Book Tibeto Burman Tonology

Download or read book Tibeto Burman Tonology written by Alfons Weidert and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph lays the foundation for a prosodological theory of Tibeto-Burman languages within a comparative and reconstructional framework. It is primarily based on data collections of mostly unknown languages on which the author worked for more than 10 years on several projects. This comparative study of tonology represents a significant contribution not only to the historical-comparative study of Tibeto-Burman, but also to the larger field of linguistic theory, especially now that the subject increasingly begins to be approached along diachronic lines. With this in mind, it is hoped that this work will provoke future research in the field.

Book The Dialect Laboratory

Download or read book The Dialect Laboratory written by Gunther De Vogelaer and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much theorizing in language change research is made without taking into account dialect data. Yet, dialects seem to be superior data to build a theory of linguistic change on, since dialects are relatively free of standardization and therefore more tolerant of variant competition in grammar. In addition, as compared to most cross-linguistic and diachronic data, dialect data are unusually high in resolution. This book shows that the study of dialect variation has indeed the potential, perhaps even the duty, to play a central role in the process of finding answers to fundamental questions of theoretical historical linguistics. It includes contributions which relate a clearly formulated theoretical question of historical linguistic interest with a well-defined, solid empirical base. The volume discusses phenomena from different domains of grammar (phonology, morphology and syntax) and a wide variety of languages and language varieties in the light of several current theoretical frameworks.

Book Tonal Change and Neutralization

Download or read book Tonal Change and Neutralization written by Haruo Kubozono and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No book has ever been published on tonal change and neutralization, two closely related topics in tonal phonology. This will be the first book to be devoted to both. The articles collected in this volume analyze a wide range of data concerning tonal change and neutralization, including post-lexical neutralization which represents a new topic in prosodic research. The volume as a whole covers a wide range of tone and pitch-accent languages in Asia, Africa and Europe, with a main focus on Asian languages/dialects many of which are endangered now. In addition to presenting novel data and analyses about individual languages, it provides typological perspectives on tonal change and neutralization. This volume will serve as an indispensable source of data and analyses for a wide range of linguists interested in phonetics, phonology, prosody, historical linguistics, language typology, endangered languages, Japanese linguistics, and Chinese linguistics.

Book Tone Sandhi

Download or read book Tone Sandhi written by Matthew Y. Chen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-03 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew Chen's study, first published in 2000, offers a most comprehensive analysis of the rich and complex patterns of tone used in Chinese languages. Chinese has a wide repertoire of tones which undergo often surprising changes when they are connected in speech flow. The term tone sandhi refers to this tonal alternation. Chen examines tone sandhi phenomena in detail across a variety of Chinese dialects. He explores a range of important theoretical issues such as the nature of tonal representation, the relation of tone to accent, the prosodic domain of sandhi rules, and the interface between syntax and phonology. His book is the culmination of a ten-year research project and offers a wealth of empirical data not previously accessible to linguists. Extensive references and a bibliography on tone sandhi complete this invaluable resource which will be welcomed as a standard reference on Chinese tone.
