Book Cambodian Evangelicalism

Download or read book Cambodian Evangelicalism written by Briana L. Wong and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambodian Civil War and genocide of the late 1960s and ’70s left the country and its diaspora with long-lasting trauma that continues to reverberate through the community. In this book, Briana L. Wong explores the compelling stories of Cambodian evangelicals, their process of conversion, and how their testimonials to the Christian faith helped them to make sense of and find purpose in their trauma. Based on ethnographic fieldwork with Cambodian communities in the metropolitan areas of Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Paris, and Phnom Penh, Wong examines questions of religious identity and the search for meaning within the context of transnational Cambodian evangelicalism. While the community has grown in recent decades, Christians nevertheless make up a small minority of the predominantly Buddhist diaspora. Wong explores what it is about Christianity that makes these converts willing to risk their social standing, familial bonds, and, in certain cases, physical safety in order to identify with the faith. Contributing to ongoing dialogues on conversion, reverse mission, and multiple religious belonging, this book will appeal to students and scholars of world Christianity, missiology, and the history of Christianity, as well as Southeast Asian studies, secular sociologies, and anthropologists operating within the field of religious studies.

Book Experiencing the Gospel

Download or read book Experiencing the Gospel written by Thomas W. Seckler and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, increasing numbers of people from Muslim backgrounds have become followers of Jesus. Some of these conversions have occurred in Cambodia. Based on a phenomenological approach, forty semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted of Cambodian believers in Christ from a Muslim Background (BMBs). This study analyzed the narratives and reflections of BMBs and focused on (1) examining the role of contextual adjustments made by cross-cultural workers and Cambodian BMBs to make the Christian message more understandable and compelling, (2) identifying core themes or factors that converts report as central in their own conversions, and (3) exploring and analyzing the ways in which the message itself was experienced as personally meaningful and appealing. The research discovered that the Christian message was contextualized in various ways, including the choice of language, the use of experience-near terms and concepts, and communication within the framework of understanding of the listener. Contextualized materials were developed and were used by both cross-cultural workers and BMBs in communicating the Christian message to others. Respondents reported several themes or factors as important to their decision to follow Jesus, with individuals typically revealing more than one theme as significant in their conversion. Four primary themes, repeatedly referred to, were identified: sin and cleansing, heaven and judgment, Jesus (delineated into Jesus is, Jesus did, and Jesus does), and the Bible. Four secondary themes were described: the witness of others, dreams, love, and the sense of God0́9s leading. Many respondents used language which described God and his message as being near and personal. The message itself was experienced as personally relevant and meaningful in three primary ways. First and foremost for the Cambodian respondents, the content of the message was meaningful. Second, God0́9s perceived actions were meaningful, and third, the method of communication was meaningful. This research suggests that the contextualization of the message did impact both its understandability, its relevance, and its desirability. In addition, the content of the religious message itself, including its explanation about self, the world, and implications for belief, was a primary factor impacting the decision to believe in and follow Jesus.

Book Exploring a Contextualized Leadership Development Model Built on Spiritual Formation for Emerging Christian Leaders in Urban Cambodia

Download or read book Exploring a Contextualized Leadership Development Model Built on Spiritual Formation for Emerging Christian Leaders in Urban Cambodia written by Gil Sung Suh and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the processes of leadership development in Cambodia among emerging Christian leaders in urban settings. Field research was done to identify the characteristics of these young leaders and the critical factors that influence their leadership formation. The purpose of this ethnographic study is to explore how to develop a contextualized model for the formation of emerging leaders in Cambodia. Although Cambodian culture has been deeply shaped by animistic Buddhism and its recent tragic history, the current context of Cambodian society is rapidly changing and becoming increasingly complex with impacts of globalization and urbanization. All these traditional and contemporary cultural forces significantly contribute to the shaping and formation of emerging Cambodian leaders. And these contextual factors must be taken seriously for any leadership development effort for Cambodian leaders. Emerging Cambodian leaders are well aware of the external challenges facing their society and church and deeply desire to lead a unified engagement of Christians. But these young leaders are mostly new and inexperienced in their leadership positions, and they are under a lot of pressure as leaders without many supporting systems. They are vulnerable to temptations and threats that could lead to burnout and dropout of ministry engagement. They need to secure their connection to God and to each other in order to develop spiritual leadership for missional engagement according to their divine calling. The research demonstrates the compelling need for a contextualized leadership development model for emerging Cambodian leaders who are in need of supporting systems with spiritual formation component for their ongoing leadership development. It includes a change strategy with the results of pilot projects that confirm the need and the effectiveness of such a model.

Book Appropriate Christianity

Download or read book Appropriate Christianity written by Charles H. Kraft and published by William Carey Library. This book was released on 2005 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appropriate Christianity consists of 28 chapters by 18 authors approaching contextualization in three dimensions: truth, allegiance and spiritual power. Over the years, there have been quite a number of helpful discussions of the contextualization of theological truth. Though we have been helped greatly by them, it is high time we began to deal also with allegiance and spiritual power, two additional dimensions that Jesus considered of great importance. Any adequate and appropriate treatment of the contextualization of biblical Christianity needs to deal with all three of these "crucial dimensions." For allegiance to Christ is the basis for all we do that makes us Christian, and Jesus was very much into spiritual power. If we are to be truly biblical, we must deal also with these areas. This book is not a festschrift even though it is dedicated to Dr. Dean S. Gilliland, who joined the faculty of Fuller's School of Intercultural Studies in 1977 and has since been developing an emphasis on teaching and research concerning contextualized theology. This is a new textbook aimed at expanding our understanding of contextualization and better enabling us to effectively and appropriately communicate biblical Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus is Lord over everything. So his lordship should shape every aspect of life. But what impact does faith really have on our day-today existence? And how should we, as Christians, interact with the culture? In Every Square Inch, Bruce Ashford skillfully navigates such questions. Drawing on sources like Abraham Kuyper, C.S. Lewis, and Francis Schaeffer, he shows how our faith is relevant to all dimensions of culture. The gospel informs everything we do. We cannot maintain the artificial distinction between "sacred" and "secular." We must proclaim Jesus with our lips and promote him with our lives, no matter what cultural contexts we may find ourselves in.

Throughout all this Mooren tackles that one question: why become a Christian at all?

Book Encyclopedia of Christianity in the Global South

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Christianity in the Global South written by Mark A. Lamport and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 1119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity has transformed many times in its 2,000-year history, from its roots in the Middle East to its presence around the world today. From the mid-twentieth century onward the presence of Christianity has increased dramatically in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and the majority of the world’s Christians are now nonwhite and non-Western. The Encyclopedia of Christianity in the Global South traces both the historical evolution and contemporary themes in Christianity in more than 150 countries and regions. The volumes include maps, images, and a detailed timeline of key events. The phrases “Global Christianity” and “World Christianity” are inadequate to convey the complexity of the countries and regions involved—this encyclopedia, with its more than 500 entries, aims to offer rich perspectives on the varieties of Christianity where it is growing, how the spread of Christianity shapes the faith in various regions, and how the faith is changing worldwide.
