Book Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBs Mammalian and Environmental Toxicology

Download or read book Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBs Mammalian and Environmental Toxicology written by Stephen Safe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been produced commercially since be fore 1930. They proved to be highly versatile mixtures and their uses continued to expand during the early 1970's even after the unanticipated world-wide en vironmental contamination had been discovered (Jensen et aI. , 1969; Koeman et aI. , 1969). Over 600,000 metric-tons were produced and/or used in the U. S. during this time and it is estimated that worldwide production totaled about 1,200,000 metric-tons (Table 1). With low acute toxicities (Fishbein, 1974), these mixtures were considered gen erally biologically inactive even though industrial exposure had demonstrated he patic and dermatological effects (Fishbein, 1974; Hansen, 1987). Thus, use and disposal were not carefully monitored and it is estimated that one-third of the world-wide production of PCBs has been released into the global environment (Table 1). Table 1. Estimated production and disposition of PCBs b U. s. a Worldwide 6 6 Production/use 610 X 10 kg 1200 X 10 kg Mobil environmental reservoir 82 400 Static reservoirs In service 340 Dumps 130 Total static 470 800 a NAS, 1979 b Tatsukawa and Tanaba, 1984 2 Environmental Distribution Many countries now impose strict controls on the use and release of PCBs. Re lease into the environment has declined dramatically in the last decade, but con tinued release from reservoirs (Table 1) into burdened ecosystems (Table 2) ap pears inevitable for several more decades (Barros et aI. , 1984).

Book Toxicology of Marine Mammals

Download or read book Toxicology of Marine Mammals written by Joseph G. Vos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-12-05 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The activities of modern society have unleashed a range of toxic chemicals into the global environment. Many of these toxicants are now being detected in increasing quantities in the tissues of marine mammals, most notably in top predators who acquire relatively large amounts of toxic chemicals by ingesting contaminated prey. Book Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBs

Download or read book Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBs written by Stephen Safe and published by . This book was released on 1987-09-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern about environmental toxins is ever increasing, as is the need for sound scientific information. The "Environmental Toxin Series" is dedicated to the publication of comprehensive reviews and monographs on compounds or classes of chemicals which are of importance in environmental toxicology. The series is designed to serve as a background of information for scientific investigation as well as risk analysis and political decision making. The main aim of the series is to describe in as complete a way as possible all potentially hazardous chemicals from the point of view of chemistry, ecology, toxicology, risk analysis and regulatory implications. From time to time conference proceedings on important and urgent topics will be included in the series. We thank the members of the editorial board for their enthusiastic support.

Book Pilot Assessment of Status and Trends of Persistent Chemicals in Marine Mammals

Download or read book Pilot Assessment of Status and Trends of Persistent Chemicals in Marine Mammals written by Mariana Pinzone and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are present in marine mammals living in all five OSPAR Regions. Toothed‐cetaceans and some subpopulations of pinnipeds present moderate to high ranges of PCB concentrations, often surpassing the estimated toxicity thresholds for the onset of reproductive incapacity. The ranges of PCB concentrations of baleen whales are always below the estimated toxicity thresholds.

Book Polychlorinated Biphenyls

Download or read book Polychlorinated Biphenyls written by Obaid Faroon and published by WHO. This book was released on 2003 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds, produced commercially since 1929 for use in a variety of products including plastics and adhesives, surface coatings, inks, flame retardants, pesticides and paints. PCBs are environmentally persistent, and accumulate in the food chain. They are designated by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants as persistent pollutants, and many countries have severely restricted or banned the production of PCBs. This report evaluates the effects of PCBs on human health, caused due to exposure by inhaling contaminated air or ingesting contaminated food and water.

Book excerpt: Marine Ecotoxicology: Current Knowledge and Future Issues is the first unified resource to cover issues related to contamination, responses, and testing techniques of saltwater from a toxicological perspective. With its unprecedented focus on marine environments and logical chapter progression, this book is useful to graduate students, ecotoxicologists, risk assessors, and regulators involved or interested in marine waters. As human interaction with these environments increases, understanding of the pollutants and toxins introduced into the oceans becomes ever more critical, and this book builds a foundation of knowledge to assist scientists in studying, monitoring, and making decisions that affect both marine environments and human health. A team of world renowned experts provide detailed analyses of the most common contaminants in marine environments and explain the design and purpose of toxicity testing methods, while exploring the future of ecotoxicology studies in relation to the world's oceans. As the threat of increasing pollution in marine environments becomes an ever more tangible reality, Marine Ecotoxicology offers insights and guidance to mitigate that threat. - Provides practical tools and methods for assessing and monitoring the accumulation and effects of contaminants in marine environments - Unites world renowned experts in marine ecotoxicology to deliver thorough and diverse perspectives - Builds the foundation required for risk assessors and regulators to adequately assess and monitor the impact of pollution in marine environments - Offers helpful insights and guidance to graduate students, ecotoxicologists, risk assessors, and regulators interested in mitigating threats to marine waters
