Book excerpt: "2005 Turner Prize winner Simon Starling is known for his investigations into the hidden lives of objects and images, and his catalogues are an integral part of his production. The Nanjing Particles, published for an exhibition at MASS MoCA, is a unique object that takes as its departure a historical stereograph of Chinese laborers brought to Massachusetts in 1870 to break a strike. Starling literally mined the photographs for their history, extracting from their emulsion two silver particles. Enlarged one million times, the microscopic grains were translated into stainless steel sculptures fabricated by workers in Nanjing. Taking viewers through the installation and the work's fabrication process, the book reiterates the visual and conceptual play of the exhibition. The cover, which features die-cut peepholes, mimics the form of a structure in the exhibition. Readers can use the book itself as a low-tech stereoscope to view the photographs - printed on the inside covers - as a single three-dimensional image." --Book Jacket.

  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2014-09-24
  • ISBN : 1499024134
  • Pages : 826 pages

Download or read book Pilgrims Passage written by Joe Buda and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does Pilgrims’ Passage matter? Why can greed and deceit still manipulate us? Why do people choose power over family? Working to address these questions and more, Pilgrims Passage: Into a New Millennium and Rebuilding the Past are journeys brimming with adventures through turbulent times during the transition into the twenty-first century. For Paul Bardeck and Claudia Weiss, discovering a thousand-year-old monk’s journal fuels their quest to rebuild a mysterious ancient monastery perched upon the foothills in the Slovakian High Tatras, with the promise of releasing boundless energy stored within ancient ruins, as well as the Book of ONE. Concurrently, Karl Vloda’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for wealth and power, fueled by the Black Star Pact’s dark energy, seems to make the quest for ancient truths a sideshow. As the pilgrims’ paths entangle, will the promise of timely truths finally come to light? Does standing against the powers of darkness really matter today?

Book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind

Download or read book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind written by Julian Jaynes and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist: “This man’s ideas may be the most influential, not to say controversial, of the second half of the twentieth century.”—Columbus Dispatch At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes's still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only three thousand years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion—and indeed our future. “Don’t be put off by the academic title of Julian Jaynes’s The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Its prose is always lucid and often lyrical…he unfolds his case with the utmost intellectual rigor.”—The New York Times “When Julian Jaynes . . . speculates that until late in the twentieth millennium BC men had no consciousness but were automatically obeying the voices of the gods, we are astounded but compelled to follow this remarkable thesis.”—John Updike, The New Yorker “He is as startling as Freud was in The Interpretation of Dreams, and Jaynes is equally as adept at forcing a new view of known human behavior.”—American Journal of Psychiatry

Book excerpt: All hardbacks in the first print run will be signed by the author. The story of genre fiction - horror, romantic fiction, science fiction, crime writing, and more - is also the story of Irish fiction. Irish writers have given the world Lemuel Gulliver, Dracula, and the world of Narnia. They have produced pioneering tales of detection, terrifying ghost stories and ground-breaking women's popular fiction. Now, for the first time, John Connolly's one volume presents the history of Irish genre writing and uses it to explore how we think about fiction itself. Deeply researched, and passionately argued, SHADOW VOICES takes the lives of more than sixty writers - by turns tragic, amusing, and adventurous, but always extraordinary - and sets them alongside the stories they have written, to create a new way of looking at genre and literature, both Irish and beyond. Here are vampires and monsters, murderers and cannibals. Here are female criminal masterminds and dogged detectives, star-crossed lovers and vengeful spouses. Here are the SHADOW VOICES.

Book An Absolutely Remarkable Thing

Download or read book An Absolutely Remarkable Thing written by Hank Green and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Sparkling with mystery, humor and the uncanny, this is a fun read. But beneath its effervescent tone, more complex themes are at play.” —San Francisco Chronicle In his wildly entertaining debut novel, Hank Green—cocreator of Crash Course, Vlogbrothers, and SciShow—spins a sweeping, cinematic tale about a young woman who becomes an overnight celebrity before realizing she's part of something bigger, and stranger, than anyone could have possibly imagined. The Carls just appeared. Roaming through New York City at three a.m., twenty-three-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship—like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor—April and her best friend, Andy, make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day, April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world—from Beijing to Buenos Aires—and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight. Seizing the opportunity to make her mark on the world, April now has to deal with the consequences her new particular brand of fame has on her relationships, her safety, and her own identity. And all eyes are on April to figure out not just what the Carls are, but what they want from us. Compulsively entertaining and powerfully relevant, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing grapples with big themes, including how the social internet is changing fame, rhetoric, and radicalization; how our culture deals with fear and uncertainty; and how vilification and adoration spring for the same dehumanization that follows a life in the public eye. The beginning of an exciting fiction career, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is a bold and insightful novel of now.
