entertained the masses in the form of monster trucks. The Truck Book showcases the most important and iconic makes and models of every era - from the Ford TT to the Bedford TM Turbo 92 Series, to the Toyota Hilux. Along the way, it evokes the freedom and nostalgia of the open road, explores trucking culture, and shows how trucks and trucking companies, such as Mack and UPS, have won a place in fans' hearts. Weaving together stunning photographic catalogs with specially commissioned "visual tours," feature spreads on truck models, designers, and manufacturers, as well as on milestone events or technological developments over the last 200 years, The Truck Book is the most comprehensive and best-illustrated title available on the subject.

Book Do Not Take this Road to El Karama

Download or read book Do Not Take this Road to El Karama written by Chris Harvie and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2011-04-08 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tired of tragic stories, Chris Harvie sets out to see the positive side of the ‘Dark Continent’ and to enjoy its life and laughter. Do Not Take This Road to El-Karama is the entertaining account of an epic road trip that takes him from his home outside the Kruger National Park to the banks of the Nile in Uganda – and back again. In his haphazard and somewhat eccentric travels, Harvie encounters missionaries and mechanics, locals and ex-pats, rascals and rogues. Delving into his own mixed British and South African identity, he tries to fathom – in his trademark witty and sardonic style – the post-independence national character of the southern, central, and east African countries through which he and his companions pass. Delightfully opinionated, brimming with interesting facts, questionable comment and dubious speculations, this book is essential reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in Africa, travel, history and people; in a good read; or simply in being alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of life on Earth is dominated by extinction events so numerous that over 99.9% of the species ever to have existed are gone forever. If animals could talk, we would ask them to recall their own ancestries, in particular the secrets as to how they avoided almost inevitable annihilation in the face of daily assaults by predators, climactic cataclysms, deadly infections and innate diseases. In Tears of the Cheetah, medical geneticist and conservationist Stephen J. O'Brien narrates fast-moving science adventure stories that explore the mysteries of survival among the earth's most endangered and beloved wildlife. Here we uncover the secret histories of exotic species such as Indonesian orangutans, humpback whales, and the imperiled cheetah-the world's fastest animal which nonetheless cannot escape its own genetic weaknesses. Among these genetic detective stories we also discover how the Serengeti lions have lived with FIV (the feline version of HIV), where giant pandas really come from, how bold genetic action pulled the Florida panther from the edge of extinction, how the survivors of the medieval Black Death passed on a genetic gift to their descendents, and how mapping the genome of the domestic cat solved a murder case in Canada. With each riveting account of animal resilience and adaptation, a remarkable parallel in human medicine is drawn, adding yet another rationale for species conservation-mining their genomes for cures to our own fatal diseases. Tears of the Cheetah offers a fascinating glimpse of the insight gained when geneticists venutre into the wild.

Book excerpt: This e-book details the most interesting and important characteristics of the automobiles, car maintenance, styling features, car body style, the standard classification of the cars, an history of the automobiles, introduction in the automotive industry, and the traffic code, rules and signs. An automobile, usually called a car (an old word for carriage) or a truck, is a wheeled vehicle that carries its own engine. Older terms include horseless carriage and motor car, with “motor” referring to what is now usually called the engine. It has seats for the driver and, almost without exception, for at least one passenger. The automobile was hailed as an environmental improvement over horses when it was first introduced. Before its introduction, in New York City, over 10,000 tons of manure had to be removed from the streets daily. However, in 2006 the automobile is one of the primary sources of worldwide air pollution and cause of substantial noise and health effects.
