Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Populist leader Thomas E. Watson was a figure alternately eminent and notorious. Born before the Civil War, he lived through the turn of the century and past the close of the First World War, pursuing his career in an era as changing and paradoxical as himself. In the nineteenth century, Watson championed the rising Populist movement, an interracial alliance of agricultural interests, against the irresistible forces of industrial capitalism. The movement was broken under the wheels of the industrial political machine, but survived into the twentieth century in various “fantastic shapes...to be understood mainly by the psychology of frustration.” Political frustration transformed Watson as well, from liberal to racial bigot and from popular spokesman to mob leader. In this biography, through careful study of public and private writings, and through objective and tolerant exposition, Mr. Woodward has attempted to solve the enigma of this man who did much to alter his times and who was, in turn, altered by them. “Mr. Woodward’s biography of Watson is a model of its kind. It has all the obvious qualities of scholarship, thoroughness and impartiality. It has, in addition, a sympathetic understanding of broad social movements, a mature appreciation of character, an original interpretation of economic facts and factors, an incisive criticism of political techniques, and a literary style that is always vigorous and sometimes brilliant.”—H. S. Commager, New York Herald Tribune Books “Mr. Woodward’s biography of Watson constitutes the best one-volume history that has appeared of that first crop of social ideals, politically garnered in Populism...Mr. Woodward’s biography is also valuable in that it is something more than the story of Populism. It is a striking portrait of a man.”—W. A. White, Saturday Review of Literature Includes the Author’s Preface to the 1955 Reissue.

Book excerpt: “Taylor… probes [Jefferson’s] ambitious mission in clear prose and with great insight and erudition.” —Annette Gordon-Reed, Atlantic By turns entertaining and tragic, this elegant history reveals the origins of a great university in the dilemmas of Virginia slavery. Thomas Jefferson shares center stage with his family and fellow planters, but at the crux are the enslaved black families on whom they depend. Taylor’s account of Jefferson’s campaign to save Virginia by building the university is dramatic, a contest for power and resources rich in political maneuver and eccentricities comic and cruel.

Book excerpt: This book makes a critical contribution to the study of pan-Africanism and the education of African people for continental African citizenship. It is a unique endeavor in that it intersects the social history of pan-Africanism and the education of African people at a 'global' level and provides reflections from a multidisciplinary perspective on the urgency for continental pan-Africanism educational system in order to produce a more renascent African for the twenty-first century. Arguing that Pan-African Education is a mass-based educational system that will ‘craft’ a pan-African African personality, John Marah calls for integrated African school systems and curriculum changes conducive to larger social integration and institutionalized pan-African educational processes. The establishments of pan-African Teachers Colleges; intensive language institutes; pan-African literature courses; the training of African military and police forces; the use of music, sports, media and other extra-curricular activities (the hidden curriculum), etc.; are viewed as essential aspects in the socialization of a pan-African character or personality. Pan-African Education is an essential read for students and scholars of Pan-Africanism, African and Africana Studies, and Black Studies.
Download or read book I d Fight the World written by Peter La Chapelle and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-09-09 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before the United States had presidents from the world of movies and reality TV, we had scores of politicians with connections to country music. In I’d Fight the World, Peter La Chapelle traces the deep bonds between country music and politics, from the nineteenth-century rise of fiddler-politicians to more recent figures like Pappy O’Daniel, Roy Acuff, and Rob Quist. These performers and politicians both rode and resisted cultural waves: some advocated for the poor and dispossessed, and others voiced religious and racial anger, but they all walked the line between exploiting their celebrity and righteously taking on the world. La Chapelle vividly shows how country music campaigners have profoundly influenced the American political landscape.
