Book excerpt: Structural Adjustment: Theory, Practice and Impacts examines the problems associated with Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) and reveals the damaging impacts they can have. The book looks at how the debt crisis of the 1970's forced developing countries to seek external help and then reviews what constitutes as a standard adjustment programme, detailing the political, economic, social and environmental impacts of SAPs. The final section draws together theories and political responses and presents a case for alternatives to the programmes.

Download or read book Failure to Adjust written by Edward Alden and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Updated edition with a new foreword on the Trump administration's trade policy* The vast benefits promised by the supporters of globalization, and by their own government, have never materialized for many Americans. In Failure to Adjust Edward Alden provides a compelling history of the last four decades of US economic and trade policies that have left too many Americans unable to adapt to or compete in the current global marketplace. He tells the story of what went wrong and how to correct the course. Originally published on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Alden’s book captured the zeitgeist that would propel Donald J. Trump to the presidency. In a new introduction to the paperback edition, Alden addresses the economic challenges now facing the Trump administration, and warns that economic disruption will continue to be among the most pressing issues facing the United States. If the failure to adjust continues, Alden predicts, the political disruptions of the future will be larger still.
Download or read book The Art of Observing and Adjusting written by Vayu Jung Doohwa and published by Lotus Pub.. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for yoga practitioners of all levels. It begins with the "know-how" and fundamentals of postural imbalances and guides the reader through the observation and adjustment of these imbalances, on the basis of the postural type of the practitioner. The book avoids complex anatomical references and opts instead to use over 250 simple color diagrams and images, which make it easier to convey the ideas more clearly, and are simple for teachers and practitioners to follow during self-experimentation. Just as a doctor would prescribe the most relevant treatment after a thorough examination and diagnosis, the teacher will be able to recognize unbalanced postural patterns through observation, and "prescribe" the most appropriate alignments or adjustments. Understanding postural types will guide the teacher toward the correct adjustments in order to restore balance to the practitioner's body. In Part 1 of this book, the author explains how to observe imbalances. In Part 2, the reader will learn postural types systemically according to section imbalance patterns. In Part 3, the author recommends specific ways and principles of adjustment for the different postural types. Vayu Jung Doohwa started teaching traditional Mysore-style Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga classes in his hometown of Busan in 2007, and he established the Yoga VnA studio in 2010. Since then he has been working on the contemporary scientific interpretations of the traditional Ashtanga yoga.
Download or read book Adjustment After Migration written by J. Ex and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are not so firmly rooted as they used to be. The greater frequency, at least in the Western world, with which people move house can be seen from the statistics. Many migrate voluntarily, or under compulsion, to build up new existences in other parts of the country or in other parts of the world. The problems which face people who are obliged to settle elsewhere have become matters of national and international political importance. Of recent years they have also become the subjects of sociological and socio-psychological research. The psychological research of which this book gives an account took place among families who some years ago emigrated from what was then known as the Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands. Dutch is the language spoken from their youth. Born and bred in another part of the world they embarked in groups to the N ether lands, which they had never seen before, when the country they lived in became independent. No doubt they had a vivid image of the Netherlands. It was the Mother country; they had heard a great deal about it in the course of the simple education they had received. They were acquainted with it through pictures and through the contact, however superficial, with representatives of the ruling country. The military service which had played such an important part in the lives of the male adults had made them feel bound up with the country of the House of Orange.

Download or read book Managing Performance Abroad written by Arno Haslberger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a global economy full of multinational firms, international human resource management (including expatriation, career management, and talent management) is a growing topic in the business and management literature and in universities. A thorough understanding of the adjustment of expatriates to their new environment is critical not only for selection and preparation of potential expatriates, but also for the management of expatriate performance. Managed well, expatriates can be key contributors to organizational success while abroad and even after repatriation. Poor understanding and management of expatriate issues, on the other hand, may lead to underperformance and increased turnover of expatriates and repatriates. Managing Performance Abroad summarizes and extends what is known about the topic of expatriate management and adjustment, covering all the major authors and presenting a new approach to the adjustment process. At present, expatriate adjustment is only covered as a chapter in books on international HRM and HRD. Much of this literature relies on outdated concepts and evidence. Furthermore, most business research and management publications use an expatriate adjustment model that was originally published about two decades ago. This book is the first dedicated solely to the subject of expatriate adjustment, enabling readers to formulate research questions and hypotheses and to develop expatriation policies and support systems that optimize the performance of expatriates. It presents a re-formulation of the model underlying management research about expatriate adjustment, providing guidance for researchers and practitioners alike.

Download or read book Handbook of Eudaimonic Well Being written by Joar Vittersø and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents the most comprehensive account of eudaimonic well-being to date. It brings together theoretical insights and empirical updates presented by leading scholars and young researchers. The handbook examines philosophical and historical approaches to the study of happy lives and good societies, and it critically looks at conceptual controversies related to eudaimonia and well-being. It identifies the elements of happiness in a variety of areas such as emotions, health, wisdom, self-determination, internal motivation, personal growth, genetics, work, leisure, heroism, and many more. It then places eudaimonic well-being in the larger context of society, addressing social elements. The most remarkable outcome of the book is arguably its large-scale relevance, reminding us that the more we know about the good way of living, the more we are in a position to build a society that can be supportive and offer opportunities for such a way of living for all of its citizens.
