Book excerpt: Every town has one and every one has a story. This is just one of them, with a "Twilight Zone" style twist thrown-in for good measure. "Up ahead at the sign post..." They say you can never go back and maybe you shouldn't. Thirty two years after he left his hometown, Jonathan Moran returns to visit his dying father and spends a long afternoon driving down "memory lane" only to find a portal to the past and maybe a date with destiny. This is a story of a town the way it was and never will be again. And a tavern like thousands of others across America that shaped many a memory and many a life.

Book excerpt: From an early Dutch and Palatine-settled farming community to a sprawling suburb adjacent to a metropolitan city, Guilderland, New York explores the town's early crossroads, hamlets, and villages from 1880 to 1960. Through more than 200 images from the Guilderland Historical Society, this photographic tribute to the community's rich and diverse legacy reflects the many changes the town has experienced through the years. Discover French's Hollow, one of the nation's first industrial parks, which began in Guilderland in the 1790s. View the natural hills and vales of Tawasentha, legendary for its Native American heritage, and the Great Western Turnpike, one of the first pioneer roads leading to the west. Many families who have had a profound influence on the community are also featured in this collection. The industry of Guilderland's early families and the town's key location have resulted in the main transportation routes, turnpikes, railroads, the New York State Thruway, corporate businesses, and the State University campus that exist today.

Book A Baby Boomers History of Guilderland NY

Download or read book A Baby Boomers History of Guilderland NY written by John Green and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-08-27 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of Guilderland, NY has a long, rich history dating even before its incorporation in 1803. This well documented. For the baby boomer generation however, the town holds a different history, not covered in any textbook. We did not consider it history at the time because we were living in it. Places we lived, loved, learned, worked and played, taken for granted, as though nothing would ever change. Those days from the 1950's to 1980's, were times of great change, not only in the culture of America, but also as reflected in the town. If photos are scarce, memories, stories and anecdotes remain. The photos and stories in this book, have been gathered from many sources. Photos may fade but memories remain intact - for the most part. Please enjoy the walk...

Book Creatures of Darkness

Download or read book Creatures of Darkness written by Gene D. Phillips and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other writer, Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) is responsible for raising detective stories from the level of pulp fiction to literature. Chandler's hard-boiled private eye Philip Marlowe set the standard for rough, brooding heroes who managed to maintain a strong sense of moral conviction despite a cruel and indifferent world. Chandler's seven novels, including The Big Sleep (1939) and The Long Goodbye (1953), with their pessimism and grim realism, had a direct influence on the emergence of film noir. Chandler worked to give his crime novels the flavor of his adopted city, Los Angeles, which was still something of a frontier town, rife with corruption and lawlessness. In addition to novels, Chandler wrote short stories and penned the screenplays for several films, including Double Indemnity (1944) and Strangers on a Train (1951). His work with Billy Wilder and Alfred Hitchcock on these projects was fraught with the difficulties of collaboration between established directors and an author who disliked having to edit his writing on demand. Creatures of Darkness is the first major biocritical study of Chandler in twenty years. Gene Phillips explores Chandler's unpublished script for Lady in the Lake, examines the process of adaptation of the novel Strangers on a Train, discusses the merits of the unproduced screenplay for Playback, and compares Howard Hawks's director's cut of The Big Sleep with the version shown in theaters. Through interviews he conducted with Wilder, Hitchcock, Hawks, and Edward Dmytryk over the past several decades, Phillips provides deeper insight into Chandler's sometimes difficult personality. Chandler's wisecracking Marlowe has spawned a thousand imitations. Creatures of Darkness lucidly explains the author's dramatic impact on both the literary and cinematic worlds, demonstrating the immeasurable debt that both detective fiction and the neo-noir films of today owe to Chandler's stark vision.

Book The Directory of the Armed Forces Radio Service Series

Download or read book The Directory of the Armed Forces Radio Service Series written by and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1999-10-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This directory details the output of transcriptions from the Armed Forces Radio Service from the beginning in 1942 up to 1967. Since many official papers of the early days are no longer available, the information was gathered from many private sources. The range of programs the AFRS covered was immense. Particularly during the war years the accent was on entertainment. Popular and classical music and comedy and drama shows were rebroadcast over AFRS stations all over the world. The AFRS also produced many programs designed to inform and educate. This directory attempts to present the complete range of series the AFRS transmitted. Collectors and followers of popular, country or series music and of drama or comedy shows will appreciate the short description of the AFRS shows, complete with cast names and issues and recording dates, that comprise the entries. The entries are organized by series and include the Libraries series, H-Series, Network Series, R-Series, and Assigned Matrix Numbers. An appendix of non-AFRS transcriptions is included along with a bibliography for further research.
