Book excerpt: Chicano English can rightly be said to be, in its different varieties, the most widespread ethnic dialect of U.S. English, spoken by large sections of the population in the American Southwest. It represents a type of speech referred to by E. Haugen as a ‘bilingual’ dialect, having developed out of a stable Spanish-English setting. In their book, the authors provide a comprehensive examination of Chicano English, devoting particular emphasis to the social factors determining its characteristic features and uses. Special attention is given to the question of homogeneity as against ordered variation within Chicano English, to features of pronunciation and grammar, to its communicative functions, to the evaluative attitudes of its speakers and others and, finally, to its uses in literature and the media. In spite of its importance, Chicano English has been insufficiently documented; this monograph is intended to contribute towards redressing the balance.

Book excerpt: Despite their citizenship and English monolingualism, Mexican Americans have long been known to remain largely working class, which, academically, has meant that they tend to be mostly high school graduates, with low rates of college attendance and completion. Attempting to understand this phenomenon, Five Generations of a Mexican American Family in Los Angeles chronicles the home, work and school lives of the author's multigenerational family throughout the twentieth century. Using oral histories of 33 members across five generations, the Fuentes story illuminates the interaction between race, ethnicity and class at home, in the labor market and in schools, which circumscribe the opportunity and resources (or lack thereof) for academic success. Generally, findings show that these factors work together to reproduce the family's social standing over generations. Equally important, the analysis reveals how the persistence and strength of the Fuentes' heritage cultural values (buena educaci-n and familism) have insulated them from the continued threat of racial discrimination and economic hardship in American life. The Fuentes story provides the reader with a keen view of the process by which Fuentes' moved from immigrants to ethnic Americans, and shows how they have gracefully survived the harsh and unpredictable nature of being of a racial minority and the working class.

First paragraph defines and describes Chicano English. The main part of this paper is divided into two chapters - the first deals with linguistic aspects of ChE, and the second discusses possible ways to integrate the topic “Chicano English” into English lessons in German secondary schools. The first chapter of the main part provides an overview of the phonology of Chicano English, focusing on its characteristic phonetic features. Next, in the following chapter, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of Chicano English are covered. The second part of this paper explores the possibilities to integrate the topic “Chicano English” into English lessons in German secondary schools, introducing a teaching unit for German Grammar school students in Year 11. Besides, this paragraph discusses the importance and the relevance of this topic for developing student’s awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity of English. The final chapter provides a brief summary of the key points of this paper.

Book excerpt: A study was undertaken to gather attitudes of Spanish-speakers toward specific types of Chicano Spanish dialect lexical items. Reactions were randomly taken from 11 Latin American students who attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale during the 1975 spring semester; 20 Mexican residents of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, who attended English as a second language classes at El Paso Community College during the 1977 spring semester; and 20 Chicanos of El Paso who attended El Paso Community College during the 1977 spring semester. The respondents were asked to react to lexical items in a bilingual list of sentences and to provide a synonym to the lexical item. They were then asked questions designed to evaluate their linguistics sensitivity or awareness. They were also given a personal data sheet. The data collected demonstrated that both Mexicans and Chicanos recognize a Chicano Spanish dialect. The responses clearly show Chicano Spanish to be stigmatized by Mexicans, whereas Latin Americans are more receptive to this dialect. Chicanos appear willing to accept and use the dialect although some socio-linguistic stigma is associated with it. (Author/AMH). -- page 1.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of the book is to describe the two linguistic-cultural phenomena arising from mass emigration of Mexicans to Los Angeles: Spanish-English bilingualism and Spanglish. The main thesis of the research is the correlation between Spanish-English bilingualism and Spanglish. As public opinion deemed Spanglish as a blocker for linguistic advancement or degraded Spanish, it is actually a method of enhancing the linguistic system. That is why, not only does the research contest the use of such terms, but it also argues that bilingualism is a much more compound and adequate term as well as an analytic framework for the study of bilingual productions. Spanglish should be understood as a form of bilingualism, a hybrid enriching the linguistic system.
