Book excerpt: In this paper the authors investigate homological and homotopical aspects of a concept of torsion which is general enough to cover torsion and cotorsion pairs in abelian categories, $t$-structures and recollements in triangulated categories, and torsion pairs in stable categories. The proper conceptual framework for this study is the general setting of pretriangulated categories, an omnipresent class of additive categories which includes abelian, triangulated, stable, and moregenerally (homotopy categories of) closed model categories in the sense of Quillen, as special cases. The main focus of their study is on the investigation of the strong connections and the interplay between (co)torsion pairs and tilting theory in abelian, triangulated and stable categories on one hand, and universal cohomology theories induced by torsion pairs on the other hand. These new universal cohomology theories provide a natural generalization of the Tate-Vogel (co)homology theory. The authors also study the connections between torsion theories and closed model structures, which allow them to classify all cotorsion pairs in an abelian category and all torsion pairs in a stable category, in homotopical terms. For instance they obtain a classification of (co)tilting modules along theselines. Finally they give torsion theoretic applications to the structure of Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay categories, which provide a natural generalization of Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay rings.

Book Relative Index Theory Determinants and Torsion for Open Manifolds

Download or read book Relative Index Theory Determinants and Torsion for Open Manifolds written by Jrgen Eichhorn and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For closed manifolds, there is a highly elaborated theory of number-valued invariants, attached to the underlying manifold, structures and differential operators. On open manifolds, nearly all of this fails, with the exception of some special classes. The goal of this monograph is to establish for open manifolds, structures and differential operators an applicable theory of number-valued relative invariants. This is of great use in the theory of moduli spaces for nonlinear partial differential equations and mathematical physics. The book is self-contained: in particular, it contains an outline of the necessary tools from nonlinear Sobolev analysis.

Book Topics in Torsion Theory

Download or read book Topics in Torsion Theory written by Paul E. Bland and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 1998-11-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torsion theory provides an umbrella under which many classical properties of rings and modules can be reformulated. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a quick introduction to torsion theory and to study selected properties of rings and modules in this setting. The material presented ranges from a torsion theoretical treatment of standard topics in ring and module theory to how previously untreated properties of rings and modules might be dealt with in this setting. The approach has been to develop the material so that classical results can be recovered by selecting an appropriate torsion theory. Simple modules, maximal submodules, the Jacobson radical and modules with chain conditions are investigated relative to a torsion theory. A relative form of Nakayama’s lemma is given and a generalized Hopkins-Levitzki theorem is established. Injective and projective concepts are studied and a generalized Baer’s condition for injective modules and a generalized Fuchs condition for quasi-injective modules are shown to hold. Flat modules and covers and hulls of modules are investigated and the concept of a relative (quasi-)projective cover is used to characterize those rings which are right perfect modulo their torsion ideal. Torsion free covers are also studied and results are given which generalize well known results on torsion free covers for modules (with usual torsion) over an integral domain. Finally, (semi-)primitive, (semi-)simple and (semi-)prime rings are investigated in a torsion theoretical setting and rings which are right primitive relative to a torsion theory are linked to a form of density which is reminiscent of Jacobson density for right primitive rings.

Download or read book Torsion Free Modules written by Eben Matlis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of torsion-free modules over an arbitrary integral domain arises naturally as a generalization of torsion-free abelian groups. In this volume, Eben Matlis brings together his research on torsion-free modules that has appeared in a number of mathematical journals. Professor Matlis has reworked many of the proofs so that only an elementary knowledge of homological algebra and commutative ring theory is necessary for an understanding of the theory. The first eight chapters of the book are a general introduction to the theory of torsion-free modules. This part of the book is suitable for a self-contained basic course on the subject. More specialized problems of finding all integrally closed D-rings are examined in the last seven chapters, where material covered in the first eight chapters is applied. An integral domain is said to be a D-ring if every torsion-free module of finite rank decomposes into a direct sum of modules of rank 1. After much investigation, Professor Matlis found that an integrally closed domain is a D-ring if, and only if, it is the intersection of at most two maximal valuation rings.

Book Singular Torsion and the Splitting Properties

Download or read book Singular Torsion and the Splitting Properties written by K. R. Goodearl and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1972 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is concerned with studying necessary and sufficient conditions on a ring [italic]R such that for certain classes of right [italic]R-modules, the singular submodule of any member of the class is a direct summand of the module. The classes of interest are the class of all right [italic]R-modules, the class of all finitely generated right [italic]R-modules, and the class of all right [italic]R-modules whose singular submodules have bounded order.

Book Structural Concrete

Download or read book Structural Concrete written by M. Nadim Hassoun and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 1072 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most up to date structural concrete text, with the latest ACI revisions Structural Concrete is the bestselling text on concrete structural design and analysis, providing the latest information and clear explanation in an easy to understand style. Newly updated to reflect the latest ACI 318-14 code, this sixth edition emphasizes a conceptual understanding of the subject, and builds the student's body of knowledge by presenting design methods alongside relevant standards and code. Numerous examples and practice problems help readers grasp the real-world application of the industry's best practices, with explanations and insight on the extensive ACI revision. Each chapter features examples using SI units and US-SI conversion factors, and SI unit design tables are included for reference. Exceptional weather-resistance and stability make concrete a preferred construction material for most parts of the world. For civil and structural engineering applications, rebar and steel beams are generally added during casting to provide additional support. Pre-cast concrete is becoming increasingly common, allowing better quality control, the use of special admixtures, and the production of innovative shapes that would be too complex to construct on site. This book provides complete guidance toward all aspects of reinforced concrete design, including the ACI revisions that address these new practices. Review the properties of reinforced concrete, with models for shrink and creep Understand shear, diagonal tension, axial loading, and torsion Learn planning considerations for reinforced beams and strut and tie Design retaining walls, footings, slender columns, stairs, and more The American Concrete Institute updates structural concrete code approximately every three years, and it's critical that students learn the most recent standards and best practices. Structural Concrete provides the most up to date information, with intuitive explanation and detailed guidance.

Book Behavior of UHPC Structural Members subjected to Pure Torsion

Download or read book Behavior of UHPC Structural Members subjected to Pure Torsion written by Mohammed Ismail and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is characterized by a very high compressive strength which may reach more than 200 MPa. The behavior of this material under tension and compression actions has been established to be very brittle in nature. Discontinuous fibers (normally steel fibers) are usually added to the UHPC mix to introduce ductility. In order to investigate the beneficial effects of using fiber reinforced UHPC in structural members subjected to torsion, a series of experimental tests on 17 UHPC beams subjected to pure torsion were carried out. The test beams consisted of plain UHPC beams, UHPC beams reinforced with steel fibers only, UHPC reinforced with steel fibers and different combinations of traditional longitudinal and transverse reinforcement. The plain UHPC beams showed very brittle behavior, whereas the UHPC beams with steel fibers only showed a post cracking ductile behavior. The addition of little steel fiber volume (e.g. 0.5 %) to the plain UHPC beams enhanced the ductility. The enhancement at the ultimate capacity amounts to about 20 %. Meanwhile, the steel fibers with 0.9 % by volume showed much enhanced ductility and a maximum enhancement of the torsional carrying capacity up to 32 %. The addition of moderate steel fiber volume (e.g. 0.9 %) to one type of traditional reinforcement (either longitudinal or transverse) accomplished an effective post cracking torsional carrying mechanism. The steel fibers shows a tendency to replace the missing type of traditional reinforcement, however this should be confirmed by more tests and by using higher steel fiber volumes. A series of experimental tests on fiber reinforced UHPC prisms to investigate the post cracking shear strength and stiffness of the used UHPC mix (e.g. M3Q) was conducted. The results of these tests revealed that this fine grained UHPC mix has a weak post cracking shear behavior. The results of these tests were used later in the Finite Element (F.E) model. An analytical model based on the well known thin-walled tube analogy was developed in order to estimate the torsional carrying capacity of beams under pure torsion having different combinations of steel fibers and traditional reinforcement. The comparison between the test and model results showed very good agreement for all cases. A finite element model based on calibrated small scale tests was developed using ATENA F.E. package to predict the full load-deformation behavior of the test beams. The predictions of the model show very good agreement with the test results.
