Book Super Lateral Thinking Puzzles

Download or read book Super Lateral Thinking Puzzles written by Paul Sloane and published by Sterling Publishing Company, Inc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stand out from the pack--don't think conventionally, think laterally! And, you can start developing well-honed mental skills with more than 80 braintwisting puzzles that test your creativity and smarts. At first it might not seem as if there's enough information to solve them, but if you just persist, you'll come up with the logical answers. Some of the conundrums come from real life: try to figure out how the Greek playwright Aeschylus could have been killed by a tortoise or how the truth about Mary Queen of Scots' baldness was finally revealed. Or, give this a shot: A runner was awarded a prize for winning a marathon. But, the judges disqualified him when they saw a picture of his wristwatch. Why? Happy puzzling! Answer: A picture of the runner early in the race showed him wearing his watch on his right wrist. When he crossed the finishing line it was on his left wrist. The judges investigated and found that one man had run the first half and his identical twin brother ran the second half of the race.

Book Idiots at Work

  • Author : Leland Gregory
  • Publisher : Andrews McMeel Publishing

Download or read book Idiots at Work written by Leland Gregory and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's the strangest question employers have been asked during an interview? Among the responses: * What is it you people do at this company? * Why aren't you in a more interesting business? * Will the company move my rock collection from California to Maryland? * Does you company have a policy regarding concealed weapons? --from Idiots at Work: Chronicles of Workplace Stupidity Leland Gregory once thought crooks, politicians, and lawyers were the greatest nitwits out there, but it turns out that the working masses are packed with the dumb, dumber, and dumbest humans on the face of the planet. Gregory's look at nincompoops, Idiots at Work: Chronicles of Workplace Stupidity, makes it crystal clear that the world's biggest jerks are on the job. Consider these examples: * The woman who sued Eastman Kodak to improve the lighting conditions on her job...in a darkroom? * The Ontario Federation of Labor, which installed a bad boss hotline to get a handle on labor problems--only to have the system crash soon after startup because too many calls came in. * The interviewee who wore a Walkman, explaining that she could listen to the interviewer and the music at the same time. Gregory has made a career out of finding the imbeciles of the world and sharing their antics with the rest of us. His AMP humor compilations What's the Number for 911?, What's the Number for 911 Again?, The Stupid Crook Book, and Hey, Idiot! were all hilarious, but Idiots at Work takes the cake. The book is filled with hilarious tales of moronic managers, office idiots, stupid shareholders, daft decision-makers, poor planners, and other outstanding examples of cubical klutzes.

Book excerpt: There are no old drug addicts. That's what everyone says, at least. So how did Chuck get to his forty-third birthday and find himself still neck-deep in this scene? He knows he's the creepy old guy with the drugs or the guy who's too old to be at the party doing everyone else's drugs, but if it ain't broke ... Well, he manages to make it to work at the dwarf whale distributor every day. He may hate that his dearly seedy San Francisco has become overrun with Starbucks, startups, and Lululemon moms, but he makes do every month for the rent-controlled apartment he shares with roommates he never sees. It's not perfect, but it's livable. In the end, though, every addict has that one special vice that can tip them from relatively functional to completely unhinged. For Chuck, it's a new drug that doesn't even have a name yet; it's just a smokable, everlasting gobstopper of mellow high. But when chunks of time begin to disappear and rearrange themselves , he wonders if this really is just another life-ruining drug or if it's something straight out of a Philip K. Dick universe. Word on the street is that this

  • Author : Terence E. McDonnell
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-08-18
  • ISBN : 022638215X

Download or read book Best Laid Plans written by Terence E. McDonnell and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McDonnell here offers some startling new ways to think about propaganda, specifically about health campaigns. He uses HIV/AIDS media campaigns in Ghana as his case, laying out efforts to control and organize how local communities make sense of the disease. Using media to change people s sexual practices involves evidence-based design, opinion leaders in the design process, and getting all organizations behind a single message. But these campaigns hardly ever work. Why? They are subject to cultural misfires: they are disrupted by misinterpretation and misuse. Enter cultural entropy this concept identifies a process through which intended meanings and uses of propaganda (and other cultural objects) fracture into alternative meanings, new practices, failed interactions, and blatant disregard. The book shows with exquisite ethnographic details how the AIDS media campaigns succumb to cultural entropy: e.g., how people turn female condoms into bracelets, AIDS posters go missing from public postings and become home decor, and red ribbons fade into pink ribbons under the sun. Cultural entropy is a disruption process that affects things as well as symbols. Cultural entropy offers a new explanation for the failure of AIDS campaigns specifically and modern interventions broadly."

As the new water-closet contender, Bob Fenster continues his romp into areas of idiot intrigue by chronicling the folly and reckless abandon of the human race. * Covering such topics as My Favorite Morons, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, The Surprising Things People Don't Know, and Dumb Plays in the Face of Fate, this compendium chronicles the densely inept and decidedly ignorant. * Featuring outrageous new stories plus the best material from the previous Duh! books, this compilation is the ultimate collection of human stupidity.

Book excerpt: The Group is a book that talks to people who are successful in an economy that they do not believe in. Aimed at those for whom it is fashionable to be knowing, it tells the story of Khaled, an arch-cynic for whom everyone is a fake or a loser. The only problem is Khaled has done very little himself that he can be proud of and is beginning to bore himself. Faced with the prospect of drifting through life in obscurity he dreams up a satirical scam to reveal how easily people can be manipulated, and how thin their dreams and aspirations are. But rather than escape The Group, his scam only serves to show how hollow he has become, and how he needs to completely recalibrate his own life. The Group is a dark and wickedly funny book, a modern media satire about people who tell lies and people who believe them.
