Download or read book Dodgerland written by Michael Fallon and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1977-78 Los Angeles Dodgers came close. Their tough lineup of young and ambitious players squared off with the New York Yankees in consecutive World Series. The Dodgers' run was a long time in the making after years of struggle and featured many homegrown players who went on to noteworthy or Hall of Fame careers, including Don Sutton, Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, and Steve Yeager. Dodgerland is the story of those memorable teams as Chavez Ravine began to change, baseball was about to enter a new era, and American culture experienced a shift to the "me" era. Part journalism, part social history, and part straight sportswriting, Dodgerland is told through the lives of four men, each representing different aspects of this L.A. story. Tom Lasorda, the vocal manager of the Dodgers, gives an up-close view of the team's struggles and triumphs; Tom Fallon, a suburban small-business owner, witnesses the Dodgers' season and the changes to California's landscape--physical, social, political, and economic; Tom Wolfe, a chronicler of California's ever-changing culture, views the events of 1977-78 from his Manhattan writer's loft; and Tom Bradley, Los Angeles's mayor and the region's most dominant political figure of the time, gives a glimpse of the wider political, demographic, and economic forces that affected the state at the time. The boys in blue drew baseball's focus in those two seasons, but the intertwining narratives tell a larger story about California, late 1970s America, and great promise unrealized.

Book excerpt: Enduring great danger and often terrible conditions in heavy seas, the Rescue Tug Services worked tirelessly to bring to port damaged vessels and keep up the supply of food and essential items during two world wars. They were first deployed towards the end of the First World War to support and if necessary to salvage merchant shipping that had been damaged by U-boat attacks. During the Second World War they were needed even more urgently when ships bringing food and other essential supplies to a beleaguered Britain were attacked by both air strikes and submarines. Although part of the Royal Navy, the contribution of the Rescue Tug Service remained curiously absent from the naval history of the Second World War. Yet the Service had developed what a wartime American newspaper called 'a new type of naval vessel – the British fighting escort tug' and had saved millions of tons of shipping, both warships and merchant ships, not to mention the crews and the precious cargoes. The official history of the Merchant Navy did not mention the Service either, nor did numerous other books on the war at sea. In 2014 author Ian Dear was given access to the archives of the Deep Sea Rescue Tug Service which were about to be disbanded. His research, here and elsewhere produced a view of the war at sea from an entirely new angle. The result, The 'Tattie Lads' explores why the service might have been omitted from the official story, and reveals its fascinating history in a full-length book for the first time.

Book The Corporate Paradox

Download or read book The Corporate Paradox written by Alan Felstead and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-02 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993, The Corporate Paradox is the first major, in-depth study of the franchise relationship and how it functions. While past debates have focused on the question: ‘What do bosses do?’, we are now being asked: ‘Who really is the boss?’. Since the late 1970s the emergence of franchising arrangements has been a major part of the wider process of change taking place in the nature of modern business organization. The names of franchise companies are familiar to most people: Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Pepsi cola, Body Shop, to name but a few. But how many people realize that each such outlet is a separate legal entity owned by a local franchisee? Franchising remains, at best, little understood. In this book, Alan Felstead explores who controls what, why and how, setting his discussion within the context of the many current changes affecting traditional contractual bonds between employers and employees, producers and buyers, owners and managers. This is a must read for students of management, organizational studies, marketing, industrial sociology and commercial law.

Book At Home Away from Home

Download or read book At Home Away from Home written by Ojaide, Tanure and published by Cissus World Press. This book was released on 2019-07-18 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody wants to be a stranger at home, even if one wants to feel at home in an alien country. Celebrated Nigerian author Tanure Ojaide in this memoir recounts his experiences as a Nigerian living and working in the United States. Feeling at home in the United States, but not all the time is coupled with a longing to visit his natal home, as if possessed by the god of nativity, to his home country he goes. Drawn both ways, in a tough tug of war, depending upon where he finds himself—he is caught up in an unending oscillation; now at home and wishing to leave, and soon outside and wishing to be back at home. Often feeling like a stranger no matter how long he has lived and worked in the United States. Not feeling like a stranger he has also refused to blend, wearing materials that make him stand out as an outsider, an African, a Nigerian, a foreigner. There are other differences of beliefs and ideas which do not follow the mainstream, he seems to see things often from different perspective, as a postcolonial fellow, and the others from their metropolitan position of power. He feels he was already formed as a man before his relocation, maybe he is what he is by choice or remain so instinctively.

Book excerpt: A touchstone novel of lesbian adolescence, set years before gay liberation. “Dear Miss Maxfield … what I’m really afraid of is that I am a homosexual human being. I wish you were one too but I don’t think it’s possible there could be so many in one school, do you?—probably there is only one person who is homosexual in one place at one time and that one person (I am afraid) is me …” First published in 1982 and set prior to Stonewall, Jane DeLynn’s In Thrall is a touchstone narrative of lesbian adolescence. Publishing Triangle called it one of the “best gay and lesbian novels of all time.” After sixteen-year-old Lynn writes her thirty-seven-year-old English teacher a letter, they embark on one of the funniest—and saddest—love affairs in fiction, shrouded in secrecy and guilt. Years before gay liberation, all Lynn knows about “lezbos” is that they wear their hair in crew cuts, buy suits like her father’s, and sprout mustaches over their upper lips. Trying to pass as “normal,” Lynn continues to neck with her boyfriend and make homophobic jokes with her friends. Feigning innocence with her parents, she checks the mirror for telltale signs of “perversion” each night. Profound, witty, poignant, and highly charged, In Thrall has been compared to The Catcher in the Rye and to Edmund White’s A Boy’s Own Story. “The single most wonderful quality of this novel,” the Los Angeles Times Book Review writes, “is its absolute credibility.” This new edition includes a foreword by Irish author Colm Tóibín.

  • Author : Jeff Emmerson
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2017-08-31

Download or read book Beyond ADHD written by Jeff Emmerson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond ADHD weaves Emmerson’s personal story of his ADHD diagnosis, exploring along the way the latest medical, scientific and societal explanations and tools for managing and living with the condition. Including interviews with a number of experts at the forefront of next-generation ADHD diagnostics and treatment, he questions the cookie-cutter way ADHD is commonly diagnosed and treated. Suggesting that the list of symptoms often used to identify ADHD can be attributed to many other disorders and conditions, he explores how and why ADHD diagnoses have increased by 50% in the last ten years. Emmerson advocates a different approach to ADHD, arguing that it should be a diagnosis of exclusion rather than the other way around, and that we must look past the label, recognizing that individual symptoms vary and treatment plans should be better tailored to the individual. He examines mental and behavioral issues from all sides, including the possibility that nurturing – rather than trying to alter or suppress – the active, “360-degree” mind is a viable way for those diagnosed with ADHD to realize their gifts and lead purposeful lives.

At the same time, you do good and support sustainable projects. Because especially emotionally intelligent, introverted and highly sensitive people find it difficult in everyday working life and in conflicts to assert their opinion and become visible. However, this is indispensable for professional success, because only those who show themselves, perform well, but also know how to use the power of rhetoric for themselves, are also noticed by bosses and customers and can shine. Therefore, they should definitely strengthen their self-love and self-confidence, both are indispensable for success. However, empaths in particular often confuse self-care, which is so important, i.e. taking care of one's own well-being, with egoism. In the end, if you can love and accept yourself, you can shine and succeed in front of others. This book shows how that works. Good luck and have fun reading.
