Download or read book The Grace of Dogs written by Andrew Root and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the bestselling tradition of Inside of a Dog and Marley & Me, a smart, illuminating, and entertaining read on why the dog-human relationship is unique--and possibly even "spiritual." Dr. Andrew Root's search for the canine soul began the day his eight-year-old son led the family in a moving Christian ritual at the burial service for Kirby, their beloved black lab. In the coming weeks, Root found himself wondering: What was this thing we'd experienced with this animal? Why did the loss hurt so poignantly? Why did his son's act seem so right in its sacramental feel? In The Grace of Dogs, Root draws on biology, history, theology, cognitive ethology (the study of animal minds), and paleontology to trace how in our mutual evolution, humans and dogs have so often helped each other to become more fully ourselves. Root explores questions like: Do dogs have souls? Is it accurate to say that dogs "love" us? What do psychology and physiology say about why we react to dogs in the way that we do? The Grace of Dogs paints a vivid picture of how, beyond sentimentality, the dog-human connection can legitimately be described as "spiritual"--as existing not for the sake of gain, but for the unselfish desire to be with and for the other, and to remind us that we are persons worthy of love and able to share love. In this book for any parent whose kids have asked if they'll see Fido in Heaven, or who has looked their beloved dog in the face and wondered what's going on in there, Dr. Root delivers an illuminating and heartfelt read that will change how we understand man's best friend.
Download or read book Trauma and Grace written by Serene Jones and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantive collection of essays by Serene Jones explores recent works in the field of trauma studies. Central to its overall theme is an investigation of the myriad ways both individual and collective violence affect one's capacity to remember, to act, and to love; how violence can challenge theological understandings of grace; and even how the traumatic experience of Jesus' death is remembered. Of particular interest is Jones's focus on the long-term effects of collective violence on abuse survivors, war veterans, and marginalized populations, and the discrete ways in which grace and redemption might be exhibited in each context. At the heart of each essay are two deeply interrelated faith-claims that are central to Jones's understanding of Christian theology: first, we live in a world profoundly broken by violence; second, God loves this world and desires that suffering be met by words of hope, of love, and of grace. This truly cutting-edge book is the first trauma study to directly take into account theological issues.

"Beautiful, heart wrenching, amazing, powerful" E.D., British Columbia "This is one of the most inspiring works I have ever read...passionate and discerning, it discloses what we want and why we're afraid of having it. My wife found me in tears. The last chapter blew me away." J.M., Florida "This book reminds us that there is sanity in the midst of all that isn't sane and hope when despair seeks to make us its own. If we do nothing more than bear our imperfect witness to that truth, life is worth the living." R.K., Connecticut "It's been a long time - maybe never - since I've read something so deep and powerfully written, so truthful to its core. This work is beautiful in every sense of the word, even in spite of or because of the wrenching loss that occasioned it." S.B., New Hampshire

Download or read book Cinema and Contact written by Laura McMahon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the work of contemporary French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, Cinema and Contact investigates the aesthe-tics and politics of touch in the cinema of three of the most prominent and distinctive filmmakers to have emerged in France during the last fifty years: Robert Bresson, Marguerite Duras and Claire Denis. Countering the domi-nant critical account of touch elaborated by recent models of embodied spectatorship, this book argues that cinema offers a privileged space for understanding touch in terms of spacing and withdrawal rather than immediacy and continuity. Such a deconstructive configuration of touch is shown here to have far-reaching implications, inviting an innovative rethinking of politics, aesthetics and theology via the textures of cinema. The first study to bring the thought of Nancy into sustained dialogue with a series of detailed analyses of films, Cinema and Contact also forges new interpretative perspectives on Bresson, Duras and Denis, tracing a compelling two-way exchange between cinema and philosophy.
