Book Tissue Phenomics Profiling Cancer Patients for Treatment Decisions

Download or read book Tissue Phenomics Profiling Cancer Patients for Treatment Decisions written by Gerd Binnig and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of digitization our society is transformed into a new state. In particular, machine intelligence dramatically elevates our capability to create and digest information. Naturally, healthcare is also impacted by this trend and will even be more transformed into a informatic driven discipline in the future. In the most important area of histo-pathology, the interpretation of tissue slices from cancer patients, informatics will have an early and huge impact on treatment decisions and probably will act as the leading discipline for this transformation in medicine. Tissue Phenomics provides a comprehensive methodology aiming at the discovery of the most accurate tissue-based decision support algorithm by close integration of assay development, image analysis and bioinformatics, and optimization feedback loops. In this book the methodology of Tissue Phenomics and its benefits and wealth’s are described. The different components of Tissue Phenomics are explained in the different chapters. In the chapters 2 to 4 of this book different authors describe various approaches on how to convert the wealth of tissue slide pixel data into mineable information using knowledge-based and data-driven image analysis methods. Subsequently, the datafication of images and the bioinformatics part plays a crucial role in generating prognostic and predictive models for disease progression. The integration of other data sources such as genomics, radiomics and patient related information is also important and is described as well. As discussed in chapters 5 and 6, these models may classify patients in distinct groups such as those responding to a given therapy. Since Tissue Phenomics provides a huge set of potentially prognostic features (phenes), one focus of both chapters is robust feature selection methods by advanced Monte-Carlo cross validation algorithms. In chapter 7 we discuss multiple application examples of Tissue Phenomics in academic and commercial settings and its tremendous impact to advances in biomedical sciences. Building on the successes in research, chapters 8 and 9 discuss applications in clinical environments and provide a flavor to the future envision in chapter 10, where tissue datafication and subsequent patient profiling is part of every routine examination, with the goal to best match patients with the most successful therapy, as predicted by tissue phenes.

Download or read book Mesh Methods written by Viktor A. Rukavishnikov and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical models of various natural processes are described by differential equations, systems of partial differential equations and integral equations. In most cases, the exact solution to such problems cannot be determined; therefore, one has to use grid methods to calculate an approximate solution using high-performance computing systems. These methods include the finite element method, the finite difference method, the finite volume method and combined methods. In this Special Issue, we bring to your attention works on theoretical studies of grid methods for approximation, stability and convergence, as well as the results of numerical experiments confirming the effectiveness of the developed methods. Of particular interest are new methods for solving boundary value problems with singularities, the complex geometry of the domain boundary and nonlinear equations. A part of the articles is devoted to the analysis of numerical methods developed for calculating mathematical models in various fields of applied science and engineering applications. As a rule, the ideas of symmetry are present in the design schemes and make the process harmonious and efficient.

Download or read book Hepatocellular Carcinoma written by Toshiro Nakashima and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common fatal malignan cies of mankind. Up to a few decades ago it was looked upon as a cancer which aroused mainly academic concern but relatively little clinical interest, because its therapy and prognosis had a most un favorable outlook. Indeed, it was mostly recognized only at autopsy. Recently this pessimism has radically changed and is disappearing to a rapidly accelerating degree. Many of the scientific contributions at this change in outlook are the result of research in the Far East, first, Japan and then gradually extending to its neighbors. The introduction of experimental hepatocarcinogens by Yoshida more than 50 years ago may have been one of the first important steps. Hepatocellular car cinoma shows a characteristic geographical distribution. With the highest incidence in China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, followed by southern and eastern Europe, while generally the incidence is rather low in western and northern Europe and North and South America.

Book Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Download or read book Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells written by Mitchell Khan and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Chapter 1, the COVID-19 pandemic and the damage mechanisms on the cellular level which can be ameliorated with the cellular therapies is thoroughly evaluated. Previous and ongoing stem cell clinical trial data from diseases with similar symptoms is gathered. All this accumulated data and current clinical trial results indicate that the cellular therapies could be the most effective treatment option for COVID-19 patients to ameliorate the damaged tissues and save lives. In Chapter 2, the authors examine activated mesenchymal stem cells for stroke repair. Stem Cell treatment has shown recovery in animal models of stroke, indicating an improved regenerative and repair potential. Though stem cells are still being used in clinical trials, there is no evidence that they enhance recovery in ischemic stroke patients. Nevertheless, the multipotent mesenchymal stem has widely been explored for stroke recovery. An'Activated MSC' as a therapeutic alternative to tackling ischemic stroke is proposed, thereby the activation of MSCs by cytokines, growth factors, hypoxia, pharmacological drugs, etc., could be a novel approach to improving stroke patients' responses to receiving MSCs. In Chapter 3, the potential benefits of in vitro culture of therapeutic stem cells in the presence of HB along with the ketogenic diet, whereby higher physiological concentrations of ketone bodies can be achieved in vivo, as an adjuvant to stem cell transplantation is assessed"--

Book Regulatory microRNA

  • ISBN : 3038977683
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Regulatory microRNA written by Y-h. Taguchi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes updated information about microRNA regulation, for example, in the fields of circular RNAs, multiomics analysis, biomarkers and oncogenes. The variety of topics included in this book reaffirms the extent to which microRNA regulation affects biological processes. Although microRNAs are not translated to proteins, their importance for biological processes is not less than proteins. An understanding of their roles in various biological processes is critical to understanding gene function in these biological processes. Although non-coding RNAs other than microRNAs have recently come under investigation, microRNA still remains the front runner as the subject of genetic and biological studies. In reading the collection of papers, readers can grasp the most updated information regarding microRNA regulation, which will continue to be an important topic in genetics and biology.

Book Tumor Invasion and Metastasis

Download or read book Tumor Invasion and Metastasis written by L.A. Liotta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clinical significance of tumor spread has always been appreciated. Yet, in spite of the pioneering work and outstanding contributions of investigators such as D. Coman, H. Green, B. Fisher, S. Wood and I. Zeidman, studies on metastasis rarely achieved the popularity afforded to more esoteric areas of tumor biology. Tumor dissemination, occurring as it does in a responding host and being composed of a series of dynamic int~ractions, is a highly complex phenomenon. Few investigators were brave enough to attempt to unravel the mechanisms involved. Paradoxically, this very complexity may have contributed, in part, to the recent upsurge of interest in metastasis research. More and more researchers are becoming fascinated by the complexities of the cellular interactions involved in tumor spread. Accompanying this intellectual stimulation have been technological advances in related fields which allow the derivation of new model systems. The mechanisms of metastatic spread are increasingly amenable to both the reductionist and holistic approaches and it is the purpose of this volume to present many of these model systems while emphasizing the intricacy and complexity of the processes they mimic. We have attempted to emphasize two topics not previously covered in depth in previous books on metastases. These are in vitro models of invasion and in teractions of tumor cells with connective tissue.
