Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative guide to the principles and practice of archives management in private and public sector organizations has been substantially revised. It now provides detailed advice on changes in national and international standards and approaches, in particular ISAD(G) (International Standard Archival Description) and ISASAR(CPF) (International Standard Archive Authority Record). The new edition also includes guidance on the interpretation of the Manual of Archival Description, also published by Gower. Michael Cook takes the reader through the history, definition and function of archives and archival services, international service models, staffing and resource issues. He explains how to set up and run a records management programme, manage the interface with archival management, conduct a records survey, set up retention schedules and organize appraisal, acquisition and disposal in a way which ensures the service meets organizational and individual needs. Chapters covering the arrangement, coding and description of archival material, and the administration of its physical storage, demonstrate how efficient management facilitates the accessibility of archival information. The book concludes with chapters on computing and user issues, such as rights of access, Freedom of Information, security and data protection standards. This key reference on best practice is intended for students and lecturers in archives administration and records management, and for archives and records managers, particularly those newly qualified or seeking professional registration. Managers without formal qualifications but responsible for records or archives management, and information managers working with archivists and records managers, will find it helps to improve working methods and to run a more effective archives service within the modern information management environment.

Download or read book Processing the Past written by Francis X. Blouin Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processing the Past explores the dramatic changes taking place in historical understanding and archival management, and hence the relations between historians and archivists. Written by an archivist and a historian, it shows how these changes have been brought on by new historical thinking, new conceptions of archives, changing notions of historical authority, modifications in archival practices, and new information technologies. The book takes an "archival turn" by situating archives as subjects rather than places of study, and examining the increasingly problematic relationships between historical and archival work. By showing how nineteenth- and early twentieth-century historians and archivists in Europe and North America came to occupy the same conceptual and methodological space, the book sets the background to these changes. In the past, authoritative history was based on authoritative archives and mutual understandings of scientific research. These connections changed as historians began to ask questions not easily answered by traditional documentation, and archivists began to confront an unmanageable increase in the amount of material they processed and the challenges of new electronic technologies. The authors contend that historians and archivists have divided into two entirely separate professions with distinct conceptual frameworks, training, and purposes, as well as different understandings of the authorities that govern their work. Processing the Past moves toward bridging this divide by speaking in one voice to these very different audiences. Blouin and Rosenberg conclude by raising the worrisome question of what future historical archives might be like if historical scholars and archivists no longer understand each other, and indeed, whether their now different notions of what is archival and historical will ever again be joined.
Download or read book The Nordic Model of Digital Archiving written by Greg Bak and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic Model of Digital Archiving explores the roots and strengths of Nordic digital archiving and proposes new directions to guide digital archivists in addressing the challenges posed by ever- changing digital technologies and the datafication of information and records. Digitization and born-digital records promise efficient and cost-effective solutions to everything from preservation of data to easy user access. However, digitization also poses challenges for archival practitioners worldwide. Bringing together contributions from practitioners and academics to offer a range of international case studies, this book offers practical solutions for archivists in terms of governance, technologies and processes. It highlights and analyses the cornerstones of the Nordic model of archiving: reliance on standards; powerful regulatory instruments -, especially in public sector archiving, including legislation; and collaboration between archivists and government agencies, and among different tiers of central and local government. While showcasing work in the Nordic region for the benefit of archivists and record keepers globally, this volume also challenges the limits of the Nordic model with insights drawn from international archival theory. The Nordic Model of Digital Archiving offers a new perspective on archiving that will be of interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students of archiving, digital archives and records management.

Download or read book Globalization and English Education in Taiwan written by I-Chung Ke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ke’s book examines and reflects on English education in Taiwan from a global English perspective, starting with a discussion on globalization and global Englishes. English education in Taiwan has gone through various major transformations since the intensification of globalization after the 1990s. On one hand, children start to learn English ever earlier while on the other hand, the curriculum and materials in the vocational schools and at the tertiary level become diversified to meet various specific needs of English use. Internationalization of education has brought increasing numbers of international students, and the roles of English in Taiwan are changing constantly with the dynamic environment, from a foreign language to a lingua franca, medium of instruction, and an international language. In his book, the author documents the historical development of education and the roles of English in Taiwan before reviewing curriculum reforms and changes in the past half century. He then presents teachers' and students’ perceptions on global Englishes. He proposes global Englishes' pedagogies and his views on what changes can be made to textbooks, learning materials, entrance exams, translation, and the linguistic environment. Practical suggestions to English education in Taiwan in the globalizing context serve as a tentative conclusion for the book. Offering insights into English education and its relationship with globalization, Ke’s book will be useful to researchers and students in the fields of global Englishes and English education as well as offering practical pedagogical suggestions for English educators around the world.
