  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Charles Taylor written by Mark Redhead and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination and critique of the theoretical and political efforts of Taylor to promote "deep diversity" as an antidote to the process of political fragmentation in general and, specifically, in his home of Quebec. Redhead (political theory, Oregon State U.) argues that Taylor's opposition to Quebecois separatists is equally rooted in a political theory of communitarian liberalism, his political activities within the New Democratic Party of Canada and Quebec, his understanding of his Catholic faith, and his experiences growing up in an Anglo-French household. Redhead argues that Taylor's philosophy ultimately fails to address questions of nationalist projects that "simplify identity" or questions of openness to different moral ontologies.

Book The Politics of Resentment

Download or read book The Politics of Resentment written by Philip Resnick and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Resnick examines the role of British Columbia in the Canadian unity debate and explores what makes it stand apart as a region. He looks at the views of politicians, opinion-makers, and ordinary British Columbians on the challenges posed by Quebec nationalism, their sense of estrangement from central Canada, and what they see as the future of Canadian unity. He provides a provocative new way of thinking about British Columbia's place within the federation, and his wide range of sources - government documents, media, and academic literature on regionalism and nationalism - capture what underlies the often fractured relationship between Canada's westemmost province and the rest of the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1957 after a century of scathing debates and threats of provincial separation Ottawa finally tackled the dangerous fiscal inequalities among its richer and poorer provinces. Equalization grants allowed the poorer provinces to provide relatively equal services for relatively equal levels of taxation. The Art of Sharing tells the dramatic history of Canada's efforts to save itself. The introduction of federal equalization grants was controversial and wealthier provinces such as Alberta – wanting to keep more of their taxpayers' money for their own governments – continue to attack them today. Mary Janigan argues that the elusive ideal of fiscal equity in spite of dissent from richer provinces has helped preserve Canada as a united nation. Janigan goes back to Confederation to trace the escalating tensions among the provinces across decades as voters demanded more services to survive in a changing world. She also uncovers the continuing contacts between Canada and Australia as both dominions struggled to placate disgruntled member states and provinces that blamed the very act of federation for their woes. By the mid-twentieth century trapped between the demands of social activists and Quebec's insistence on its right to run its own social programs Ottawa adopted non-conditional grants in compromise. The history of equalization in Canada has never been fully explored. Introducing the idealistic Canadians who fought for equity along with their radically different proposals to achieve it The Art of Sharing makes the case that a willingness to share financial resources is the real tie that has bound the federation together into the twenty-first century.

Book Faith in Democracy Religion and Politics in Canada

Download or read book Faith in Democracy Religion and Politics in Canada written by Boris DeWiel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays questions the capacity of Canadian democracy to promote religious pluralism and recognize disparate faith groups as legitimate players on the political stage. These are more than rhetorical questions, as issues and public policies in contemporary Canada reflect an increasing concern that religion and religious belief ought not to intrude in political debate and matters of governance. Despite playing an active role in Canadian politics in the past, religious faith now risks relegation to the private sector. Efforts to push religious belief outside the public square set a dangerous precedent, provide rationale for further exclusion rather than inclusion, and logically culminate in monism rather than pluralism. Faith in Democracy focuses on contemporary challenges to religious pluralism in Canada with attention to the changing religious landscape throughout the country. These challenges are both old and new. They include such tasks as reconciling universal and particular perspectives of liberalism in law and recognizing the limits of secularism as an emergent dominant faith. How Canada responds to these challenges will not only influence public policy, but also test its commitment to democracy.

Book A History of Human Rights in Canada

Download or read book A History of Human Rights in Canada written by Janet Miron and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights, equality, and social justice are at the forefront of public concern and political debate in Canada. Global events--especially the "war on terrorism"―have fostered further interest in the abuse of human rights, especially when sanctioned or perpetuated by democratic governments. This groundbreaking contributed volume seeks to shed light on this topic by uniting original essays that examine the history of human rights in Canada. Contributors explore a variety of themes integral to the post-confederation period, including immigration and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, disability, state formation, and provincial-federal relations. Three key issues emerge throughout: incidents of discrimination in both government and society, the efforts of human rights and civil liberties activists to create a more open and tolerant society, and the implementation of state legislation designed to protect or enhance civil rights.
