Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tortoise as the Wisest and Smartest in His Kingdom is an Ogoni (African) folklore creatively told to instruct humans using animal subjects as interventionists. In this story, King Tortoise, as in many Ogoni stories, is considered the wisest and smartest yet one of the creepiest and smaller creatures in the animal kingdom. As a result, in an era that witnessed a devastating hunger crisis never seen in the animal kingdom, Tortoise stepped up and used his smartness and an instance of creepiness to mobilize and help his kingdom survive the hunger/plague. With his wisdom, after mobilizing struggling animals and persuading them to donate a portion of whatever food they might have, no matter how small, the animals were able to collect several million tons of food and shared among themselves. With his leadership, members of his kingdom subsequently planted more seeds that grew and produced lots of food that lasted for a long time. These efforts helped end food scarcity in the animal kingdom even though they still have to seek food to this day. By his efforts and in collaboration with others—among them monkeys, lions, parrots, and horses—animals then and today have been fortified, as they vowed not to allow another hunger crisis destroy them. Nevertheless, they face one serious threat today, and it’s global warming and climate change, which also threaten human beings. Although millions of animals, fishes, other aquatics, birds, and plants died by the time Tortoise came up with a solution, a crisis that could have wiped out all animals was averted. King Tortoise pulled the plug while the food was about to be shared. He asked other animals to group themselves by name and called himself All of Us. As sharing began, his name was first on the list. The sharer announced the name All of Us, and King Tortoise stood up and attempted to claim all the food, arguing that his name meant all the food belonged to him alone. This move angered all the animals. Sadly, they were badly beaten and broken by hunger that fighting Tortoise was not an option. At this point, King Tortoise laughed. He beat his chest and said he was kidding yet proved he was the wisest of all in the kingdom. Irrespective of his wisdom, he declared, “I am also very humble and committed to servicing my kingdom, hence the intervention.”

Download or read book Folktales Volume 1 All About Tortoise written by Emma Umana Clasberry and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains sixty-five old-time bedtime stories! Two opposite faces of Tortoise’s character are revealed here: the good and the bad. Tortoise, once loved and respected for his kindness, hard work, persistence, patience, wisdom, and super intelligence to dig out and solve the toughest puzzles or the most difficult and mysterious problems, is the same Tortoise who lost all that to lying, tricking, selfishness, revengefulness, greed, stealing, jealousy, and exploiting others’ weaknesses under the pretense of helping when he is actually out to hurt those he claims to help so as to achieve his goals. Parents, teachers, or others who use these stories for moral and life skills education should emphasize genuine moral values or virtues and also point out that how one gets to one’s goal should be as morally sound as the goal itself. So their discretion is crucial when addressing moral relativism, if any is obvious.
Download or read book The Tortoise Tales written by Sally Scott Guynn and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tortoise Tales Written and Illustrated by Sally Scott Guynn Bindi Irwin meets Uncle Remus or a cross between Nat Geo and Disney is how some are describing this endearing new children's book cleverly disguised to both teach and entertain. Ezra, a wise old giant of a tortoise, narrates nine original animal stories to a girl riding on his back. Separate stories star fictional animal characters facing situations similar to our own--bullying, social acceptance, or how about a monkey with a personal hygiene issue, an embarrassed fireless dragon, lazy caddisfly larvae underwater and under siege, a brave grackle orphan, a minority goat who thinks he's a cow, a clever chameleon, a vain magpie queen, and an eagle and owl mystery sleuth duo? They all discover it's not always the strongest, the best looking or the smartest that can save the day but how courage, trust, compassion and teamwork can change the most extreme of social challenges into something pretty awesome. Glossaries and discussion questions offer reading bonuses along with the author's compelling art. Count on an increased interest in nature. "illustrations are charming and slightly and delightfully off-kilter...lend The Tortoise Tales great potential to appeal to young readers."-Blueink Review "...enchanting and inspiring"-Best selling author, 'Last Child in the Woods,' Richard Louv "...ideal for cultivating a love and appreciation of nature, wildlife and conservation..."-Clarion Book Review "...combines humorous shenanigans; an approachable, contemporary voice; and intriguing information about animals..."-Kirkus Book Review

Yet again, Dr. Seuss proves that he and classic picture books go hand in hand.
Download or read book Moral Lessons in African Folktales written by Kwame A. Insaidoo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges us to take a cursory glance at our contemporary world, where modern mans scientific and technological ingenuity has led him to soar thorough the galaxy and made the heavens part of his domain; and contrast that with his level of morality today. Open any newspaper or listen to the radio and television news and you cant help but lament on the appalling moral depravity and obscene behavior of our contemporary man. With this intractable moral depravity on the ascendancy, the author nostalgically reminiscences the upright morality of yesteryears, and admonishes us to heed Platos philosophical advice: now since men are by nature acquisitive, jealous, combative, and erotic, how shall we persuade them to behave themselves? By the policemans omnipresent club? {now, AK 47}. It is a brutal method, costly and irritating. There is a better way, and this is by lending to the moral requirements of the community. Throughout this book the author emphasizes the significance of proper moral education in shaping the character of children, youngsters and even adults, and reminds us: morals are the rules by which society exhorts its members and associations to behavior consistent with its 'order, security and growth {Will & Ariel Durant}. The author noted that in traditional African societies, the wise elders, like the ancient Greek philosophers, strongly emphasized the teachability of moral values and deliberately inculcated them into their youngsters. The stories in this book are folktales filled with moral lessons that have been handed down from many generations to the present in many African countries from Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroons, Liberia, the Gambia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania to Zimbabwe. The traditional African elders successfully utilized these folktales to socialize their youngsters to the moral requirements of their society to insure stability, harmonious relations, order, security and growth.
Download or read book The Squirrels and Lions written by Ben Wuloo Ikari and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the importance of honesty and trust. It is about strategic and competent communication, which also comes with suspending judgment before the facts. With this kind of communication, which could be ritualized or relatable, the squirrels were able to be friends with the lions. Although the parent squirrels doubted the honesty and sincerity of the lion when he told the little squirrel and her mother that he will not only protect them for the sake of his daughter who wanted to be friends with the little squirrel so bad when they met at her mother’s farm, but he will give them food they can eat for one year. That is, should the squirrels agree to visit the lions’ home as the younger lioness requested. The squirrels were scared, given the lions’ carnivorous history as designed by nature. With the openness of their young daughter, her ability to listen, and the honesty of the younger lion, they killed their fear, opened up to the lions, and visited their home—a gesture that was returned by the lions. The lions kept their promise and stayed honest. Therefore, if these animals could understand the importance/benefit of honesty, trust, and keeping promises, then human beings can do better. We have done better, but we need to do more to become best and succeed in our friendships and relationships as individuals and with governments and corporations, governments to governments, or between nations, etc. Even as we strive to become better and best in our friendships and relationships, we must not be scared or worried about failing in the process or making mistakes. It is all right to make mistakes, so the fear of perfection or imperfection should not deter us from working hard and failing to become best. Like good and bad or success and failure, mistake is part of life. In short, it is said to be the raw material of success, but only if and when we are determined and committed to succeeding—and not make deliberate mistakes that could be dangerous and destructive.
