Book Tony Greig

Download or read book Tony Greig written by Joyce Greig and published by Macmillan Publishers Aus.. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tony Greig was a fearless cricketer, a born entertainer, a stalwart friend and a loving son and father. His death in December 2012 was met with an outpouring of grief from family, friends, colleagues and fans. In this wonderful memoir, Tony's life is recounted by two of those who knew him best - his mother, Joycie, and his eldest son, Mark. Tony's story began in his beloved South Africa when Joycie embarked on an extraordinary war-time love affair with a man not her husband, Sandy Greig. From schoolboy cricketing prodigy, to his early days playing for English country side Sussex, Tony travelled the world meeting an array of cricket greats. He was eventually made captain of England, but then was removed from the job when he controversially threw in his lot with Kerry Packer and his World Series Cricket in 1977. Together, Tony and Packer changed the game forever and formed a friendship that lasted 28 years until Packer's death in 2005. With Packer's offer of a 'job for life', Tony joined the Nine Network as a commentator and settled his family in Australia. From behind the mic, Tony became part of the fabric of the Australian summer. His knowledge of the game, his respect for players from all countries, but particularly for those from the Subcontinent, his humour and above all his passion for cricket made him one of the game's best loved and best known figures. This rich and fascinating life has been retold with warmth and love, giving us an unforgettable portrait of a great man.

Book The Bedsers

Book excerpt: Sporting twins Alec and Eric Bedser are a remarkable duo. From humble origins at Woking to their reign as key members of the Surrey team during the magnificent succession of seven championships in the 1950s, they share a rare and precious relationship. The Bedsers is Alan Hill's engrossing study which explores the puzzles of their identical twinship. Alec Bedser was England's bowling standard bearer in the years following the Second World War. His exceptional strength and prowess yielding almost 1,924 wickets, including 236 in 51 Tests. He was at the peak of his powers in the 1953 series against Australia, when his aggregate of 39 wickets beat the previous record held by Maurice Tate. It included match figures of 14 wickets for 99 runs at Nottingham - a feat only surpassed against Australia by Wilfred Rhodes, Hedley Verity and Jim Laker. High among his other distinctions was his record against Don Bradman whom he dismissed on eight occasions. After retirement, Alex maintained his connection with cricket in fulfilling administrative duties, which included a record term as Chairman of the Test selectors. Knighted in 1997 for his services to cricket, he is the only English bowler to receive the honour.

Book No Holding Back

Download or read book No Holding Back written by Michael Holding and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The autobiography of West Indies fast-bowling legend turned Sky pundit, Michael Holding, author of the award-winning Why We Kneel, How We Rise As one of the fastest bowlers the world has seen, Michael Holding went by the haunting nickname 'Whispering Death', claiming 249 Test wickets. Despite having not laced his bowling boots since 1989, it remains a fitting sobriquet. As a commentator and administrator, Holding has delivered his views on cricket in the same manner that he played the game: he speaks softly with a rich Jamaican rhythm and is calculated in either criticism or compliment. NO HOLDING BACK charts his effortless transition from one of the great players to one of the great pundits. Holding graphically describes his days as a player, looking back at how he tried to deliberately hurt batsmen on the wastelands of Kingston, and his first match for Jamaica when he almost collapsed from exhaustion - after only four overs! There is time, too, to divulge what it was like to tour with the West Indies, and unmissable insights about sharing a dressing room with other legends of the game like Clive Lloyd, Sir Viv Richards and Malcolm Marshall. Holding does not shirk the big issues, as he discusses how the West Indies have slipped following their halcyon days, openly assesses Brian Lara and laments the hypocrisy over the state of the game in the region. The controversy surrounding the Allen Stanford $20m spectacle, the ICC's handling of the abandoned England v Pakistan match, player power, illegal bowling actions and the threat of Twenty20 to the Test game are all subjects which Holding tackles with characteristic knowledge and class.

When an injury rules him out of an entire season, not only might it spell the end of his long career, he is faced more immediately with a summer aimlessly wandering garden centres and listening to The Archers. He decides instead to set off on an odyssey across the counties of England in search of that golden time in his youth when his passion for the game was first kindled. It's a journey that begins in May in light drizzle at the birthplace of cricket, takes in the burial site of his favourite ground (now a Marks & Spencer) and even stops along the way to flirt with the love child of WG Grace and Kerry Katona that is Twenty20. It ends with the ultimate cricketing zenith - returning to the field of play to bowl an over to Freddie Flintoff in fading light in front of a capacity crowd. So can cricket still bring comfort and meaning to his life or is Old Father Time about to call for Michael's bails?

Book A Social History of English Cricket

Download or read book A Social History of English Cricket written by Derek Birley and published by Aurum. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed as a magisterial, classic work, A Social History of English Cricket is an encyclopaedic survey of the game, from its humble origins all the way to modern floodlit finishes. But it is also the story of English culture, mirrored in a sport that has always been a complex repository of our manners, hierarchies and politics. Derek Birley’s survey of the impact on cricket of two world wars, Empire and ‘the English caste system’, will, contends Ian Wooldridge, ‘teach an intelligent child of twelve more about their heritage than he or she will ever pick up at school.’ In just under 400 pages Birley takes us through a rich historical tapestry: how the game was snatched from rustic obscurity by gentlemanly gamblers; became the height of late eighteenth century metropolitan fashion; was turned into both symbol and synonym for British imperialism; and its more recent struggle to dislodge the discomforting social values preserved in the game from its imperial heyday. Superbly witty and humorous, peopled by larger-than-life characters from Denis Compton to Ian Botham, and wholly forswearing nostalgia, A Social History of English Cricket is a tour-de-force by one of the great writers on cricket.

Book The Highlights

Download or read book The Highlights written by Frank Keating and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Keating's work adorned the Guardian for four decades from 1973 until shortly before his death in early 2013. In his heyday Keating's fizzing wordplay and sheer joie de vivre thrilled readers. They saw him not just as a journalist but as a fan who shared their own delight in sport for its own sake and in the stars who made it watchable. He also had a special rapport with many of the greats such as Barry John and Ian Botham. From the 1970s to the 1990s he attended nearly all the great sporting events. Later he became a nostalgist with a matchless gift for bringing the past to life. But his happy, rosy, sunlit view of sport was always subject to magnificent outbreaks of literary bad temper, especially when confronted by committee-room idiots and officious gatemen. The Highlights includes much of his best writing in the Guardian on a huge range of sport plus extracts from his work elsewhere, including The Observer, The Oldie and The Spectator - and from his books, including the autobiography Half-Time Whistle and his classic account of the 1980-81 England tour of the Caribbean, Another Bloody Day in Paradise. Edited by his friend and colleague Matthew Engel, The Highlights is a lasting record of the work of a very special writer.
