Book Torn Between America and China

Download or read book Torn Between America and China written by Daniel Novotny and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2010 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can a developing, democratic and predominantly Muslim country like Indonesia manage its foreign relations, while facing a myriad of security concerns and dilemmas in the increasingly complex post-Cold War international politics, without compromising its national interests and sacrificing its independence? Approaching this problem from the vantage point of the Indonesian foreign policy elite, this book explores the elite's perceptions about other states and the manner in which these shape the decision-making process and determine policy outcomes. The combined qualitative and quantitative research strategy draws on a unique series of in-depth interviews with 45 members of the Indonesian foreign policy elite that included the country's (present and/or former) presidents, cabinet ministers, high-ranking military officers, and senior diplomats. Among all state actors, Indonesian relations with the United States and China are the highest concern of the elite. The leaders believe that, in the future, Indonesia will increasingly have to manoeuvre between the two rival powers. While the United States during George W. Bush's presidency was seen as the main security threat to Indonesia, China is considered the main malign factor in the long run with power capabilities that need to be constrained and counter-balanced.

Download or read book Torn written by Justin Lee and published by Jericho Books. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evangelical Christian examines the impact of sexuality, the LGBTQ+ movement, and the future of the church in this thoughtful, deeply researched guide to navigating and mending the social and political division in our families and churches. As a teenager and young man, Justin Lee felt deeply torn. Nicknamed "God Boy" by his peers, he knew that he was called to a life in the evangelical Christian ministry. But Lee harbored a secret: He also knew that he was gay. In this groundbreaking book, Lee recalls the events--his coming out to his parents, his experiences with the "ex-gay" movement, and his in-depth study of the Bible--that led him, eventually, to self-acceptance. But more than just a memoir, TORN provides insightful, practical guidance for all committed Christians who wonder how to relate to gay friends or family members--or who struggle with their own sexuality. Convinced that "in a culture that sees gays and Christians as enemies, gay Christians are in a unique position to bring peace," Lee demonstrates that people of faith on both sides of the debate can respect, learn from, and love one another.

Book Torn between East and West

Download or read book Torn between East and West written by Iulian Chifu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a very timely account of the legal, economic and political consequences for border states caught in the current tug-of-war between the West and Russia. The Ukraine crisis of 2014 focused policy-makers’ attention on a geographical area full of dangers that had gone relatively unnoticed since the breakup of the Soviet Union, namely the security dynamics of the border states of Eastern Europe and the Black Sea. Twenty-five years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a strong Russia returns alternatively threatening and cajoling, but at risk itself of suffering economic injury from western reprisals over its nostalgia for the map drawn at Yalta. That conflict, which hotted up over the Ukraine, was soon being played out over - and in the air space over - Syria and Turkey, while the border states themselves are likely to be drawn into the European refugee crisis and have the potential, after the 2015 Paris atrocities, to be breeding grounds for international terrorists. This groundbreaking book contains prescient warnings that must be heeded by leaders and diplomats on both sides of the East-West divide.

They have love for God in their hearts and a desire to live out their faith; however, they find themselves yielding to carnal pleasures. Every day they war in the trenches and hurt behind the scenes. This is a real challenge within the church, and many are at a crossroad in their spiritual walk. They are asking themselves, "Do I continue with the masquerade of church as usual, or do I take a hard look at my compromises?" The objective of Torn between Two Worlds is to help hurting Christians move toward a committed, liberated, and dedicated relationship with God. However, this can only be accomplished if there is a willingness to courageously face their compromises. Every Christian has their share of battles with the flesh, and for those who have been restored, they know firsthand the agony that comes behind negotiating their faith. Therefore, we need Christians who are willing to be open and transparent, in hopes of reaching out to those who are trapped by the serpent's devices. The book engages, encourages, and exhorts its readers to consider the vast difference between the kingdom of God and the carnal world. It stresses the importance of a devotional life with God in order to combat self-centered desires.
