Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interstellar matter is one of the most active fields of research in present-day astronomy. Observational information spans the full electromagnetic spectrum from gamma rays through rocket-ultraviolet, optical, infrared and millimeter to long radio waves. Results of research in physical chemistry find as much application as mathematical methods. Interstellar matter plays a leading role in studies of our Galaxy and of external galaxies, and contributes increasingly to stellar astronomy. At the 16th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, held in August 1976 in Grenoble, France, the many new developments in this vast field were surveyed in a number of sessions of Commission 34 (Interstellar Matter), mostly jointly with other Commissions of the Union. Separate sessions were devoted to: The hot interstellar gas phase, Interaction of stars and interstellar medium, Interstellar molecules and dust, The large-scale distribution of interstellar matter in the Galaxy, and Interstellar matter in external galaxies. Twenty-four invited review papers were presented and discussed in these sessions. The quality and success of these topical reviews made it seem desirable to make them available to a wider audience. Professor Edith Muller, the new General Secretary of the IAU, enthusiastically supported the idea. Most importantly, the reviewers - who had originally been pro mised that an oral paper was the only requirement - agreed to prepare written versions. I am grateful to Mrs. Muller, to the authors, and to Reidel Publishing for their collaboration in the preparation of this book.

Book The Science of Interstellar

Download or read book The Science of Interstellar written by Kip Thorne and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey through the otherworldly science behind Christopher Nolan’s award-winning film, Interstellar, from executive producer and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Kip Thorne. Interstellar, from acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan, takes us on a fantastic voyage far beyond our solar system. Yet in The Science of Interstellar, Kip Thorne, the Nobel prize-winning physicist who assisted Nolan on the scientific aspects of Interstellar, shows us that the movie’s jaw-dropping events and stunning, never-before-attempted visuals are grounded in real science. Thorne shares his experiences working as the science adviser on the film and then moves on to the science itself. In chapters on wormholes, black holes, interstellar travel, and much more, Thorne’s scientific insights—many of them triggered during the actual scripting and shooting of Interstellar—describe the physical laws that govern our universe and the truly astounding phenomena that those laws make possible. Download or read book Interstellar Processes written by D.J. Hollenbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for an international symposium on the interstellar medium was first discussed at the University of Wyoming during the summer of 1984. It was obvious that the outstanding natural beauty of the Teton mountain range in northwestern Wyoming must be matched by a meeting with the broadest appeal to the astronomical community. If the meeting was to produce a book, it must likewise be an important contribution to the astronomical literature. It was for these reasons that early in the discussions, it was decided that the University should host a "school". with the invited speakers presenting tutorials on a broad range of topics involving the interstellar medium. The symposium proceedings would then be a compilation of the written versions of these presentations. It has been nearly a decade since Lyman Spitzer published his classic text on the interstellar medium and we felt the need for a school and book that would focus on the recent developments in our understanding of the inter stellar medium. Thus, we view this two-volume set as an adjunct text to Spitzer's book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing interstellar matter in our galaxy in all of its various forms, this book also considers the physical and chemical processes that are occurring within this matter. The first seven chapters present the various components making up the interstellar matter and detail the ways that we are able to study them. The following seven chapters are devoted to the physical, chemical and dynamical processes that control the behaviour of interstellar matter. These include the instabilities and cloud collapse processes that lead to the formation of stars. The last chapter summarizes the transformations that can occur between the different phases of the interstellar medium. Emphasizing methods over results, The Interstellar Medium is written for graduate students, for young astronomers, and also for any researchers who have developed an interest in the interstellar medium.

Book Astrophysics of the Interstellar Medium

Download or read book Astrophysics of the Interstellar Medium written by Giovanni Carraro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a series of lectures for an Astrophysics of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) master’s degree in Astrophysics and Cosmology at Padova University. From the cold molecular phase in which stars and planetary systems form, to the very hot coronal gas that surrounds galaxies and galaxy clusters, the ISM is everywhere. Studying its properties is vital for the exploration of virtually any field in astronomy and cosmology. These notes give the student a coherent and accurate mathematical and physical approach, with continuous references to the real ISM in galaxies. The book is divided into three parts. Part One introduces the equations of fluid dynamics for a system at rest and acoustic waves, and then explores the real ISM through the role of thermal conduction and viscosity, concluding with a discussion of shock waves and turbulence. In Part Two, the electromagnetic field is switched on and its role in modulating shock waves and contrasting gravity is studied. Part Three describes dust and its properties, followed by the main stellar sources of energy. The last two chapters respectively address the various components of the ISM and molecular clouds and star formation.

Book Evolution of Interstellar Dust and Related Topics

Download or read book Evolution of Interstellar Dust and Related Topics written by A. Bonetti and published by North-Holland. This book was released on 1989 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an astronomical subject of such wide applications as interstellar dust it is to be expected that not only are there diverse opinions on its precise nature, but also diverse opinions on its influence in various astrophysical environments. At this Enrico Fermi school lecturers of the highest calibre presented their subjects and points of view to the students, so that the basic scientific controversies and methodology were accessible. In addition to questions of sources and growth, the destruction of grains was extensively discussed. A number of physical processes, such as charging and heating of grains, were also considered. Classically, and in the current context of dust problems, the optics of grains individually and in clouds has been the most critically and fully treated aspect.

Book The Role of Dust in Dense Regions of Interstellar Matter

Download or read book The Role of Dust in Dense Regions of Interstellar Matter written by Thomas Henning and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TH. HENNING and B. STECKLUM University Observatory. Jena This workshop was organized by the University Observatory Jena and devoted to the physics and chemistry of dense regions of interstellar matter. It was especially dealing with the properties of interstellar dust grains and star formation in those regions. This field of research was opened in Jena already in the 1950s and an early fA U Colloquium on the topic of interstellar matter was held here in 1969. Since that time, the subject of interstellar matter has grown into a much more important part of astrophysics than it was in 1969. Now we are beginning to understand the process of star formation in a greater detail. The discovery of many interstellar molecules by radioastronomers opened the new field of interstellar chemistry. In addition, the application of the new techniques of infrared astronomy led to the discovery of several absorption bands, e. g. , the 3. 1 11m ice band, which pointed to the existence of grain mantles. More recently, the detection of infrared emission lines was the first hint to the existence of a new component of interstellar matter. All these things were discussed extensively during the workshop. The very successful IRAS mission, which was also a subject of this workshop, gave us many new insights and unexpected findings, e. g. , the detection of infrared cirrus clouds.
